Chapter 10
JASMINE
We both jumped up at the sound of banging against the panic room door.
“Sh it.” I said.
Interrupted, yet again..
Hurriedly, we threw our clothes on..
“Who is it?” Theodore asked, as he buttoned up his shirt.
“It’s Sherry,” the voice said from the other side of the door. “All clear.”
Theodore looked over at me. I tried to hide my disappointment but was clearly horribly failing at
it.
His face resumed its usual formal stance.
When the door swung open, Sherry was on the other side. She looked worried.
“We didn’t catch them,” she said. “But they rummaged through some of the rooms.”
“Which rooms?” Theodore asked.
“Your office,” Sherry explained. “And Jasmine’s bedroom.”
My bedroom? What on Earth would anyone be looking for in my bedroom?
“Why would an intruder be looking through my bedroom?” I asked.
“I haven’t got the faintest idea,” replied Sherry.
Upstairs, my bedroom was in disarray. Whoever they were, their search was thorough. There wasn’t a single drawer left that hadn’t been emptied out onto the floor. All my books had been sifted through as well.
“Don’t worry.” Theodore placed his hand on my shoulder reassuringly, “we’ll figure out who did this.”
“Do you think I’m in danger?” I asked.
“Maybe,” he replied. “But m

My heart eased every so slightly.
When Theodore left, however, my head was filled with dread.
Who was the mysterious intruder?
And what did they want with me?
Would they come back?
Could Theodore protect me if they did?
The warm water trickled down my b*dy. I could feel my muscles case with every drop of water.
Last night, I had several nightmares about the break-in. I barely slept a wink.
All of a sudden, I felt like someone was watching me from inside the bedroom. I always felt like someone was watching me when I was in the shower. Probably because of a horror movie I watched several years ago.
Switching the water off, I stepped out of the shower.
As I reached for the towel, I noticed him in the other room.
“Theodore?”
“Jasmine,” he said, his eyes lingering on my wet b*dy.
Quickly, I covered my b*dy with the towel, squeezing the water out of my damp hair.
“Do you need something?”
“Ah, yes,” he
d out of it. “Could you meet me in my office when you’re ready?”
“Of course,” I nodded. “Just give me ten.”
He left, taking one last look at me before shutting the door behind him.
Once I was dressed, I rushed downstairs.
Things were different.
I noticed significantly more guards around the house. As I rounded every corner, there was another one. Theodore was evidently taking the break in seriously. When I passed the front entrance, I spotted security cameras.
-I knocked on Theodore’s office door.
“Come in,” he said.

His eyes lit up when he saw me.
“Shut the door behind you,” he instructed.
I sat down, tucking my hands underneath me.
“Any news about the intruder?” I asked.

“Nothing yet,” he answered. “We still don’t know who did it. But we did increase security around the house.”
“Yeah,” I said. “I noticed that there are more guards and cameras on my way down here.”
“I’m not sure what the intruder’s motives were,” he explained. “But rest assured, I will do anything in my power to figure it out. It won’t ever happen again.”
There was a seriousness in his eyes, an intensity I would never mess with. If the intruder could see him now, they would never dare set foot on the premises.
“Now for the second matter at hand,” he said.
“The second?”
“Yes.”
He stood up and started pacing in front of his bookshelf. I watched him go back and forth, deep in thought.
“It’s clear to me now how much you mean to my daughter,” he started. “You clearly understand Thea better than I do.”
He walked up to me, leaning on the desk.
“I don’t usually do this, Jasmine,” he said, “but I am asking for your help. I need you to help me get to know my daughter better. I want to be a good father. And with you helping me, I really think that I could be.”
My heart lit up. I could have never guessed how happy those words would make me feel.
“I have a proposition,” he carried on. “That manual of yours is full of brilliant ideas. But I’m more of an you should

“Like a teacher?”
“Yes,” he smiled. “Just like a teacher. We will, however, have to set some rules. Our-um-rendezvous can only happen at night. During the day, we must go on like nothing is happening. So long as the sun is up, we cannot touch or show affection.”

“You want to keep me a secret?”
“For now,” he touched my face. “Clearly, there has been a security breach, someone from the inside. I can’t appear weak.”
“I make you weak?”
“You distract me,” he said as he eyed me up and down. “And can you really blame me?”
“And what are we going to do during those lessons?”
“Whatever we want,” he said as he took a step closer.
