Chapter 22

After leaving the hospital, Calla stood by the roadside and tried to flag down a cab.

However, a black Bentley shot out from behind and came to a sudden halt beside her.

Alarmed, Calla jumped backward. Immediately after that, she saw Mercer coming down from the backseat of the car.

She wanted to flee, but he grabbed her shoulder before she could.

“How dare you trick me?” Mercer fumed.

“I… wouldn’t dare to, of course! My stomach stopped hurting, so I…” Calla attempted to stammer out an explanation.

Out of nowhere, Mercer fixed his gaze on her and declared, “Let’s get married!”

Calla stared at him in disbelief.

What was going on? That wasn’t how she envisioned things playing out between them. Shouldn’t he be tossing a check or a debit card to her and instructing her to deal with the pregnancy herself?

“Married? Don’t joke like that. I might actually believe you,” Calla said. She firmly believed he was kidding around and didn’t mean what he said.

Plenty of women would kill to marry him. If he would marry a woman just because she was pregnant with his child, he would probably have married someone ages ago.

Still looking Calla in the eye, Mercer stated, “I’m being serious!”

Calla panicked after meeting his gaze. He looked dead serious about it, and it didn’t seem like he was joking. In fact, he never cracked a joke with her before.

Her mind was a mess. She couldn’t believe he wanted to marry her. Although she had considered all kinds of possibilities, this particular possibility never occurred to her.

Calla’s prolonged silence made Mercer’s expression harden, “Could it be that you don’t

want our child?”

“Who said I don’t want the child? I’ll definitely give birth to the baby!” Calla instantly

retorted.

Mercer smiled faintly and said in a gentler tone, “That’s good.”

“But…” Calla eyed him hesitantly. She wasn’t sure if she wanted to marry him.

He had everything a woman could possibly want in a husband–wealth, knowledge, looks, and a distinguished background. That being said, she was simply an ordinary

woman. Marrying a guy like him would be too much pressure for her!

“But what? Do you want our child to be called a bastard child by others?” Mercer asked as he looked sternly at Calla.

“Of course not!” Calla responded reflexively.

Even though the baby was really just an embryo right now, she was already ready to dedicate her life to the baby.

“Excellent. Let’s head over to the courthouse now,” Mercer said. He took Calla’s hand and led her to the car. Feeling the warmth from his hand, she felt a sense of security washing over her. Despite not knowing him very well, she believed he would take good care of her and their child.

He was such a handsome and accomplished man. Surely their child would inherit his DNA. Either way, she was bound to give birth to a wonderful child.

As the car moved steadily down the street, Calla looked at Mercer somewhat dazedly and asked, “Are we heading to the courthouse to register our marriage?”

Mercer glanced at her and chuckled. He looked ahead and said, “You’re always sharp and quick on the uptake at work. Why are you the opposite when dealing with your personal life?”

Pursing her lips, Calla glared at him and shot back, “I have to be on my toes at work. How else would I be able to slave away for the scrooge?”

Mercer frowned at the nickname. With a grim expression, he said, “The courthouse will be closing for the day soon. I don’t have time to squabble with you.”

He took out two documents and passed them to Calla. “Here’s our prenuptial agreement. Take a look and see if there’s anything you wish to amend or add. If everything’s in order, go ahead and sign both copies.”

Calla froze for a moment before taking the prenuptial agreement. However, the moment she started reading it, her brows creased. Though the agreement was simple enough, the terms struck a raw nerve.
