Chapter 11
After a while, Lewis retracted his arm without looking at Josephine.
He turned to Sierra and said softly, "I'll send you back to the hospital."
"But..." Sierra wasn't satisfied, but when she met Lewis' icy gaze, she swallowed the words on the tip of her tongue.
At this moment, he was like a marshmallow sprinkled with blades. He was soft and gentle on the outside, but taking a bite would cause bloodshed, so Sierra didn't dare to act up. "My ankle hurts. Carry me," she said.
Lewis leaned over and picked her up in front of Josephine. Sierra put her arms around his neck and gave Josephine a provocative look.
It was as if she was saying, "See, you mean nothing in his eyes."
With Sierra in his arms, he walked past Josephine and left without looking back, his swift movement lifting the stray hairs around Josephine's ears.
Josephine lowered her gaze, and her suspended hands slowly fell.
The moment Lewis left, the stagnant air in the room dissipated. It was only then that Fred hurried over to help her up.
"Josephine, are you okay?"
The woman remained silent for a while before lifting her head. She smiled faintly and shook her head at Fred to indicate that she was fine.
A hint of sympathy flashed across his eyes. How could she be okay when the person she loved treated another woman so tenderly while not even sparing a glance at her?
"Lewis is a fool! Don't be sad."
The whole world could see how much Josephine loved Lewis. Only he couldn't see it and treated her like a family member while pampering another woman in front of her.
What else could he be if not a fool?
"Tyler, take me to the hospital. I'm about to bleed out," joked Avery, trying to lighten the mood.
Her brother glared at her impatiently. "Did you just realize that? That's what you get for being so impulsive!"
Avery rolled her eyes and turned to Josephine. "Josie, come and help me. Ah...I can't walk anymore."
Hearing that, Josephine rushed over to support Avery's arm. She felt guilty as she looked at her. Avery rested her head on Josephine's shoulder, not giving her a chance to apologize. "Hurry up. Let's go! Don't die on top of Josephine!" Fred chimed in.
"Fuck you! I'm not even close to dying yet" Avery flung a kick at him.
Dodging, Fred teased, "Wow! You're acting more like a man each day. Who's going to marry you like this?"
"That's none of your fucking business!"
The atmosphere suddenly became lively. Everyone was trying to uphold Josephine's dignity, while only Lewis allowed others to trample on her repeatedly.
Hearing the two of them bickering, Josephine lowered her head and tried to hold back her tears, not wanting to ruin the pleasant atmosphere.
"Alright, let's go to the hospital first. You're still making a fuss even though you're injured," Tyler stopped the two from fighting.
As he spoke, he cast another glance at Josephine, feeling quite sorry for her.
But he didn't say anything and helped his sister walk out with his hand on her shoulder.
Josephine followed them to the hospital.
She and Tyler waited outside for Avery's examination. But due to her fever, Josephine felt dizzy and cold. She stood there shivering.
Tyler noticed her discomfort and asked, "Are you okay?"
Josephine looked up and tried to muster a smile, shaking her head to indicate that she was fine.
Without a word, he took off his coat and draped it over her shoulders.
Josephine stiffened, and her eyes widened as she looked at him with a hint of fear in her eyes.
Seeing that she was about to take it off, he said, "I noticed that you were feeling cold. Keep it on. You can just return it to me when we leave."
Josephine pursed her lips in contemplation. Tyler didn't know sign language, so there was no way he could converse with her.
Just then, Avery walked out of the CT room, and both of them turned to look at her simultaneously.
"What did the doctor say?" Tyler asked.
Avery had a hand on her head. She rolled her eyes and answered, "The results aren't out yet, but it shouldn't be a big deal."
"Just because you say it's not a big deal doesn't mean it's not a big deal. Your head is not something you can just hit casually. You'd better think about how to explain this to Dad," he scolded. Startled, Avery quickly grabbed Tyler's arm and voiced, "Don't tell Dad, please! I beg you, Tyler! I'm not that stupid. It was just a beer bottle. I'm not dumb enough to hit myself with a whiskey bottle." While the two were talking, Josephine suddenly slumped over and fell to the ground
