Chapter Nightmare
That night I dream I’m alone in the forest in a long white gown. My stomach is heavy with child while I search aimlessly for Roman. As I run through the woods I trip over a branch and tumble to the ground. My stomach hits the ground first and hard. As I roll over, hold my stomach, I get a sharp pain. Looking down at my hands I see my blood covering them and more blood soking my white gown. Laughter echoes through the trees as I scream for my mate. “Lexi.” I shrill, familiar voice taunts getting closer and closer. Soon a man’s shadow forms in the distance. Just before I can see who it is he stops. “I told you to wait. But you couldn’t listen could you?” He asks. Suddenly he surges forward but still I’m blind as to who it is, and sticks a knife into my stomach, twisting it in a circle. I scream Romans name as blood pours from my mouth but that only causes me to choke-
“Lexi!” Romans voice frantically says. “Lexi, baby, wake up!” I let my eyes flutter open and I gasp like I’ve been holding my breath. Bolting up I clutch my stomach feeling for my pup.
“Is he okay? Did anything happen?” I ask frantically.
“Lexi, calm down baby. It was just a dream. Our pup is fine.” Roman soothes. Tears pour down my cheeks.
“I-I saw him kill him.” I sob.
“Who?” Roman asks.
“Some man.” I tell him. “I recognized his voice but I never saw his face.” Roman pulls me onto his lap and I snuggle close. “It felt so real.” I whisper.
“You’ve had a couple of stressful days. I’m not surprised you had a nightmare.” Roman says rocking me. I glance at the clock on my nightstand and see that it’s seven in the morning. Usually I would still be sound asleep and would remain like that until ten, but I’m wide awake.
“I’m going to take a shower. Maybe that’ll calm me a little more.” I pull away from Roman and walk to the bathroom, not bothering to get clothes. After I strip my clothes off I look in the mirror at my stomach to see if there are any scars of injuries. What I see instead is much better. My once tiny stomach has a little but noticeable bump growing between my hips. This brings a smile to my face.
When the water is warm I step under and let it soak my skin. After my long shower I get out and try to pull on my jeans but they don’t fit over my stomach. So instead I pull on some pajama pants and a tank top. Roman laughs when he sees me. “Takes a shower but gets back into pajamas.” He rolls with laughter.
“I tried to put on jeans but they wouldn’t fit. My stomach is getting too big.” I pout. Roman places his hands on either side of my stomach.
“It’s worth it.” He whispers.
“Good morning.” A new, quiet, voice says. We both turn and see Abigail standing in the hallway.
“What are you doing here?” I ask.
“Dad was still asleep when I got up so I decided to come over here.” She tells me. “One of the pack members said I could just walk in. Is that okay?”
“Of course Abigail.”
“Please just call my Abby. Dad refuses to. He thinks nicknames are stupid.” Abby rolls her eyes.
“Abby it is then.” I laugh. She laughs a little too.
“So you’re pregnant?” She asks hesitantly.
“Yep. About four days now I think.” I tell her.
“That’s so cool!”
“Do you want breakfast?” Roman asks.
“Is that okay?” She asks.
“You need to stop asking that, Abby. You are welcome here any time.” I say grabbing her arm and pulling her to the table. Roman continues to make breakfast while Abby and I talk.
“So, tell me about our father.” I suggest.
“He’s an ex-Alpha who had a one night stand with my mother then took me in when she decided she didn’t want me. At that time she didn’t know I was a girl or I’m sure she would have changed her mind. Girls run in our family you know.” Abby adds. “That’s why I’m so surprised you’re not having a little girl.”
“I’m happy with my boy.” I tell her rubbing a hand over my stomach. “Plus girls are rare and white wolves are even rarer. I’m sure I would just throw off the earth balance if I had a girl.”
“You’re a white wolf?” Abby asks.
“Yeah. It almost got me kidnapped the first night I shifted.” Roman lets out a soft growl at the mention.
“And I take it big guy over there is still a little tender on the subject?” Abby laughs pointing towards Roman who sends her a glare.
“Oh my gosh! You need to meet my mother!” I shout suddenly. “She’ll love you!” Abby tenses.
“I’m not her daughter though. I’m the child her mate had when he cheated on her.”
“He didn’t really cheat. He left her because of me before you ever happened.” Suddenly a jolt of resentment towards my sister hits me but I brush it aside. “So, do you have a mate yet?” I ask, as Roman sets two plates in front of us.
“No.” Abby says immediately. “If I did I wouldn’t be here with Dad.”
“Do you hate him or something?”
“Not hate, just annoyed with.” She comments. “He dragged me here saying how I would love having a sister, which I did by the way, and said that he was going to make amends with his past to fix the future.” She rolls her eyes. “He says some weird things sometimes.”
“That is weird.” I agree.
“Anyways, I was wondering if you maybe wanted to go out today? Just as girls. It would be nice to have some sister bonding time.” Abby laughs.
“Of course!” I exclaim. “But Roman’s sister Annie has to come too. She’s like a sister to me as well and Roman will feel much more comfortable with the idea if she goes.”
“I completely understand.” She smiles. “Oh I’m so excited! Let me get ready really quick then I’ll be back and we can go!” She squeals on her way out. Roman comes up behind me and hugs me.
“I think you just made her day.” He whispers.
“She made mine.”
