You Broke Me First Phoenix Mountain Series Book 3

Chapter 3

DARCY

With my training bag slung over my shoulder, I walk through the halls of the Recruitment Unit. Craig ‘Not Hot' Bennet is walking behind me.

I get a clap on the back and chest as Peter catches up with me. “About time you showed up.”

I scowl. “I would have been here earlier if the princess back there didn’t have to stop for a bathroom break every hour.”

I look back and Craig is scowling.

Peter brings out his clipboard. “Ok. So we have lists from six of the packs. I’ll need you to drive out to Bears place to get his. He keeps forgetting and I’m about to lose my shit.”

I arch a brow. “Are you even capable of losing your shit?” I’ve never seen Peter lose his shit ever. The guys so damn cool and collected, it’s almost sickening.

“You know what I mean.” He crosses his arms.

I rub my head as we walk into the dining court. “Ok. I’ll get it this week.”

“Thanks.” Peter says.

I almost trip when I see a pair of long, tanned legs crossed at a table.

I bite my lower lip. My wolf perks. The Hunt is on. My heart does a little flutter.

Without taking my eyes off those sexy calves, I slap Peter’s chest. “Hey…see you at the meeting…”

I walk away without getting a response.

My eyes are glued to the juicy thigh that disappears under the skirt. My mouth waters at the sight of her full breast under her tight shirt. As her fork brings food to her pouty lips, I bite my knuckle and almost whine.

I collect myself as I get closer. Slowing my heart rate and try to casually adjust the semi in my shorts.

I don’t even ask, I just slide myself into the seat across from her.

Her face is so fucking stunning. Even though she’s looking at me like I’m a psycho. Her eyes are wide and her mouth is small as she slowly chews her food.

I flash a smile and lean on the table. “Allie, right?”

She swallows and leans back. “Yes.”

“Remember me?” I grin.

“Yes. Alpha Bourne.” She nods.

“That’s me.” I look around. “So. Having lunch?”

She looks at her plate and back up to me. “It looks like that, yes.”

“Cool. What are you doing after?” I ask.

“Working.” She says as she fills her fork and puts the food in her mouth.

God, how I wish I was that fork.

“Ok. What about after that?” I lean back.

She arches a brow. “Still working.” She pulls up her crystal and dangles it.

I chuckle. “Right. Forgot.”

I cross my leg and fold my hands on my lap. I bounce my runner and look around.

“So. What do you do for fun?” I look at her.

She drops her fork and wipes her mouth. Lots of dirty images flooded my mind just with that one move.

“Look. Alpha Bourne…” She starts.

“Darcy.” I grin.

She narrows her eyes. “Alpha Bourne. I’m working right now. I don’t have time for what ever this is. So, if you’ll excuse me.”

She gets up and starts to walk her tray to the garbage.

I jump up and follow her. “Allie. I don’t want to disturb your work, I just want a drink or two. You know, just hang out.”

She places her tray on top of the garbage can. She turns to me. “No.”

She walks away. I follow her, stepping in line with her. “Why not?”

“Because you’re a job. I don’t get involved. I just babysit.” She says.

“Ok. Speaking of that. Babysit me. Switch Craig. I think I’d be safer in your hands than his.” I glance at her.

“No.” She huffs. “Alpha Bourne. I really must go.”

“Oh Ok. Uh…we'll talk later. I'll just…let you think on it.” I yell to her as I watch her cross the hall to the stairs of the second level.

I whine as I watch her perfect body move up each step. “Damn.” I spin around and go back to my bag.

I bend down and pick it up.

“You! Get over here!”

I turn around and Zane is stepping up to me fast.

“Me?” I point to my chest.

“Yes, you. Come here!” He growls and grabs me by the back of the neck. He starts dragging me out of court.

“What the hell, man?” I protest.

He stops and throws a finger in my face. “When were you going to tell us you were the first, huh?”

“What the hell are you talking about?” I scowl at him.

“Don’t play dumb with me.” Zane eyes me. He shoves me. “Zanders office. Now.”

“Ok. Ok. Geez. Fuck. Calm down." I rub my neck.

“Get going.” He grits.

We head to the Alpha building.

In the elevator, I’m totally confused. “I don’t know what this is, but you got the wrong guy.”

Zane laughs sarcastically. He shakes his head. “Oh no. I got the right idiot.”

“Hey!” I scowl.

He turns. “So you have a weird piece of a fucking prison and not once thought, hey maybe I should tell someone?”

I turn to him. “I don’t know what your fucking talking about?” I growl.

The elevator dings and he pushes me out. We walk to Zanders office and Zander lets us in.

“Sit.” Zane barks.

Zander comes around and leans on his desk. I sit down and look between the two. “I really don’t know what I’m doing here.”

Zane leans on his knees. “You really don’t know about a piece of iron about yay long and fucking glowing?!” His brows come together as he raises his voice.

“How?” I look at him.

“I fucking saw it dude.” He taps his temple.

“You…the guy…in your visions…that was me?” I point to my chest.

“Yes, it was you!” Zane flops back in the couch.

“So the guy that you saw…performing. That was me too?” I arch a brow.

Zane groans. “Yes. It was.”

I lean on my thighs and look him square in the eyes. “You saw my junk, didn’t you?”

He presses his lips together.

My brows shoot up. “You did!”

I lower my head.

“Dude, I couldn’t help it, ok.”

I raise my head and look at him. Staring into his eyes.

I throw my hand at him. “Ok. Tell me. How did it look to you because I’m just not confident my moves are sexy enough…”

“DARCY!” Zane yells, throwing his head back with his hands gripping his hair.

Zander groans, wrapping an arm around his waist and covering his face with his other hand.

“What? I’m just looking for input from a fresh pair of eyes.” I hold my hands out.

“The piece!” Zander growls, flopping his hand down.

I lean back. “It’s dead. In fact, I don’t even know where it is.” I flick my gaze between them

“You lost it?!” Zane growls.

“Please, tell me you didn’t.” Zander shakes his head. He wraps his arms around his waist again.

“I think I did. I don’t know. I was so fucking drunk the whole thing is a blank.” I rub my head.

“Great. The fate of the world rests in the hands of a sex addicted drunk.” Zane scrubs his face and hair.

“Hey! I resent that. I’m not a drunk.” I point to him and scowl.

Zander heaves a breath. “Ok. Go home and find it. In the meantime, what did you get off it?”

I blink at him. “What do you mean?”

“Your piece is supposed to help us find the next one.” Zander says. “So, it was glowing, we figure it was supposed to do something like give you some sort of clue. Did it?”

“I can’t remember, man. Blacked out is blacked out. I tied one on solid.” I say as I sit back.

“Fuck.” Zane grumbles.

Zander rubs his neck. “Ok. I’ll contact Azriel and see if he can help. Find that piece, Darcy.”

I tick my head. “Ok. I’ll try.”

I stand and start to walk out. Zane is right behind me.

I spin around to him. “Come at me like that again and I’ll knock you out. I swear.” I point in his face.

He scowls and stamps his foot me making me jump back a bit. I look at him. “I thought your anger issues were fixed.”

“Not when I have to deal with morons.” He glares at me.

I point to him as I walk backwards. “You need a massage, my friend. I know this place that has girls with chests so big…” I hold out my hands.

He grabs my shoulders, spins me around and shoves me. “Get going.” He grits.

“Ok. Ok.” I growl.

****

At home, I rush through the door. I jog to my office and once in, I look around.

I go to my desk and flick through all the junk on it. I open all the drawers and rummage through them.

I get on my hands and knees looking under it.

Popping back up, I walk to my bar. I look around the bottles. I lift them. They’re empty. “That sucks.” I mutter.

With my hands on my hips, I walk to center of my floor. I lower my head and think. I look at my shoe and run the toe of it across my beige carpet.

I chew on my lip as I think. I vaguely remember it falling somewhere.

I notice vacuum lines in the carpet.

I turn my head to the door. “Marcus!”

A beat later he’s coming up the hall. “Yep.”

“When were the cleaners here?” I ask.

“Few days ago.” He shrugs.

I hang my head and roll my eye to him. “The garbage still here?”

“Yeah. Why?” He asks.

I tilt my head back and look at him.

****

I stand with my arms crossed staring at the pack house dumpster.

“I’m not going in there.” Marcus says from my side shaking his head.

“Yes, you are.” I grab his arm and pull him to the dumpster.

I toss the lid open and the smell hits us like a ton of bricks.

We arch back. “Ugh…fuck.” I say covering my nose.

Marcus has his nose covered too. “Man. You can’t be serious.”

I look at him. “I’ve gotta find that piece, man.”

I step on a bracket and jump up over the edge. Marcus joins me. As we sink into the garbage, Marcus points to me. “You’re paying me double for this.”

I stand up straight. “I don’t pay you.”

“Well, if you did. It would be double.” He scowls.

“Just…start ripping.” I grumble.

We start tearing through bags, soon we’re covered in garbage juice and gunk.

It was over forty minutes before I feel something while I'm digging in the corner. “Hey…hey! I think I found it.” I pull out a shredded bag and fumble around until I free it. Sure enough it was my iron piece coating in some sort of cheese.

I laugh and turn to Marcus. “I found it!” I start bouncing. “Woo! I’m the king baby!” I bounce in a circle with my arms in air, wooing it up until I see long legs, stunning face and gorgeous hair. She’s standing in the side driveway with a leg kicked out, her arms folded and a brow arched.

I slowly lower my arms. Shit. I look down at myself coated in garbage. I give myself a whiff and cringe.

I look at Allie.

In a split second, I’m over the edge and landing on the gravel dirt with a dust cloud pooling around my sneakers.

I put my hands up. “This isn’t what it looks like.”

She bites her top lip, her brows go up and she nods slowly. She scratches her hair. “Is…um…Craig around? I need to charge his crystal.”

I suck in a breath, flopping my arms to the side. “He’s in the house.” I motion a hand to it.

She eyes me up and down and spins in her heels. As I watch her walk away, I whine at my humiliation. Hanging my head with my hands on my hips.

Marcus jumps down and joins my side. He plants his hand on my shoulder. “Could be worse. You could have been in a sewer.” He leans over and sniffs me. “Though you smell like you were.”

He lifts his arm and sniffs himself. He cringes.

I whine and kick at the dirt. “Damnit!” I say before turning and slumping to the house.
