chapter 17
Pulling over in front of the station, Alex and Raphe got out with me, but the other two stayed in the car waiting for us. “You two don’t need to come in with me. You can stay in the car.” “You are not going in there alone. We don’t know what could be in there. So get going.”
Leading me into the station, everyone looked at me but didn’t say a word, I think they’re scared of the two goon’s right behind me. Good.
Walking through the station, it all seems like it was so long ago since I was here, but it hasn’t been all that long. Most of the officers I know, but there are a few new faces, I don’t recognize here. Stopping at my desk there are a few different folders there, I’m not sure how long they have been there, but I looked at them, piled them up and went through everything else on my desk. Alex sat in the other chair next to my desk, looking at everything on my desk. For five years I have been a cop in this town, and a detective. Now all this it’s like it’s not even my life anymore. Making the decision I went into my computer found anything I thought we might need at some point and e-mailed it all to myself and went through everything on my desk.
“What are you doing?” “I am going through everything seeing what I can close out; because I am going to go into my boss’s office and resign from this job. Like you said everything about me has changed, and I don’t think I can do this, at least not right now.”
“Are you sure you want to be doing this? You don’t have to this right now. Take some time and think about it.” Taking a deep breath. “I don’t have to think about it. I know what I want to do.” Raphe didn’t say anything, just watched us, and everything going on around us.
Typing a few more things on my computer, I closed out and sent my files to another detective, and went to captain’s office, of course with Alex and Raphe right behind me. Knocking we walked in, after she said come in and closed the door behind us.
“It is good to see you Zaphira. I’m glad to see your doing better. Who are these other gentlemen?” “There’s friends of mine. I came into say I’m resigning.” “You’re what? Has something happened?” “No. I just need some time off is all.” “How much time do you need? Are you all right?”
Putting up my hands to stop her. “I’m burnt out. I need to regroup. And the only thing I can think to do is leave work for a while.” “Well I’m sorry you feel that way. I hope you will come back to us. You can take all the time you need.” “Thank you. But I’m not sure that will happen anytime soon. But thank you.” Getting up, we shook hands, walking out of her office I grabbed my stuff from my desk, and the guys walked me out.
“I just have one last stop to make. I will meet the two out in the car.” “We are not going anywhere.” “I’m sorry, you can’t I’m going downstairs, and you can’t go down there with me.” Alex moved closer to me.
“I am not leaving you here alone.” Sighing, I got him a guest badge, and led him down the stairs, heading to the evidence room.
“Hey Joe. Listen I need in there, I won’t be long, I just need to look for something.” He nodded, and pressed a button never taking his eye off of Alex, who is standing very close to me.
Walking through the door, I started looking through boxes. “What are you looking for exactly?” “I’m not really sure, but I think I will know it if I see it.”
Thinking about what he said about Raphe looking for whoever made me a fire demon. If it was someone I arrested, then maybe there belongings will be down here. Going through box after box, but I’m not getting anything from any of them.
“Okay I give up, let’s go. If Raphe is still up there, he’ll be scaring the people I used to work with.” He nodded, taking my hand, we walked back upstairs and sure enough Raphe is still up there waiting for us, sitting at my desk, holding my box of stuff.
Looking at us, he stood as we came up to him. “We’re ready to go.” I said, setting my weapon on my desk, but I didn’t leave my badge though. Walking towards the door, the captain caught up with us.
“Zaphira don’t go yet.” Taking my hand, she set my gun in my palm. “Don’t leave this. You might need this, in case you want to come back.”
Shaking my head. “No it’s procedure, you leave, and you give your gun back.” Handing it back to her, I said good bye and the three of us walked out. Alex took my arm, leading me back to the car.
Raphe still has my box, but neither one of them said a word to me as we climbed into the car.
Once we’re all locked in, Raphe told them to drive, and told them our next location. Looking at him. “Why are we going to the wolves bar? But didn’t all the wolves leave?”
Shaking his head.
“Not all of them. A few stayed, to protect their territory, the vamps will take whatever they can.”
“Alright. So why are we going there then?” I asked adjusting my seat belt. “Your friends have taken out a few of them, and I want to talk to them about where they were when it happened.” “Do you think it’s such a good idea, to go back there?”
He gave me a look. “But don’t you want to go back see your friends?” I nodded. “I do. But I don’t know if it will be a good idea or not. I want to see Rolf and the others, but I’m a fire demon now, and I don’t know how they will react to that.” Giving me a look, he said.
“Well you won’t have to worry. I already told them that you’ve made the transition, and there good with it. There just be happy to see you. Rolf told me himself. He has been worried about you.” We drove off, heading to the wolves den. I just hope that they won’t be upset with me over this.
