Chapter 46
"I'll do this quickly so you can start mending,"The doctor adds, observing my widening eyes.
Squirming on the uncomfortable bed, I fold my hands and nod my head to show I agree.
In the moments when the anguish gets too severe, I must hiss in agony and tell myself that the torment will soon be gone.
The doctor sets the bloodied cloth on the metal cart, relieving my wounds. Want David here while I stitch the cuts? Her inquiry surprises me, and I gaze at her in uncertainty.
I go back to when I saw David. Hunter and Neme rose and followed David someplace in the clinic, or maybe outdoors. A shudder runs through my spine as I recall Neme's terror.
Neme reveres her Alpha, David. Since we were spared from the car catastrophe, she has shown undying loyalty to David. She would not aid me when I was put over David's shoulder, shouting and pounding, and August back to the pack home. I'm unsure how she respected him so fast.
I calm my thoughts. "No, thanks,"
Maybe if I handled my themes differently, Hunter wouldn't be so upset. Maybe I should've told David first, all alone. I shouldn't have called the meeting at all.
"I'll reattach you with a running suture. It's a suture that won't leave scars and is quick to apply." The doctor explains as she gently raises my chin.
The initial needle pushing into my fragile skin causes a gasp and my eyes to close. Josephine freezes, I scream.
"Tell me anything you'd want me to discuss, Luna."
I glance into her bright eyes, trying to think of anything to say.
"Almost 10 years ago, I chose college over the pack. My father was enraged because he felt I should remain and be a member of the pack, but Mom was delighted and did all she could to prepare me for college."
"I wanted to be a nurse until I met this guy. He was a doctor who was disrespectful to every N at the hospital where I was collecting clinical hours. I was checking on an older man who had fallen and broken his leg when he entered. He shouted
at me, telling me I should be embarrassed to be called a nurse, even though I followed every detail I learned from my books. That we hospital nurses need additional hours to complete our jobs correctly.
"He had no idea I wasn't a nurse." But I snarled at him, cursed in front of the poor older man, and left him to change the IV's contents.
"I was so enraged with him that I ignored him the following day when he attempted to contact me. I ignored him till he changed. He'd recognize them and seek their thoughts on a patient. Uncomplicated circumstances occurred, I slept with him at his flat, and we began dating. So I realized I was going to school for the wrong reasons."
"A doctor's career takes years. After medical school, residency. His daily reminders that the hard work pays off- that every day you heal a patient, the heavy work was physically and psychologically exhausting."
"When I went to see my parents years ago, the pack was attacked by the Rogues. The assault killed kids, adults, David's father, and the pack's doctor. And as the only doctor available, I remained for weeks to repair severed limbs, deliver lifeless infants to ease the mothers' grief, and place the dead in black bags."
My eyes welled up with tears after hearing the specifics of the Rogue assault. I ignore her whimper as she walks away. The sparkling eyes of Josephine scream in anguish as she looks back at me.

"I never returned to him; I haven't seen him in two years, and my parents were unaware of his existence, which bothers me daily since he was-is-my mate. I let him go for my pack's sake." "Do you miss him?" I ask her.
"No, I'm not leaving, Susan. I fit in. I wish I'd said farewell to my mate."
After that, she leaves me alone in my allocated room. I lay on the clinic bed, thinking about her words.
I never imagined her having to let someone she loved go for the pack. It teaches me not to judge a book by its cover.
The fireplace beside my bed isn't lighted, so I look at the artwork on the dark walls to pass the time.
What is going on with Neme and Hunter? That terrifies me. My mind imagines punishment or expulsion from the pack's property. I don't think David would force Neme to go, but I'm unsure. My body cramps from worrying thoughts,. My body tenses even more as I hear faint, heavy footfall approaching
As I open my eyes, I see David enter and shut my room's door. His body is turned away from me, his hands grasping the door frame, yet it's long enough for me to see he's anxious.

Even though the day isn't finished, I sound fatigued. David keeps staring at the door, while I squirm on my bed.
Just tell me, please.
"It took all in me not to rip my own closest friend apart, Susan," he sighs and shakes his head. Sobbing blue eyes of David finally stare at me. "My closest buddy," David sighs.
My throat tightens. I can almost feel David's grief, hatred, and guilt. David comes to my side, kneels, and holds my hand with a terrible firmness.
David hushes me and brushes a filthy strand of my hair away from my face.
Neme is still with the pack, but Hunter-" David lets go of my hand to rake his own hands through his black hair. "Fuck, I told him to rest."
"A rest? Where?"
David re-grabs my hand to reply. "At the little log hut on the territorial boundary. Hunter will be punished by being ostracized."
We go quiet, and I gaze around the room, except at David. Every few minutes, David holds my hand and strokes my wrist gently. A nurse, seeing her Alpha and Luna in the room, places wood logs within the fireplace's furnace, lights a match on the matchbox, and throws the flaming newspaper at the logs.
