CHAPTER - SEVENTEEN
I was alone at home today.
It was something I was used to, since my father used to spend a lot of time at the office before and now that he had gotten Cherry, well, he would spend a lot of time with her, so once again, I was left home alone on the promise that my dad would return home for dinner. I wouldn’t be surprised if he ran a little late; both of us weren’t fans of father-daughter bonding time. So, instead of wasting my time on the boring reality and comedy TV, I decided to sit down and do some homework. I figured I could even get something done for the project I was assigned, to...with Nolan.
I was just getting started on my work, when I heard it, repeatedly. That little noise I would have considered normal if anyone was there in the house apart from me. But there wasn’t, I was alone. The sun was setting, and I walked downstairs. After switching on the lights, I looked around, to find the source of that sound. It was precisely then that someone knocked on the door. Without looking in the peephole, I opened it, thinking it was my dad with takeout.
The person who stood before me surprised me.
“Jennifer,” I say, crossing my arms. “Faye. Sorry for those rocks being thrown at your house, I tried to stop them but it’s kind of a tradition.” She continues with a smile, looking behind her at the group of people. “And you only found my house you say?” I smile and say, sarcastically. “Ah, how sweet it is for us to be meeting like this at your house. Brings back so many memories of when we were friends, of course, you weighed thrice as much as you do now.” Jennifer jokes, and my smile grows.
“Well, let’s hope it’s not too sweet, I hear your family has a history of diabetes.” I laugh and continue, “Bye, bye, Jennifer and don’t throw rocks at my house unless you want to spend your night locked up.” I shut the door in her face. Ugh, what a horrible comeback. I wanted to slap myself. Well, at least that explains it; rocks caused the noise. Nothing else. It was silly of me to think otherwise. Ever since I saw the tools in Michael’s house and eavesdropped on Michael and Nolan’s conversation, I had been getting jumpy for almost nothing. Little noises, someone calling me, it felt like everything could set me off.
But then again, when I went upstairs, I heard that noise once more and soon, they were followed by little creaks, the sound made by our old staircase, which I had told my dad to fix more than a million times. I got up and the power went out. Power cut around here was pretty normal, which is why every house had a generator. And since today, there had been a power cut in the neighborhood since noon, I had switched on the generator. But it had been charged, and it was brand new so there was no way it would’ve stopped working.
I opened my drawer after stumbling my way to it. After rummaging through my things, I found a flashlight. After switching that on, I moved out of my room, after opening my door slowly. I walked down the staircase and as my foot touched the floor after the last step, the lights came back on. I dropped my flashlight. Figures moved by me in a blur. I was feeling dizzy all of a sudden from looking at the fast moving figures. It was like a huge window had been opened because there was a harsh wind that made me close my eyes and use my hands as a front.
A second later, I felt a pinching sensation at my neck.
And the next second, it was all darkness.
It was bright.
My eyes opened slowly, at their own pace. The ceiling was plain and white, and I would have believed it was my room if I hadn’t seen the medieval times furniture beside me. “Why, hello there, hamster.” I fell off the bed, screaming. “Shit, shit, shut up!” A hand was placed over my mouth, and I was dragged back to the bed. The masked demon made sure I had quieted down with threats of how he would smack me across my head before he removed his hand from my mouth. Only to be kicked off the bed.
I stumbled and ran across the room, taking a second to look at the clothes I was in. Shaking my head of the unnecessary thoughts, I had almost reached out to grab the doorknob when my leg was pulled back and I went tumbling to the ground. Luckily, I was careful enough not to fall on my face. I backed myself against the wall, as the demon came near me, “Oh, you shouldn’t have done that, Faye.” He growled lightly, reaching out to grab me. It happened within a split second. I spotted the pretty little lamp atop a little cabinet, and the next thing I knew, I had used it to hit the demon.
Hey, humans can make mistakes.
I bolted out the door. Not long after, I heard another pair of footsteps in my direction and unmistakable male laughter. I could feel the demon boy closing up on me, gaining on me, and it was scary. I could swear that I even felt his fingers skim the gown I had worn which I had no memory changing into. As I ran around, not knowing where I was going, mainly because there were so many hallways which lead to other hallways and so on, I spotted a woman talking to another woman before sending her off. I ran towards her at full speed, putting all the remaining energy into reaching her.
Holding her shoulder, I crouched down behind her. I heard loud and heavy footsteps – which no doubt belonged to the demon – come to a rest. And then the next word out of his mouth, made me want to spit up. “Mother.” I heard the demon boy grit out. Peeking from the woman’s shoulder, I noticed how his body had gone stiff. “Zylen.” The woman said, giving a little glance to me who was hiding behind her back, and then turning towards demon boy. “What is the meaning of this?” She said, and I dropped my hands from her shoulders, just as she stepped forward. “And what is with this mask?” The woman continued.
In a second, however, she managed to get the mask off.
Hot damn.
My mouth dropped open. Demon boy was drop dead gorgeous without the black fabric covering his face. I saw him look behind the lady who was also his mother and flashes a cocky smirk at my awe-struck face. “Come on, your father is waiting in his study.” She took the demon boy by the arms and then turned to look at me. “I suppose you can find your way back to your chambers.” She said. “Yeah, um, yes,” I said and she nodded, walking off with his son.
I didn’t miss the way demon boy turned back to see me, and I certainly didn’t miss the way his eyes twinkled as if they were giving me an indirect message tell that this isn’t over. But as I began walking back to the room, I realized that I was in a bigger problem than demon boy chasing me and it was how I was going to figure the way back to the room.
“Oh, crap.
