Chapter Warming 37

Chapter 37

Everyone sat down for dinner, save for Spencer’s brother, Seth Layton. He was attending to something abroad and had yet to return.

During the meal, Lucille understood why Spencer’s table manners were so impeccable. It wasn’t just because he’d been well–trained since childhood–it was also because of the environment he’d grown up in.

James, Eric, and Lila were quite satisfied with Lucille. She wasn’t ingratiating or arrogant, and she was elegant and classy. She met the Layton family’s standards for its members.

Even though Lucille hailed from a greedy and materialistic family like the Johnsons, she remained

steadfast in her beliefs and wasn’t afraid to take the path less traveled.

These things only made James, Eric, and Lila like her more.

After dinner, Lila kept Lucille by her side and chatted with her. She told Lucille everything about Spencer, starting from his childhood up until adulthood.

Thanks to Lila, Lucille learned that Spencer had been warm and cheery before the age of ten.

But because he was the oldest grandchild of the Layton family and had to bear its weight on his shoulders, he’d had to turn himself into someone cold and aloof. His heart remained warm underneath

the ice, though.

Lucille could understand that. None of the descendants of affluent families led relaxing lives. A relatively small family like the Johnsons could do whatever it took to reap benefits for themselves, let alone a family like the Laytons, which had many branches.

Spencer didn’t know what Lila and Lucille were talking about. All he knew was that his mother was hoarding his wife to herself, and he wasn’t very happy about it.

He was absent–minded as he listened to James and Eric chat and only responded occasionally.

James and Eric found this a rare sight–Spencer was jealous, and Lila was the target of his jealousy. It

was such an interesting phenomenon.

James said meaningfully, “It looks like Lucille’s the right one.”

“I think so, too,” Eric said.

Spencer narrowed his eyes without saying anything. Eric asked him, “When do you intend to have a wedding?”

Spencer thought about it before saying, “Not so soon. I already have a plan.”

Eric was pleased to see that Spencer knew how to think of others now. The latter was perfect in every sense, aside from the fact that he forced himself to act too seriously.

He said, “Alright, then. Do as you see fit, but let us know if you need any help.”

“Thanks, Dad.” Spencer had plans for the wedding, but this was not the right time.

James wasn’t in any hurry anymore. He nodded approvingly and said, “You and Lucy might’ve already registered your marriage, but you can’t skip out on the wedding and make her miss out on this experience of a lifetime. Make the necessary preparations and come to us if you need anything.”

James and Eric knew very well that they didn’t need to worry about Spencer, not when they knew what he was capable of.

But they’d still offered assistance because this was about the Layton family’s oldest grandchild’s wedding. There couldn’t be anything sloppy about it.

Meanwhile, Lila spoke to Lucille about the same thing, but Lucille’s situation was different–she’d never even thought about having a wedding, so she couldn’t answer Lila.

Lila looked at Lucille’s hand, sounding displeased as she said, “I can’t believe the brát didn’t even buy a ring for you.”

Lucille looked at her ringless hand and explained, “It’s not like that, Mom. We got together so suddenly that he didn’t have time. There’s no rush, though.”

In truth, she still felt the whole matter was rather surreal. That was why she hadn’t had much hope for a wedding or a ring. Spencer treated her well, and she could sense the warmth he gave her, but…

Lila observed Lucille surreptitiously. It looked like Spencer still had some work to do. She wanted to tell Spencer that it didn’t mean anything if he and Lucille had only registered their marriage.

She decided to lend him a hand. “Did the brat tell you that your mother and I knew each other, Lucy?”
