Chapter 26
“Huh? Mom, about that… Because of his job, he has to go on business trips quite often. He’s leaving on a business trip tomorrow morning, actually. It’ll take at least a week or two before he returns.” Calla hurriedly came up with an excuse.
“Is he always going to be away on a business trip? How are you two going to have any alone time then?” Carol remarked worriedly.
“He gets an additional allowance for each business trip he goes on. He needs to earn more money to support the baby and me, so he doesn’t have a choice,” Calla quickly said.
“That’s true. In that case, once Mercer comes back, you must bring him over for a meal,” Carol declared before heading to her room, still studying the marriage license.
Once the door shut behind her, Calla finally exhaled in relief.
She had finally gotten over this hurdle! As for the next one two weeks later, she would cross that bridge when she came to it.
Calla went back to her room. As soon as she closed the door, Zoey, who was doing her homework, turned to her and said with a grin, “Congratulations, Cal! You survived!”
After sitting down on the bed, Calla asked quietly, “Who came over today? How did Mom find out about my pregnancy?”
Zoey glanced at the door before muttering, “Rudy called Mom today and said some horrible things that made Mom cry!”
When in private, Calla and Zoey didn’t refer to Rudy as their father. They addressed him by name instead. In their eyes, their father was dead.
“Peggy must’ve told Rudy!” Calla fumed.
“Peggy has it out for our entire family,” Zoey growled angrily.
Clenching her fists, Calla growled, “That’s putting it lightly. She and I are mortal enemies!
Calla secretly swore to make sure Peggy and Jill got what they deserved!
The next morning, before heading to work, Calla bought a cheap cubic zirconia ring and some branded chocolates.
Once she arrived at the office, she put on a bright smile and handed out the chocolates.” Hey, everyone. Here, have some chocolates!”
“Why are you handing out chocolates, Ms. Sherman?” a male colleague teased.

Such was the case at the workplace. People often fought over power and position. They atan liked comparing themselves to each other if they were better than others, their aga would get a boost if they were even slightly worse off in any way, they would be filled with envy and jealousy
