Chapter 33 What Did She Do
It was 4am in the morning, outside, the wind was blowing and snow was falling, it was so freezing that even the street animals looked for a warm place to hide.
But no matter how cold it was outside, Isobel felt that her heart was even colder.
Everyone thought that she was dating Hamish for his money, even her mother did.
The 300 thousand meant nothing to her right now, but it was exactly those 300 thousand that diminished her pride that she used to carry with her.
She couldn't even remember how many times she had to ask Hamish for money to give to Amanda.
Everytime Amanda told Isobel that she would quit gambling, again and again, she would cry to her and swear that she would quit. But whenever she sat back at that table, she forgot who Isobel was to her. Isobel didn't even know what she was expecting from this kind of a mother.
City N was so big, but it had no home for her.
When she was back in her apartment, Isobel noticed that she was burning up, so she measured her temperature, and found that she was having a fever.
There was nothing in her apartment, except for some vitamins. She couldn't find anything else.
This flu hit her really hard, and knocked her out.
Just as Isobel finished taking her temperature, which was 39.8C, she got a phone call from Stanley.
After hanging up the phone, she changed her clothes and left the apartment.
When Isobel got off the taxi, she ran into Hamish and Freddie.
As Freddie saw her, he said surprised, "Isobel, it's been a while!"
Isobel laughed, "Long time."
While talking, she walked towards the door.
"Stanley."
She mentioned Stanley's name, and was led inside by a clerk.
Not a single time did she lay her eyes on Hamish.
Freddie said, "I think Isobel didn't even look at you."
As he finished speaking, he saw that Hamish turned to look at him, his gaze was so cold that Freddie had it run down cold his back.
"I'm just saying the truth."
Hamish snorted, and watched Isobel walk away, his expression was obscure.
Freddie tilted his head to look at him, and remembered what Isobel just said, "If I am not mistaken, she is here to meet Stanley? What is she meeting with him for?" Hamish didn't respond, only his eyes darkened more.
Isobel exited the elevator, and was quickly taken to Stanley.
"Mister Shaw."
She greeted the man on the couch, and when Stanley heard her voice, he looked up to see her, "What a pleasure, Isobel."
Isobel pressed her lips together, and sat down on the side.
Stanley poured two glasses of wine, and handed one to her.
Isobel took the glass, but did not drink it.
Stanley leaned back, and looked at her with a fake smile, "What, are you afraid I added something?"
Isobel shook her head, "I got a cold, I can't drink alcohol."
"You got a cold? Let me see!"
He said, and leaned towards her.
Isobel drew back subconsciously, but he took her hand and pulled her over.
"Mister Shaw, I am here to talk about something serious."
Stanley touched her forehead, and asked, "You are not only sick, you have a fever, have you seen a doctor?"
"No. Mister Shaw, I am here to..."
"Is it about your mother?"
Stanley took a sip of wine, and squinted, "That is not my fault, there is someone trying to trouble her, and I can tell you who it is."
"Who?" Isobel looked at him, even though her fever was making her dizzy, she heard the name clearly, Hamish.
Stanley was not surprised when he saw the expression on her face, and raised his brows, "You guessed it?"
Isobel nodded, "I know it is him, I am not here to find out who has been playing these games."
"Playing games?" Stanley suddenly laughed, "Isobel, I feel you don't know that the reason your mother has come so far is because of your lover?" Isobel knitted her brows, she didn't understand, "What do you mean by that?"
"Isobel, you are so smart, don't you think it's curious that your mother used to be so normal? How come she suddenly got into gambling?"
That was not possible, Hamish looked like someone who didn't like to fuss over things, but he actually haggled over every penny.
"Do you think this is because of you? Alright then, just because I like you, so I have put a lot of energy to find this out for you, take a look at this."
As he was speaking, Stanley took a file from the couch, and threw it on the table in front of her.
Isobel looked at the file, for some reason, she didn't dare to open it.
"You don't dare to look? Even if, you still need to, it has been three years, hasn't it? You have been played by Hamish all this time!"
She closed her eyes, and reached out for the file.
There weren't a lot of documents inside, only three pages, and Isobel finished reading within minutes.
When she finished, she was trembling all over, "This is not possible..."
"You already broke up with him, why would I lie to you now?"
Stanley looked at her, the wrinkles on the corner of his eyes were making him look evil when he was smiling.
"To be fair, your parents were victims in the car accidents years ago, even though it was cause by your father's drunk driving."
Isobel looked at the documents in
front of her with disbelief in her eyes, on it was written in clear words the reason for the accident all those. years ago. The cause was his father drunk driving, and crashing into another car. The two passengers in the back of the car died right then.
Her mother was lucky that she only lost a leg, but everything else was fine.
Her father wasn't as lucky, he was paralyzed.
When the accident happened, she was only thirteen years old, she knew nothing, all she knew was that her parents were in an accident, and were admitted to the hospital. Later the judges ruled for them to pay a huge amount of money, which caused them to live like stumdogs.
She had no idea, that the two victims were Hamish's parents. When she thought of that, Isobel felt as if a huge rock hit her.

But this was still not the most startling information, "Your mom started her gambling addiction five years ago right? If I am not mistaken, it was the year whene Hamish graduated from college. Didn't he then meet you and asked you to be his mistress?"
When he said that, Stanley lit a cigarette, "I had asked you to be with me, but you didn't want to listen, you had to choose him. Now you got the mess, everything is lost." "But, what have I done wrong?"
What did she do wrong? It was her father who caused the accident, and her father paid for it. He didn't die, but he was paralyzed for so many years.
And it was an accident that nobody wished to happen.
So, from the beginning, Isobel was only a tool for Hamish to get his revenge?
"Oh by the way, there is something else, but I am not sure if you can take it. Should I tell you?"
Isobel raised her head to look at him, her usually limpid eyes were now empty, "What is it?"☐☐☐☐☐☐☐
