Chapter The truth
“No, no, not her.” I realized that I vocalized while I was unconscious.
I opened my eyes, and I was lying on the couch in Hughes’ office, Alina’s hands were on my forehead, Jack had both hands wrapped around mine, Hughes and Ed were standing over me.
“I knew she wasn’t ready, I shouldn’t have told.” Hughes said running his hands through his gray hair, messing it up.
“He killed her… In front of me.”
My words were like razors, they all sighed heavily, they knew, and that was the memory they were afraid I would know.
“Do you remember everything?” Jack asked with concern.
“I don’t know, I have a lot of flashes, and I saw a lot of blood and a lot of death, a lot of dead wolves, but I saw someone kill my father. My father was gray, right?”
“Yeah, his coat was very similar to Otto’s.” Hughes said without looking up, I knew everything brought him a lot of pain too.
“He was protecting us, a black wolf tried to attack us, but… He got in front of us and died right there.” I paused trying to take it all in, and I felt the tears streaming down my face. “Then Otto came and killed my mother, and he came to kill me too… My arm.” I said running my hand over my scar, it was Otto who did it.
“That’s what we didn’t want you to remember, sweetie. Imagine a 3 year old remembering that. That’s why we kept it from you, it was to try to spare you some of that pain.”
Alina said hugging me, her eyes also had tears.
“But why? Why all this hate, why all this death?”
Hughes sat down next to me and said:
“In the Great Council, there is an Oracle, who makes prophecies, they divulge phrases that would possibly be clues to the future, they are enigmatic and many times they come in pieces to be complete, there are wolves that believe, wolves that don’t believe, and wolves who take it as the absolute truth. Otto takes it as the absolute truth. Shortly before your parents met, the Oracle released a sentence that said: “When good and evil meet”. Two weeks later your parents had the Soulmeet , the daughter of the Alpha of our Pack, and the son of the Alpha of the Forsaken, together."
Hughes stopped and sighed, “good and bad” Did Otto understand he would be bad? Considering the little I’ve seen of him and the Forsaken, I wouldn’t have any doubts either.
“Your father grew up in the Forsaken group, but he didn’t feel like one, he was a good boy, they got married and came to live here in Vila, at first he had difficulties adapting to the rules, after all he lived his whole life without them, but as I told you, he was a good person. Otto never accepted that, several times he came here wanting to take them. A year later, another sentence came out of the Oracle “The fruit of this union, designed the end of evil”. Weeks later your mother found out she was pregnant. At this point Otto was crazy, and he was sure you would end the Forsaken, he orchestrated an attack on your mother, in one of them your grandmother was killed trying to protect your mother and you.”
Hughes stopped again, he looked down shaking his head, and Alina put her hands on his shoulders.
“These were difficult days for the guard, we lost many wolves, and the surveillance was 24 hours with your parents.” Edward said, as head of the guard he must remember a lot from that time.
“You were born and it was an immense joy, but you never left the Village and we kept watch, we were still at war. After the first year the attacks subsided and we thought that maybe we would finally have peace. Until after you complete your three years, your father’s mother died, she had cancer, and Otto was sure that was the beginning of the end of the Forsaken, he lost his female Alpha and almost died along with it, the rage seeking revenge kept him alive, and with all the rage in his heart, he orchestrated his greatest attack on us. He ordered everyone to try to kill you at all costs, and I ordered everyone to protect you at all costs. The horror was immense, the attacks of the Forsaken are more difficult because they don’t have an ounce of compassion or humanity, they attack like monsters. One of Otto’s trusted wolves, went to attack you, your mother protected you and your father threw himself in front of you, and he died doing it. When Otto found out about this, he killed the wolf and attacked your mother angry and merciless, he would have attacked you if you hadn’t been so close to the border and run. After the war we had so many casualties that the war was unfeasible, I talked to Otto, and you among humans and without transmuting, were harmless. He’s authorized to leave you alone. Until you turn 22.”
“And you put the guard behind me again.” I completed, I remember Jack’s conversation telling me that he and some guards had been watching me since my 22nd birthday.
“The rest you already know.” Hughes said, as he took my hand, and stroked it lightly, making circles with the spirits.
“That’s why you acted so strange that morning, when I told you about my dream about the gray wolf, you thought my memories were already unlocking.”
“Yes, Alina wanted to tell you, but I thought it could wait a little longer.”
I still had flashes of the horror of seeing my parents being killed, it was understandable because my mind blanked out, and I was probably more relaxed because Alina kept her hands on my head, I’m sure I’d be hyperventilating and have a headache if I wasn’t. Is it over there.
“It all makes more sense now, but it really is a lot to process. Thanks for telling me everything Hughes.”
“Weren’t you angry? For not looking for you sooner?”
Hughes asked without thinking, I’m sure he regretted it the second the words came out, but the question was genuine, he believed I would be angry.
“I managed to stay, I had before, when I didn’t know, without understanding why.” I settled down on the sofa and sat down. “But listening to it all, and remembering all the death and pain that happened, you did what you believed was right, and safest for me, didn’t you?”
“Yes.” Hughes hugged me, tighter than I believe anyone had ever hugged me before.
