CHAPTER - THIRTY TWO

Maybe I can do this.

Earlier today, as I was engrossed in a book, my fingers kept dancing and tapping against the softness of my comforter. It took me a moment to focus from the book to my fingers. As they moved, a little spark kept igniting with them. And as my fingers rose higher, so did the spark. From that little spark, they turned into little thunder like figures. I’d retracted my hand immediately. However, after a few minutes, when I wanted to try it again, there was nothing. It disappointed me. Maybe my powers had finally begun to show and maybe with just the slightest bit of concentration, I could channel them out like Zylen had told me.

I take a deep breath. Concentrate Faye.

Breathe in.

Breathe out.

Focus. I repeated in my mind as my fingers skimmed over the comforter once more. My eyes were closed by now. There was no spark or anything instantly, but I kept concentrating, not wanting to back out. I saw what I had just done, and I wanted to see it again. I needed to. My eyes were fixed and my fingers moved, glided over softly and smoothly. There was still nothing, but I didn’t give up. I kept repeating the process, concentrating further, eradicating all thoughts from my mind.

I began to visualize a little thunder like figure – like the one I’d seen before, in my mind. I imagined it growing as my fingers rose higher; I imagined every detail of it vividly in my mind. My fingertips began to feel tingly all of a sudden and the further I imagined the sparks in my mind, the more restless they got. I opened my eyes. Little sparks kept igniting where my fingertips would touch. Those little thunder figures returned and they got bigger as I raised my fingers upwards. I smiled lightly, watching them illuminate and grow. “That was my very first trick as well.” I heard a familiar voice. Demon boy.

The sparks were gone. I looked up, annoyed the demon had made me lose concentration. “Thank you,” I muttered sarcastically. “It’ll get easier with time. Soon, igniting sparks will be just one of your many talents.” He says. “What else is there?” I ask, shifting to sit cross-legged on the bed. “Have you ever wondered why there is sudden rain, or harsh winds even though it isn’t mentioned in those weather reports?” He asks. I look at him, into his hazel eyes as he speaks and nods. “That, little hamster, is the effect of a demon’s emotion.” He says. “Of course, not every demon can do it. Then your world would be a mess. Mostly – like always, Royals are capable of channeling their emotions onto the environment, but sometimes, normal demons can develop or learn the trick.” He explains.

“How long did it take for you to channel out all your powers?” I ask Zylen who’s sitting on the chair by the computer table. I look at him, sitting far away and before he can answer, I pat the spot next to me on the bed. He smirks, not saying anything as he takes the spot next to me. “I couldn’t hear you well, you know...” I want to hit myself. It would have been better if I didn’t say anything at all. “Couldn’t hear me? Even after the transformation. My, my, you definitely have to work on your lying skills.” Zylen muses and I slap him on the shoulder before I can stop myself. I don’t let him react to it, and prompt him on answering the question instead.

“It took me quite a lot of years. The first few years were spent in developing the powers, then many years in mastering them.” He says, not elaborating on dates. “Wait, you’re four hundred years old, right?” I ask, and he nods. “So that would mean, you were born in...1616?” I ask. He smirks again, “1615, to be exact.” He says. “When’s your birthday?” I pry. “Now why would I tell you that?” Zylen asks. “Please?” I say, latching onto his arm, unable to come up with any other approach. Zylen turns away, not meeting my eyes, “March 21st.” He mutters. “Why are you looking the other way? I have a lot more questions, so turn here.” I demand, curiosity rising in me about why he was avoiding eye contact. I liked looking into his eyes; they gave me courage and confidence when I spoke to him.

Zylen turns slowly towards me. I want to smirk, maybe even laugh a bit at the light pink that coat his cheek, but I don’t say anything. “When did you first come to the human world?” I ask, my hand slowly dropping from his arm. He answers, glad that I didn’t press about his blush, “1818.” He says, and I ask him to continue. Zylen King hesitates, probably questioning himself if it was okay to be giving me answers, but continues anyway.

“Like your friend...Alexandria?” He questions, I nod. “Like her, I too was born to my mother when she was human,” Zylen says.

“Your mother was a human?” I ask, shocked. “My mother, Verona Roosevelt, was found by a demon couple on the roads of Hiaven. She was – like you, a human with dormant genes and the couple took her in as their own daughter. My father and she met each other when he was on rounds around the kingdom. Once they were married, I was born and after that, she was turned into a demon as it was expected she would die from childbirth.” He says.

“But how is that possible? You said –” Like he knows what I’m about to ask, Zylen stops me. “I know you’re wondering that since I was born in 1615, where did Elvive go right?” He says and I nod. “Remember how you were told that Elvive broke the engagement and went to the human world to be with David?” He asks and I nod. “Well, that is the truth, but there’s one more thing. After the engagement was broken off, Elvive just disappeared. It was in the 1900′s when we heard that she had a lover – David.” He says.

So when I was told that the reason Elvive left the kingdom was because of my grandfather, it wasn’t true. She must have left after the engagement was broken and then met my grandfather years later. “Oh,” I say to myself. “Since I was born to a human and a demon, I was an initially a weak child. At first, I didn’t even show signs that I was a demon. It was after a few years that I began showing signs and exhibiting powers. Yet, still convinced that I could be put to harm, I wasn’t allowed to leave the kingdom until the 1800′s. The first time I’d come to the human world, I’d sneaked out. And then eventually, it became a routine.” He says.

“And?” I ask. “That’s enough for today.” Demon boy smirks. “What?” I question him. “I believe the storytelling time is over for today Faye,” Zylen says, the smirk growing as he rests on my bed on his back. “Can’t you tell me a bit more?” I plead. “Let me think about that...no.” My shoulders slump at his response. “Fine, whatever.” I lay next to him, hands on my stomach. “Doesn’t it ever get tiring?” I ask demon boy. “Doesn’t what ever get tiring?” Zylen asks back. “Being immortal,” I say.

“Sometimes, it does, but then I try to focus on the positive aspects.” Zylen King says. “Like?” I question. “Like how I’m going to be present for all the changes happening the world, how if there is a disaster or calamity my family and I will survive and maybe help others survive...” He says. “Hmm...” I think. “I guess being immortal is not a bad thing after all huh?” I ask him. He smiles a bit and looks towards me. I look into his eyes as he looks into mine, both of us being held together by an invisible force that binds us and makes us unable to move away from each other. And then Zylen speaks, as I continue looking into those hazel orbs that have me captured since the very beginning.

“I guess not.”
