Chapter 4 - Mate!
Danni plonks her bag on my unmade bed and turns to look at me.
“Shower!” she orders, looking at me sternly.
“I had one last night.”
“And you’ve been in your jim-jams all day, shower,” she orders again. I roll my eyes and head for the bathroom. When I come out, I’m wearing just a towel.
“What’s this?” Danni asks, indicating on the wet patch on the floor, the colour of the carpet lighter than the rest.
“Nothing,” I say, giving her a strange look.
“Whatever, we’ll talk later,” she says, going over to her bag and throwing clothes onto the bed.
“Skirt and tank top,” I say, picking up the brown buckled leather skirt and black ribbed V-neck tank.
“I like your thinking,” she muses, handing them to me. I grin and walk into my wardrobe to get clean underwear. I come out in the outfit and see Danni wearing a thigh-length skirt with a white scoop-neck tank.
“We look hot,” Danni states, looking at me. I laugh.
“Makeup?” I ask. She nods and walks over to my vanity, where she sits down. Generally, I wear very little makeup, using only green and skin-coloured concealer to cover my bruises, but I have enough makeup to dress myself up if I need to.
I apply makeup on Danni, and when I’m done, I do my own. Then Danni helps me straighten my blonde hair before she ties her hair into a high ponytail. We sling our small clutch bags over our shoulders, and then we’re done.
“How are we going to sneak out without Hailey finding out?” I ask. I had thought about it, but I’d have it if she caught me out of my room.
“Window,” Danni smirks, pointing to my window. My bedroom is on the second floor, so it’s not a far leap down, but I hesitate, making Danni roll her eyes.
“I’m surprised you never thought of it earlier,” she states.
“Earlier, I had a human body that broke easily,” I reply, placing my hands on my hips.
“Come on then,” Danni smiles, opening the window for me. I peer over the edge of the sill and look down. Sighing, I place one leg over the sill, then the other, and jump.
As my feet hit the grass, I feel the bones in my ankle crunch, but the pain lasts only a moment before it heals and the pain goes. I smile at Danni, who grins at me from the window.
Once on the grass, we walk down the road that leads up to the pack house and to the gate. The packhouse looked like an upper-class gated community from the outside, and each family had a password or code we used to get in. Mine is ‘Saucepan Man,’ after one of my mum’s favourite characters from the Enchanted Wood. Danni types in her code, and the gate slowly opens, letting us out. During the day, we have deltas guarding the entrance, but at night they patrol the fence line, making it easier for us to escape.
“Here it is!” Danni smiles as an Uber drives up. I shake my head at my friend; unlike me, she gets to go out, so tonight, I follow her lead.
I smile and look out the window, watching the houses turn into larger buildings as the driver heads closer towards the city. I haven’t been out at night into the town since dad mated with Hailey, and I’m in awe of the lights and the buildings as we come closer to the centre of Worthington’s nightlife.
The Uber driver stops at the side of the road, and I pay him before we slide our bottoms out the door.
“Let’s do this,” I say to Danni, who squeals and wraps her arms around my shoulders.
“Finally! I get to drink and dance with my bestie,” she grins. Grabbing my hand, she leads me towards the ‘Indifferent,’ which has a long line and waves to the bouncer I recognise as from our pack.
He waves us in, and Danni squeals again. The room is full of people, and from my heightened smell, I sense humans, fairies and werewolves in the mix. Danni led me to the bar and ordered drinks after asking me what I wanted. With cocktails in our hands, we edge around the dance floor’s perimeter, watching as circles of girls dance with their handbags in the middle and on the floor, and small groups of people dance next to each other.
I see Tanner standing at the side with his friends, and I catch his attention. He smiles at us and walks over.
“Girls, you made it,” he grins, looking at us, a glass of beer in his hands. We nod.
“Do you want to dance?” he asks me, and I nod in response. Tanner grabs my hand and pulls me onto the dance floor. I wrap my arms around his neck, and he places his hands on my hips as the music plays. He tries to talk to me over the music, but I can’t hear him, and he has to repeat himself a few times.
After failing at holding a conversation, Tanner suggests leaving the dance floor, and I readily agree. We find Danni sitting with the rest of Tanner’s friends at a table and join him.
- It’s so busy here, can we go somewhere else? – I link Danni. She looks over at me from where she sits and pouts.
“Okay, boys, we’re off,” Danni tells them, moving from the lap of one of Tanner’s friends.
“Oh, but Danni,” the boy pleads, but she laughs as I approach him.
“You have my number; call me,” she goes before walking with me out of the club and into the cold night air.
“You didn’t find your mate, huh?” she asks me as we continue walking up the busy street.
“No,” I laugh, “but who was that?” I ask, referring to the guy she had been sitting on.
“Not my mate either,” she giggles before steering us towards an Irish bar with a small line waiting outside.
It takes a little while for us to get to the front of the bar, people are coming and going inside, and the pub looks popular. A group of humans walk out before the bouncer lets us in, and I marvel at the inside of the bar.
Tall bar tables and stools were located around the room, and a small section for dancing existed. The bar was trimmed in dark wood with a banner of the Irish flag strung above the bar to our left. I take it in with a grin on my face.
“This is so cool,” I admire. Danni returns my smile and is about to say something when I smell something.
“Hold that thought,” I wink, leaving her and walking through the throngs of people towards the bar.
- Wait, what’s going on? – Danni links, but I don’t respond. Calla is excited at the smell, and I focus solely on following it.
I walk up to a bar and zero in on a man I see sitting there. He looks tall and well-built from the back of his head, and I press my lips together as I approach. Thoughts rush into my head, like, what do I do now? Can he sense me? What do I say? These thoughts are quickly dismissed when he turns from his seat and looks at me, his blue eyes shining in amusement.
My mouth opens to say something while Calla screams the word ‘mate’ in my head.
“So, little wolf, you must have just turned eighteen then,” he says, smirking at me. He stands up and walks over to me.
“Major Greystone?” I stutter.
“Mine,” he says, leaning down and kissing my lips. When we touch, tingles vibrate, and I feel weak. Major Greystone pulls my body into his, leaving one hand around my waist and the other on my cheek as he enters my mouth with his tongue.
“What the hell!” I hear Danni cry out. Major Graystone pulls away from me, and we both look at Danni, who is staring at us with a stunned look on her face.
“Is he?” she asks, beginning to smile. We nod, and her grin widens.
“Come home with me,” Major Greystone whispers into my ear, his hot breath sending shivers through my body.
- Yes! Yes! Yes! – Calla screams in my head, the slut.
- I am; we are not sluts! But I want him! – Calla says, making me giggle. I nod, looking into the Major’s eyes, which sparkle at me.
“I’m taking her back to mine. Viggo here will look after you,” Major Greystone says to Danni, indicating with his head to the side. A man walks out from the shadows, his white-blonde hair pulled back into a ponytail. Viggo nods at Danni, who stands there surprised.
“Wait, what is your name?” I ask as he begins to lead me away from the bar.
“Dorian,” he smiles. Dorian, I say in my head. Dorian. I like that.
Dorian turns again and leads us out of the club, me following trustingly behind. As soon as we walk through the threshold, the cold air hits us, but I have no time to ponder it when Dorian presses me against the wall and kisses me again. I wrap my arms around his neck and run my hands through his hair, moaning as his lips spread a warm trail down my neck.
“Do you want me, mate?” he murmurs huskily in my ear, making me shiver again. I nod.
“Good,” he murmurs, looking at me with sparkly blue eyes. Dorian leads me to a car, opens the door for me and slides into the seat behind me.
“Take me to my hotel,” he tells the driver, and I look at him, a little surprised. Dorian smiles.
“I’ll tell you everything soon,” he says, trailing his fingers along my thigh. I can feel myself go warm as sparks ignite at his touch.
Without thinking, I lean towards him, placing one leg on one side of his lap as I straddle him, my dress folding upwards.
“Fuck,” I hear him whisper as my core presses against the hardness in his pants. I bite at his lower lip before pressing my lips against his. His tongue reaches into my mouth and meets my own, and I enjoy the sensation of my tongue touching his as we kiss.
“We’re here,” Dorian eventually says. I pull away from him and notice the car parked in a lit carpark. I feel myself blush, which makes Dorian chuckle, and I get off his lap. The car door opens, and Dorian slides out first, growling at the driver, who stands there with his head bowed. I give Dorian a quizzical look as I follow him out. I didn’t think Majors were bowed to in the fairy world. I wondered if Dorian was what we would consider high blood, but I hadn’t looked that far in my fairy book.
Dorian takes my hand, interlacing our fingers as he leads me towards an elevator.
“Where are we?” I ask. I thought he was a Major in the Fay army; it looks like we’re in a hotel or apartment building.
“We’re going up to my suite,” Dorian says, smiling at me as the doors close behind us. I watch as he scans a card and punches in a number. I want to question him, but I don’t want to seem as stupid as I feel.
The elevator doors open, and my mouth opens in surprise. Instead of a hallway, which I expected if we were in a hotel, I’m met with a foyer that leads into a kitchen area to the right and a living room to the left. Who is my mate?
