Chapter 41

“The product is clean, no harmful chemicals are added to it,” his man shouted from where he had taken cover behind the overturned table. Fuck, Zane thought. This whole thing had been a setup to lure them out to a specific place. It pissed him off, and he would make sure they didn’t succeed in what they wanted to accomplish by doing

I want all those fuckers dead but one. I don’t care which one you keep alive. Someone needs to be able to talk,” he shouted to his men. He knew they were in trouble. By the looks of it, they were outnumbered, and the enemies had the better strategical point. But he knew his men, and he knew things like this motivated them. He didn’t doubt they would come out on top of this. If he did, it would be a self–fulfilling prophecy. If his men felt his doubt, it would create á domino effect. Fuck that. They

“Oh,” was all she could say. Zane turned around and walked away. Ava wondered for a moment if he was upset with her. But then she saw him retrieve her bathrobe and holding it up for her. She hurried to let him help her on with it.

“You look absolutely amazing. If I didn’t need to sign these papers, I would have ordered everyone out of here and fucked you until neither of us could walk. Go and use my shower. You don’t need to wait for Gabriel to get ready. When we are done, we will all eat dinner to celebrate,” Zane whispered to her. Ava felt herself blush again. This man could really make her lose her balance, and she wished he didn’t need to sign the contract with Gabriel. She would have liked the alternative.

Zane had enjoyed the evening, the dinner with all of them had been fun. Tom, Jax and he had all placed bets on how long it would take Gabriel and Ryder to get anywhere. Ava had seemed to have fun and Zane couldn’t think of the last time he had such a relaxing evening. That was about to end, but at least it had lasted a couple of hours. He and Jax had been in his office for an hour. They had got a call saying something was off with one of their shipments.

“I’ll just tell Ava I will be out tonight. I’ll be down in five minutes,” Zane told Jax as they left the office. Jax nodded as he headed down the stairs. Zane knocked on Ava’s door. There was no reply, and he frowned. He was just about to take out his phone and call her when he heard footsteps on the staircase. Zane turned around and saw Ava coming up the stairs, she had two books in her hand, and he relaxed.

“Zane, did you need anything?” she asked as she saw him standing outside her room.

“No, angel. I just wanted to let you know Jax and I will go out for a while. I don’t know when I’ll be back. It shouldn’t take more than a couple of hours. But you never know.”

“Oh, okay. Is Ryder back yet?” she asked. Ryder had got the task of driving Gabriel home.

“No, not yet, we’ll take Tom and two other men,” he told her. He saw her gnawing on her bottom lip.

“Shouldn’t you wait until Ryder gets back? I don’t think it should be long,” she said. Again, her caring surprised Zane. It shouldn’t have because it was in her nature. But he wasn’t used to it.

“It will be fine. I prefer him to be here, anyway. Are you off to bed?” he asked, and she nodded.

“Sleep in my room. I would like to come home to a gift to unwrap,” he told her and saw her blushing, but she nodded. It was just half of the truth. Zane did like the idea of knowing his angel would sleep in his bed, partly because it would make it easy to satisfy his yearning for her. But partly because he liked having her in his bed, in his room. It was staking his claim on her. He drew her in for a kiss before letting her go and walking downstairs to the waiting car.

They got to the warehouse and the man responsible for receiving and dividing the shipment stood waiting for them with two of his men.

“Boss,” he said as a greeting. Zane nodded. He knew the man was trustworthy. He had been working for the organisation for years with no complaints or suspicious activity. Every shipment he accepted and divided had zero loss of product in the transfer. He had an eye for details. That is why he had called them.

“Show us,” Zane said, skipping the pleasantries. He didn’t give a fuck if his men got offended by him not being nice. If they were, they needed to get their panties out of their assess and grow a thicker skin. His man showed them inside

and walked up to one of the pallets with product which stood in the middle of the warehouse. Zane could see all the pallets had their wrapping open.

“This is the issue, boss,” his man said, pulling out a bag from a pallet. Zane looked at it and didn’t see the issue. It looked sealed and untouched. He cocked an eyebrow. “Usually, the bags we get the product in are clear,” the man hurriedly said. “These have a slight orange tint to the plastic.” He turned the bag in different angles to let the harsh fluorescent light hit it in differently. Zane nodded.

see it,” he said.

“We have received shipments from this supplier for almost ten years. The bags have always been transparent without tint,” the man said. Zane nodded again. This is why he was one of their best. Few would have noticed it or reacted to the slight change.

“Is there anything else?” Jax asked.

“Yes, boss. I felt it was strange, so I opened one of the packages. I rarely do, you know that. But this is what we found,” he told them and took them over to a table. The package lay on the table. A cut had been made in the plastic, exposing the product inside. Zane looked at it. The product had an unmistaken blue hue to it.

“It’s blue,” he said, pointing out the obvious.

“Yes, boss. I think that is why they changed the packaging. Orange cancels out blue. They hoped it looked white and that we would distribute it as usual. I doubt most of our suppliers would react to the colour change. They are more focused on selling. That sounded probable, Zane thought.

“I want this tested. I want to know why it’s blue and I want to know how it differs from our usual product,” Zane told the man.

“Yes, boss. What do we do in the meantime?” he asked. Zane swore in his head. This would cause an issue. If they didn’t distribute the product, there would be a shortage and the customers would go elsewhere. If they distributed it without knowing what was in it, they risked killing their customers, earning a bad reputation, causing their customer to go elsewhere. Damned if they do, damned if they don’t. Fuck, he thought.

“How long to get an answer from the testing?” he asked.

“The simple test takes about ten minutes. If it’s positive, we are looking at a couple of days before we get the complete -answer to what is in it,” his man answered. Fuck, Zane thought again.

“Do the initial test. We will wait,” Zane said. The manthat thought they could come into their city and off them.

“Boss, on your right,” Tom shouted, and raised his gun. A man had popped up close to Zane wielding a knife. Who the fuck brings a knife to a gunfight? Zane thought before Tom put a bullet in the man. The man staggered and did his best to stab Zane with his last strength. Zane threw out his arm at the man and the man fell to his side. He was no threat at that point. His knife had hit Zane’s arm, causing his suit to slice.ppen from the elbow down, and he could feel a pain in his lower arm. He knew the cut had been superficial, Zane ignored it. He turned around to thank Tom and saw another of the unfamiliar men aiming for him. To be able to shoot the man going at Zane, Tom had been forced to shift, leaving him partly exposed. Zane took aim with his gun as he shouted a warning to Tom. It was too late. Zane could see the bullet impacting Tom. He saw his own bullet hitting the shooter in the head and he saw Tom fall down. Fuck, he thought as he started shouting out orders again. They were one man down, the enemy, two down. They needed better numbers than that if they were to survive this. 1
