What Separates Me and You

Chapter 381 Keeping It Low

Sophia entered the office and headed straight for the sitting room. As expected, she saw Josephine. She glanced at her phone, which displayed the photos the others had taken of Lewis and Josephine when they arrived at the company.

In the photos, Lewis was in a suit while Josephine wore a white turtleneck sweater with her hair styled into a bun. She was sucking away on a lollipop. She looked adorable with her bulging cheeks and brilliant eyes.

The man beside her looked steadily forward as he held her hand, strutting in with no intentions of keeping their presence discreet. In fact, they looked compatible with each other in the photos.

What was Lewis trying to do? Was he going to announce Josephine's identity?

Sophia frowned. She came to the sitting room and stood before Josephine, sizing her up.

Josephine seemed unaware of her presence though she had been there for some time. She continued savoring the snacks, oblivious to her surroundings.

It took Josephine a while before she noticed Sophia. Looking up, she met Sophia's probing gaze.

Sophia smiled and said, "It's been long since you last came to work."

Josephine munched on the biscuit in her mouth, puzzled as she looked at the woman in front of her. She neither understood what she said nor recognized her.

Besides, afraid that Sophia would snatch her snacks, she stealthily gathered the snacks toward herself.

Sophia found it weird. "What's wrong? Do you not recognize me anymore?"

Josephine shook her head to tell her she didn't recognize her.

A look of doubt flitted across Sophia's mind, but she kept her smile on her face. "Then did Chairman Alvarez assign you any tasks?" Josephine couldn't understand her and wasn't planning to anyway. She continued rummaging through the snacks on the coffee table.

Sophia would've been unbefitting of her role as an assistant if she hadn't caught on to Josephine's peculiarity. She smiled as she watched Josephine ignore her and turned to leave.

At that moment, the company's group chat was in chaos. Everyone was discussing Josephine. Some recognized her as an ex-staff of the company and even exposed her information. Rumors flew about how she managed to get the job here because Conrad pulled some strings for her. They even said that she used to have an affair with Mr. Hall before hooking up with the chairman. The rumors got even more outrageous by the second.

Finally, Josephine became a skilled, scheming woman who strived for great heights in the rumors.

"Is this true, Miss King?" Sophia's colleague approached her and asked. After all, only Sophia and Conrad would know better about this.

Sophia stopped typing on the keyboard as she glanced at her colleague. "Is what true?"

"This. Aren't you in the group chat?" Her colleague showed Sophia her handphone.

Sophia casually glanced at it before continuing her work. "Have you finished your work? If so, I can assign you some new tasks."

Her colleague's lips curved unnaturally. Then, she kept her phone and returned to work.

When Sophia first started working, she received notice that she would be posted at the director's office-just as Seth had expected. And Lewis did, in fact, promote her and increase her salary.

Now, Sophia vaguely sensed that Lewis was up to something big by how openly he arrived at the company with Josephine.

She sent the photos to Seth, who was in a meeting when he received them. He pulled out his phone with swagger in the middle of the meeting, and, of course, no one dared criticize him. Besides Lewis, he held the highest post here. Who would dare condemn him if Lewis didn't?

Seth's smile faded when he saw the photos. He looked up at Lewis, who was sitting calmly in his seat and listening insouciantly to the topic of discussion.

Seth wasn't in a rush to leave after the meeting ended. He called out to Lewis only after the others had dispersed. "One minute, please, Chairman Alvarez." Lewis paused and looked at him. "Anything, Mr. Fairchild?"

Seth stood and smiled. "I see the staff fervently discussing the woman who came with you today in the company's group chat. Don't you think you should keep it low?"

"What should I do then, Mr. Fairchild?"

"Don't forget she's still Quintin's wife. If word of this spreads, the few of you will be in trouble."

Lewis' lips curved into a smile as he stared meaningfully at Seth. Lewis replied slowly, "I knew you were excellent in your job, but I didn't know you'd show such keen interest in someone else's personal affairs. What a great talent gone to waste."

Seth laughed. He decided to stop beating about the bush. "What on earth have you done exactly?"

Lewis would never dare to be so conspicuous in his behavior before this, yet now he seemed to have nothing to fear. Therefore, Seth was curious to know what Lewis had done—or what he was scheming. Lewis said, "Being the exceptionally smart person you are, Mr. Fairchild, why don't you take a guess?"

Seth's brow twitched. His mind ran through the recent happenings, and he realized there was really only Daphne's hearing that Lewis could've utilized.

He stared at the indiscernible curve on Lewis' lips. He seemed to have learned something yet nothing at all at the same time.

Lewis didn't reveal much. He left with Seth looking baffled behind him.

It didn't matter even if others discovered what was inevitable.

Lewis returned to his office and saw that Josephine had devoured half of the snacks in the box. He swiftly walked over and frowned at the empty bags on the table.

Josephine looked up at him and even enthusiastically handed him the bag of snacks she held.

Without saying anything, he picked up the box and kept the remaining snacks.

Josephine couldn't read his actions until he put the box on top of the bookcase, well beyond her reach.

She tilted her head upward, staring at the box in a daze. Several moments later, she stiffly turned toward Lewis, looking at him accusingly.

He said, "That's for tomorrow."

The corners of Josephine's lips drooped, and she looked ready to cry.

Lewis stroked her hair and said in a low voice, "It's okay. I'll take you out for a meal in a while."

Coaxing Josephine now had become a breeze. Getting her delicious food was all he had to do.

His words cured Josephine's sadness instantly. She replied rapidly with a nod.

Josephine was bored out of her mind when Lewis was busy with work. She would wander about the office, touching everything she could lay her fingers on and leaning against the large window to look out of it Conrad would have the illusion that Lewis had brought his child to work whenever he entered.

After Josephine finished entertaining herself by the window, she came to Lewis' desk and watched him work. She stuck her bottom upward as she leaned on the desk.

Lewis glanced at her. Meeting her dissatisfied gaze, he hurled the tablet beside him to her for her to watch videos on it.

Holding the tablet, the video on it attracted her attention instantly.

After watching several videos, she stumbled across one that taught viewers how to make a paper plane. Her eyes lit up even as she simply took a document from the table and tore a page off it to make a paper plane.

Upon hearing the sound of paper tearing, Lewis' head jerked up, and he saw the word agreement on the paper in her hand!

His lip unnaturally twitched as he sprung to his feet to snatch the document from which Josephine had torn a page. It was a newly signed agreement.

Immersed in the delight of folding the paper plane, Josephine was utterly oblivious to Lewis' glowering face.

He rubbed his temple and called Conrad to enter.

Conrad rushed in. "Sir."

Lewis handed the incomplete agreement to Conrad. "Settle it."

Conrad's mouth fell ajar. "This ..."

Noticing the paper in Josephine's hand, realization dawned on him.

However, Josephine's attempt to make the paper plane failed. Pouting, she picked up another document.

Conrad was speechless.
