Chapter 14
(1sla)
The Alpha comes roaring in the kitchen and slams the double doors open so hard they hit the walls behind them with a loud crash causing all of us in the kitchen to jump and I hear a few loud gasps.
Honestly, this is the first time I can remember the Alpha ever coming down to the kitchen.
“It has come to my attention that some of you low-lives are so bored with your existence that you have nothing else to think about besides your superiors.” He surveys the room looking all of us in the eyes before going on. “Normally, this would be expected. As omegas, your lives revolve around your ranked members” He starts pacing back and forth, everyor flinching with each step.
“Recently, I've heard some rumors and gossip about your ranked members, namely your Alpha and Luna. I won't dignify these rumors with a response, as they are obviously false.” He pauses anger rolling off of him in waves.
“l will not tolerate any insubordination from you, spreading rumors and gossip around the packhouse. It is a privilege to work so closely with your ranked members, one that you will not soon forget.” Everyone is looking down at their hands nodding. The two girls that were gossiping next to me make eye contact with each other and look scared.
“Do you have too much free time on your hands that you need to fill it with blasphemy?” He pauses and no one says anything.
Blasphemy, that was a big word for the Alpha, I was almost impressed I thought trying to suppress a smile. Apparently, no well enough as I catch Meghan glaring at me, thankfully the Alpha is so far into his prepared speech that he doesn't notic “Your Alpha asked you a question.” Meghan cuts in, still not breaking eye contact with me.
“No Alpha” We all grumble.
“Do you need more work to fill your excessive amount of free time?” He asks
“No Alpha." This time we respond immediately, and louder.
“Well, I'l leave that up to Meghan to decide.” The Alpha turned to look at her and some of the omegas rolled their eyes. V have been working from sun up to after sundown for days now.
“Did I see some of you roll your eyes at your Alpha?” Meghan sneers.
The Alpha is fuming now, I've never seen him, or anyone for that matter, get so angry. He is actually red in the face and looks like he might explode at any second.
“You are forbidden to speak on this matter ever again” He booms in a voice bigger than himself.
it was scary, and all the omegas start cowering and lowering their heads, almost bowing, baring their necks up at him.
I look around and realized too late that I should have been bowing too. The Alpha looked at me furiously, seeing me clea over the omega's lowered heads.
Meghan who had her head bowed looked up and met my eyes with confusion and rage. I bowed my head not daring to lo back up at them.
The Alpha storms out with Meghan following directly behind him. The silence that follows them is palpable. No one dares move but instead, everyone shifts to look at me.
I look up to about thirty pairs of eyes looking at me with a mix of confusion, shock, and awe on their faces.
“What did I do?” I whisper to no one in particular.
Abigail comes up and ushers me outside the back door of the kitchen, looking confused, as well. Once she closed the doc behind her and makes sure we're alone she looks at me puzzled.
“What did I do? I didn't know we were supposed to bow like that when he yelled” 1 explained in a hurry, worrying that she was upset with me.
“It's not something that we are supposed to do, it's something that we have to do.” I was confused. “No one can deny a direct order from an Alpha when he commands it," Abigail explained
“Is that what he was doing with that scary booming voice?” I ask.
“Yes!” Abigail laughs a bit, “So any pack member can't go against an order, especially an omega, that's why we all immediately bowed down like that in submission. It's a mix of fear and respect, well, mostly fear with this Alpha.”
“Was the last Alpha different? Alpha Benjamin's dad?” I could tell my questions caught her off guard.
Abigail scrunches her face, “I was too young I guess to really remember him” She pauses, “Now that I think about it I can’ really remember him at all”
“Safe to say he was a better Alpha if he didn't go out of his way to strike fear into his pack members; I mutter.
“You must be right”
“Then why didn't I feel the need to submit to him?” I ask confused.
She pauses deep in thought for a few minutes, “Do you remember how when there's a new pack member that comes into the pack? There is a small ceremony held by the Alpha where the new member pledges his loyalty and breaks ties to thei old pack?”
I shake my head, confused, I've never been to a ceremony before, even a small one. I generally tended to avoid working a any kind of gatherings if possible.
“Remember, ah it was ages ago at this point, you must have been ten. The head warrior found his mate from a nearby pac and she came to join him here. Normally, these things would be done without an audience, but since he was a higher-up member there was a short welcome party after. It was held behind the packhouse and a small stage was set up. We were charge of bringing out the food for it?”
I did vaguely remember that, I nodded slowly.
“Well, I guess it doesn't matter if you remember it. The point is that there has to be an official ceremony type thing in ord to let someone into the pack. I don't remember there ever being one for you. No offense, but no one really bothered and there was so much activity with the rogue attack it must have just been forgotten.”
“Or no one cared enough to want me to be an official part of the pack,” I mumble, Abigail smiled down at me but didn't deny it.
“so since I'm not technically part of the pack I didn't feel the need to submit?” I ask
“That's one theory. However, I haven't seen any omega from any pack be able to deny the order from an Alpha, even if the Alpha isn't theirs.” She pauses for a bit. I shrug. I don't really have time to think much more about it as we're called back i to finish our work.
The Alpha's interruption put us a bit behind our already tight schedule.
When we're finished up with the baking and everything is on the cooling racks, most of the omegas head upstairs to do a spot check of the guestrooms, or to help with the finishing touches in the ballroom and dining room.
I stay behind with a few omegas and Abigail to clean up the mess from this morning's baking marathon. We all look at the mess surrounding us and at each other.
“Coffee break?” Abigail suggests, “No use starting all this without the proper level of caffeine in our system.” Everyone agrees enthusiastically as she heads to the coffee maker to brew a fresh pot.
I sigh and look around trying to figure out where to start. I might as well start bringing all the equipment to the sink so th we can deep clean the counters and set up for dinner prep. I pick up a tray and immediately drop it back on the counter when I hear a voice, crystal clear, in my head.
