Chapter 12

The Anti-simulation chamber consisted of several rows of dolphin-shaped cubicles. Each cubicle bathed in a soft light with a reclining seat and a monitor.

Kendall handed each team member a white helmet with instructions not to put on the helmets immediately.

“These helmets are fitted with real-time positioning and information systems and thermal weapons sights,” Kendall paused. She turned her attention to Indranil and stormed up to him.

“Lakshit!”

“Yes, Major it is I.”

“Remove your fucking turban.”

“But, Major, this turban always travels with me. Some people have a nose ring or something indeed small for luck to be prosperous and successful. I have my delightful turban.”

“Remove it. Now!”

“Yes, Major.”

A man’s voice filled the room. “Commander Kinsman, all systems are go. We’re ready when you are.”

The monitors blinked as they came on and displayed the Denizen 1 logo.

Gideon and Kendall went from person to person and helped them into their cubicles.

At Callum’s cubicle, Gideon said, “Lean back into the seat. Control will tell you when to put on the helmets. The yellow button on the armrest of the seat is to seal the glass dome. Press it when control tells you to.”

“Where are you going to be?” Callum asked.

“Right here, watching you guys from the control room. Once the cubicle locks, control will instruct you what to do. Remember what I told you, no emotion and don’t try anything brave, let the Androids do their work. They know what to do.”

“Commander, is the team ready?” A voice asked.

“Nearly there, Tumelo.”

“Good luck, Gideon. I’ll be here when you get back.”

Gideon turned and made his way to join Tumelo in the control room.

Inside his cubicle, Callum waited for the announcements to come.

“Observers, put on your helmets. These helmets are self-adjusting and will fit your head perfectly.”

Callum placed his helmet over his head.

“Outside your helmet, by your right ear, there is a button, find it and press it. This initiates a range of controls. They come to life automatically once the countdown begins.”

Callum pressed the button and it made a click sound in his ear.

“On the armrest of your recliner, there is a yellow button. It closes the cubicle. Press this button now.”

Callum pressed the button and waited as the glass dome covered his cubicle.

“Gauntlet rescue operation is now in progress. The estimated time you have out there is 20 minutes. Once you have completed the operation successfully, we’ll bring you back. Good luck all. Counting down: 10…9…8…7…6…5…4…anti-simulation sequence is initiated…2…1.”

The entire team of 18 suddenly disappeared into thin air.
