Chapter 400 Unscrupulous People
"If there are no other symptoms, you don't need to worry. But if the cough worsens, we might need a nebulizer," said the doctor. "Okay, I got it. I'm really sorry to trouble you, doctor."
"No problem. Take care."
After the doctor left the ward, Mrs. Larson sat by the bedside and asked softly, "Madam, do you feel uncomfortable elsewhere?"
Josephine pointed to her neck. "Here."
She let out another cough and felt her throat hurt. She also had some difficulties in breathing, but she didn't know how to express herself. She only knew that she felt uncomfortable there.
Mrs. Larson said, "You're injured there, but it will get better soon."
Josephine looked at Mrs. Larson with concern and asked cautiously, "Will I be alright?"
"Of course, you're still young. Everything will be alright, so don't worry too much. Follow the doctor's advice, and you'll get discharged soon."
Hearing Mrs. Larson's words, Josephine felt somewhat more at ease.
She held Mrs. Larson's hand and asked, "Why didn't my parents visit me? Did they abandon me?"
Not knowing how to respond, Mrs. Larson hesitated briefly. Since she didn't know much about Josephine's situation, she could only repeat what Lewis had told her earlier. She informed Josephine her parents were on a business trip.
"Do they know that I'm sick?"
"They probably don't know. If they knew, they would definitely come to visit you."
Josephine finally felt more at ease.
Mrs. Larson continued, "So you should take good care of yourself and listen to the doctor's advice. We don't want your parents to be worried while they are so far away."
Josephine nodded and responded softly, "I will listen to the doctor and take good care of myself. I won't let Mom and Dad worry."
"That's right. Now, get some rest. It will be morning soon."
Mrs. Larson assisted her in lying back on the bed and tucked her in.
Josephine rested her head on her hands, her eyes fixed on the door of the ward. She couldn't fall asleep at all.
She displayed exceptional cooperation with the doctor to facilitate an early discharge. Upon waking in the morning, her first action was to undergo an IV drip, resulting in a tearful reaction as the needle punctured her skin.
She instinctively looked to her side, wanting to seek comfort from her mother, but no familiar face was by her side.
Looking at the unfamiliar hospital room, she silently held back her tears.
Lewis didn't visit her recently either, as he was busy.
The news of Robert's death was made public, but it didn't cause much commotion on the internet. After all, it wasn't something worth gossiping about. The matter gradually subsided within a couple of days. However, the stock market experienced turmoil. Alvarez Corp's stocks had been plunging for several consecutive days.
Lewis checked Robert's assets, deposits, and all the real estate he owned. It amounted to nearly 200 billion.
As Robert's wife, Nancy had a 50 percent inheritance right. The remaining 50 percent naturally went to Lewis.
However, a group of unscrupulous individuals emerged straight after the inheritance was brought up. Almost everyone related to the Alvarez family wanted a share of the pie.
Aside from the main building, which was ravaged by fire, the rooms within the mansion remained intact.
Consequently, the Alvarez mansion had become a bustling hub in recent days, with numerous relatives flocking in. While they professed to be present to offer condolences, Lewis knew what they were truly
after.
A billion dollars would be enough for them to live comfortably for the rest of their lives. Who wouldn't be tempted?
Kiran, with his arm still in a cast, was also discharged. Despite his injured hand, he still exuded a resolute bearing.
He showed up in the name of the company's president.
In the receiving room, people wailed and cried, putting on a façade of exaggerated grief that surpassed what they would display if their own father had died.
Contrary to the others, Lewis stood by in black, observing the people with cold eyes. He seemed like an outsider.
Besides Lewis, Seth was there too.
He and Daphne had yet to divorce. Hence, he was still the Alvarez family's son-in-law. However, unlike Lewis, Seth knew how to maintain a good façade.
He busied himself by helping Nancy, receiving guests, and expressing gratitude for their condolences on her behalf.
It had been almost a week since Robert passed away, yet people continued to visit every day.
The weather hung gloomily overhead, and a somber atmosphere reverberated throughout the mansion. Though subtle, the air was heavy with an unmistakable sorrow, as if it had infused every nook and cranny.
Whenever someone arrived to offer condolences, Lewis would shake their hands in greeting. While some individuals tried to console him, he always appeared uninterested in talking.
In the eyes of onlookers, he appeared tormented, unwilling to engage in conversation.
Nancy approached him and whispered, "Have all the expected visitors arrived? The funeral is scheduled for tomorrow. I wonder if these people will cause trouble."
While speaking, her gaze fell on those pretentious people in the hall.
Robert had three elder sisters, and they all came with their families.
There were also other women who came with their sons and daughters, claiming that their kids were Robert's children. Nancy was upset initially, but after seeing such a scene, she thought Robert deserved to die.
Although she didn't know whether these people were telling the truth, with so many of them visiting, she thought there must be some truth underlying their claims.
Nancy couldn't believe Robert had had so many affairs outside their marriage. Merely casting her eyes upon those individuals filled her with a boiling rage.
Lewis swept his gaze over them and quickly looked away before saying calmly, "When he was alive, they couldn't cause any ripples. What can they do now that he's dead?"
"That's true, but it's as if they had planned it together. They all showed up here together. I'm a bit worried."
Lewis snorted at that. Later, he caught a glimpse of Kiran sitting there, watching the drama.
Nancy noticed him too. "Don't tell me he's also here to claim a share."
Two hundred billion is not a small sum. Even Lewis hadn't expected Robert to be so wealthy.
Nancy asked, "You said earlier that I could get half of it, right? Is that certain?"
"Yes, it's for certain."
"That's great," Nancy responded, secretly relieved.
Lewis spoke leisurely, "And you also have the right to get a share of the remaining half."
Nancy's eyes lit up. "Really?"
Lewis couldn't be bothered to engage in a conversation with her. "It's getting dark. You stay here. I'm going out for a bit."
"Are you going back to the hospital again? There are too many people here. I can't handle them all!" Nancy hurriedly held him back.
Lewis glanced at her and said coldly, "If you can't handle them, then what's the point of inheriting the estate?"
"You ..."
He brushed off Nancy's hand and walked out.
Conrad saw him and immediately opened the door of the Bentley. "Chairman Alvarez."
Lewis got into the car and asked, "How's the situation at the hospital?"
"Nothing much. Miss Woods was rescued yesterday, but she hasn't woken up yet. As for Mrs. Alvarez, Mrs. Larson said she has been compliant and cooperative with the doctors. She didn't cause any trouble." "Oh, and there's something at the company that needs your attention."
"Isn't Kiran already discharged? Let him handle it." Lewis leaned back, closing his eyes with a hint of weariness.
Holding a stack of documents, Sophia sat outside Josephine's ward. Obviously, she was waiting for Lewis.
Upon seeing Lewis' arrival, she approached him. "Chairman Alvarez, here are some urgent documents. Could you please sign them?"
Lewis casually took the documents and flipped through them before pulling a pen from his pocket and signing them.
There were seven to eight pieces of paperwork. Lewis glanced over them briefly. He then pretended to ask casually, "Miss King, do you have any siblings?"
Slightly stunned, Sophia instinctively glanced at Lewis.
He kept his head lowered and continued signing the documents, leading her to believe he was simply making a casual inquiry. However, when he finished signing the documents and looked up at her, it seemed as though he was waiting for her response.
