Chapter 623
"Let me explain."
The security guard started, "We noticed someone lurking around the Bentley for quite a while... So we detained him to ask if you knew him. If not, should we call the cops?" Sophia was unsure of what to do, so she looked back at Gilbert, who had already stood up and approached.
"Mr. Johnson, what do you think?"
"I'll handle it."
"Sure."
Gilbert turned to the guards, "Could you guys show me his picture, if you have one?"
"We do."
One of the guards took out his phone, scrolled for a bit, and handed it over to Gilbert. "Take a look, do you recognize him?"
Gilbert took the phone, saw a completely unfamiliar face, and forwarded the picture to his own phone.
He handed the phone back to the guard, "Thanks for your effort, but I don't know this man. Let him go."
"Let him go?"
"Yes."
Gilbert nodded, clearly indicating that if the guards had approached them, the car must be fine.
Otherwise, they would have headed straight to the police station.
"Well, alright then."
The guards were puzzled but since the car owner wasn't pressing charges, they didn't press further. "Sorry for the inconvenience." "Take care."
After the guards left, Gilbert went back to the dining table.
The apartment wasn't big, so Sherilyn had overheard the conversation.
She felt uneasy about not pursuing it further, "Just let him go? No need to involve the police?"
Especially since he had been attacked with a machete not long ago.
"Calling the police won't do any good."
Gilbert smirked slightly, a hint of amusement in his eyes, "He didn't actually do anything, and he wouldn't say anything to the police anyway." So, they had no choice but to let him go.
His laid-back attitude made Sherilyn question, "Aren't you worried?"
Gilbert paused, then nodded, "Yeah, I'm worried. But worrying doesn't solve anything, life goes on."
He looked down at Jenna, who was enjoying her meal, his eyes softening.
"Jenna, is it good?"
"Super good!"
Sherilyn shook her head, deciding not to pry further. He knew what he was doing with his own matters. "Oh, right."
Gilbert suddenly pointed towards the window, "Last night, what were you doing by the window?" Sherilyn was startled, realizing he had indeed come by last night, and she hadn't been mistaken.
Before she could explain, Gilbert noticed the decorative stickers on
the window glass and chuckled
you were putting up decorations. Nice, they look good."
He then added, "The holidays are coming up, got any plans?"
"So,
Any plans? Sherilyn wasn't quite sure what he meant and looked at Jenna, replying, "Nothing special, just spending time with Jenna." That's how it had always been.
This year, they had Sophia too. Since Sophia's daughter couldn't make it back from abroad, they would at least have some company. "Sir." Jenna tugged at Gilbert's sleeve, "Will you stay with Jenna too?"
Her innocent question came without any hesitation.
"Jenna." Sherilyn frowned, shaking
her head at her daughter, "That's not appropriate. It's a time for family reunions, and Gilbert has hisown
family to return to."
"Oh..." Jenna nodded but pouted.
How could Gilbert stand seeing his daughter upset? Besides, he'd rather spend those moments with them anyway.
"How about this, Jenna, I'll come
over a bit later that day to spend
time with you. If you're still up,
we
can stay up late and set off fireworks, how's that?"
Sherilyn's eyes widened, about to object. "No..."
"Yay, yay!"
But Jenna, already thrilled, clapped her hands, "Sir, you have to keep your promise."
"Of course." Gilbert softly patted her head, "If I promise you, I'll never break it."
"Pinky promise!" Jenna, beaming, held out her little finger.
