Chapter Chapter Twenty-Four
Mar
The truck hit a rough bump and I heard the word “ouch”. Of course I didn’t realize it was me till I hurt so bad I knew it had to have been. I was in the bed of the truck looking at the sky as B was sitting with me. I turned my head far enough to see JP lying next to me and he was out cold. I pulled too much from him but I was afraid not to.
“Do not move too much until we stop,” B commanded watching me.
“What happened?” I asked hating hearing the ringing in my ears.
“You cast a spell that disabled all the rest of their fire arms. Then you and JP fainted. Charlie is rushing you back to town.”
“The humans?” I asked.
“They are on our trail and coming hard. I would assume the shifters are picking off who they can now that they do not have guns. Of course they all have knives or swords from the look of things and that can cause enough damage. We will need a new plan.”
“Shit,” I said as my head continued ringing.
The truck pulled to a stop in front of the two bars and Charlie jumped out and came running over. He looked at me and then his attention was on his brother. With B’s help I sat up and my head was throbbing. I wish this wasn’t happening but that didn’t make it go away.
“Why weren’t their bodies disabled with the spell? Why was it the weapons?” I asked still not knowing how any of this really worked.
“Intent,” Charlie cursed as he felt around on JP for injuries. “One or both of you must have been thinking to disable the weapons not the people holding them. Of course to disable a person would take a great deal more power and seeing how the two of you are now, you wouldn’t have stopped many, and the rest still would have had guns.”
He finally let JP lay back down and turned his attention to me. “He’s out for the count. It won’t be long before the humans get here. We need a new plan.”
I couldn’t agree more, but I was damned if I knew what it would be. I wasn’t the planning type, I was the kick their ass and then insult them type. My head dropped into my hands and I just tried breathing. I had to keep control. I had to do something. What the hell could I do?
“Mar,” Charlie screamed at me. I shook myself awake. I must have been ready to pass out again.
“Huh, what,” I said not remembering what was going on.
“Damn it. You can’t pass out. We need to do something before they get here.” Then he began shaking me like a rag doll.
“Oh my god,” I screamed but it came out as a whimper. He was shaking my brains loose. I knew this wasn’t helping. I was about to tell him so when all of a sudden a small trickle of his magic power entered my body.
I could feel it. It cleared my head instantly and my eyes must have shown because Charlie quit shaking me. He went to remove his hands but I grabbed on tight to them and held them. I let his power trickle into me. I was feeling better and when I placed a hand on JP I could sense his aura and give him some of Charlie’s till a small groan left his lips.
“Mar, what are you doing?” Charlie said trying to take his hands back but I held on tight.
“I can feel your magic,” I said getting my strength and my voice back. I bled more into JP and then I finally let Charlie go.
Charlie looked scared as he stared at me. “I thought you could only do that to JP?”
“Must be that changed, lucky us.” I said still exhausted.
“Speak for yourself, that’s some freaky ass shit.”
“Now you know how your brother and I feel,” I said not real charitably.
“It felt like I was being drained. I mean shit, well, let’s not rush to do that again.” He said still shaken.
“Just what every girl wants to hear after her first time.” I said sarcastically.
“JP is right, you are a smart ass. How about we figure out how to stay alive and then you can be a smart ass all you want.” Charlie said defensively. Sure, drain a little aura off someone and they treat you different.
Just then a car came pulling up and Carolyn jumped out. “Are you alright?”
Before I could answer Charlie began talking. “I am now that you are here. I don’t know who you are but I am happy to see you.”
“Oh lord save me from Worth’s with ego’s” I said looking at Carolyn. “Carolyn this is Charlie, Charlie this is Carolyn, and she is not for you to harass.”
“Oh, the level forty-five, it is a pleasure to meet you.” Charlie said beaming his best smile. The problem was he was a good looking guy, I hoped she didn’t fall for it.
“I hope you don’t evaluate everyone by their so-called power rating.” She said with a little menace to her voice. Then she turned to me “so besides almost getting killed what did you accomplish?”
Ouch, “all their fire arms are disabled. They are still coming but they are bringing swords and knives with them. We retreated back to here to regroup.”
“If regroup means wake up after falling unconscious from throwing too big a spell, then by all means regroup. Damn it Mar, you just learned how to throw spells, and you need to be careful. I can’t lose you sis, so how long before they get here?”
“With-in the hour.” B said from out of nowhere.
Carolyn and Charlie both jumped and I stifled a laugh. “I wonder if the shifters are whittling them down at all.”
“They have stopped a few more but they will never get all of them and some of the hunter types have bows. They were prepared for magic, and they are staying well maintained. This is an experienced bunch coming.” B explained.
I figured he disappeared to check on them, and probably take out a few himself but I wouldn’t ask. I was trying to think but I couldn’t think fast enough to make any good suggestions. I needed JP. I looked over at him and he was awake and looking at me.
“Hey baby,” I said stroking his face with the back of my hand.
“Hey back,” he worked out the words from a hoarse voice box. “Did you draw from Charlie?”
“A trickle, I couldn’t draw enough, fast enough, to be of any use. I gave you what I could. I hoped it helped.”
“Take Carolyn’s hand and then take mine and try again.” He said and I did what he asked.
At first nothing happened and I was about to let her go when all of a sudden I could feel a trickle and it kept opening wider like a damn was opening its clamps. JP sat up with wide eyes and looked at me. “Damn Mar,” was all he said as he got off the floor of the truck bed and sat up straight.
“What does it mean?” I asked scared.
“It means we have a chance,” JP said looking relieved.
JP
I helped pull the power from Carolyn into Mar, but I was amazed it worked. I wasn’t upset, just shocked, and now we had to do something with the fact that she was a real true to life magic focus. “Charlie, give me your hand.”
“No freaking way, that was some weird ass shit.” Charlie said backing away.
“Charlie give me your damn hand and do it now.” I said forcefully for once in my life.
Charlie did as I asked this time and I helped Mar open all of us up to the central flow. “Oh my god,” Charlie exclaimed as the feeling of power washed through all of us.
I knew none of us had this kind of power, but when it was combined with Mar’s instinct it upped the power we all had exponentially.
“Um Mar, do you know what this is doing?” Carolyn said quietly but I could hear her, we all could.
“I do, but don’t say anything.” Mar said smiling and I wasn’t sure what that was all about but both women were literally glowing. It was a good look on them. Charlie must have thought so too because he couldn’t take his eyes off of Carolyn. That was fine, I had my Mar, she was all I would ever need.
“Will you be able to cast a spell now?” B asked bringing us all back to reality.
“Oh yes,” Mar sighed without having to think to hard about it. We just needed the right spell to use. This was my department, so why was I floundering at the moment. My mind was getting lost in the struggle to maintain what we were supposed to be concentrating on.
“Damn it, everyone hold tight to your own auras. If they get intermingled we could lose ourselves in each other and that would not be a good thing.” I shouted as I watched the humans that were now in sight and coming closer.
“Oh I don’t know about that,” Carolyn said and her and Mar began laughing.
Crap, I needed to be the one to do this. I focused my mind and some of Mar’s power into shielding each of us in our own little bubble just sharing power but not ourselves as the magic flowed. It worked because I instantly felt like myself again.
“Party pooper,” Carolyn said laughing and Mar laughed with her.
“Focus ladies, here they come, and they don’t look happy.” I said seeing the knives and swords all drawn and heading right for us. I was still having trouble coming up with a spell when they were only fifty yards away I began to panic.
“Transverto,” Mar screamed and power flowed from us and through the first ranks of humans.
It was instantaneous. The spell traveled at least five hundred yards and encompassed all or most of all the human attackers. Where once came a raging mob bent on killing was now a field of pink and blue bunnies.
“Bunnies,” Charlie said staggering a bit.
“Yup, don’t let the bunny die, it means we are pregnant.” Mar said laughing hysterically and Carolyn joined her.
I hurried and made sure everyone was out of Mar’s grip and lowered them to the ground with B’s help. When the three were sitting on the ground and the two women were still laughing I turned to B. “We need to round them up before something happens to them or the shifters decide to get aggressive.”
“I’ll take care of that, help your family.” He said rushing to catch the bunnies.
“That’s right, catch the rascally rabbits,” Carolyn said and Mar snorted and they both began laughing again. I would have sworn they were drunk if I didn’t know better. The thing I didn’t know was why they were acting this way, and if it was a cause of alarm or not.
