Wand: A Fantasy of Witches, Wizards, and Wands

Chapter Chapter Eighteen

Bordering Lake Champlain’s western edge was the abandoned Plattsburg Air Force base. Here the sorcerer found his solitude. During the Purge back in 1980, when the Department had forced and mesmerized the majority of buffers and their communities from the Adirondack State Park, this base had been the site of a terrible battle. The sorcerer turned his head to glance at the burial mounds of those buffers and practitioners who had lost their lives in the melee. Memorial flags had been installed to honor both parties.

Tattered remnants, faded and torn, epitomized the forgotten dead.

Long cracks filled with weeds and grass ran the length of the runway, where he settled down to begin. The ceremonial fire was soon roaring. The censer, filled with essence of mugwort, was situated on a grate over the blaze to induce the appropriate atmosphere.

With eyes closed, mind wide-open and body in the proper yogic position, the sorcerer soon entered his memory cortex.

Darkness pervaded. An occasional joyous blip of light was all that guided him down his own gloomy corridors of reminiscence. He’d constructed, consecrated, and hidden his five traveling mirrors thirteen years ago, back when the warlocks were preoccupied with exterminating the vampire virus, so the memories of their locations were buried beneath years of fresher memories. Not to mention the charm he’d placed on the knowledge of their locations, as a safeguard against psychic intrusion.

Access to each memory was gained through a doorway.

There were many doorways to choose from, and the sorcerer did not have much time. He realized this as he trod down long unvisited corridors with the sound of footsteps behind.

When he opened his eyes twenty minutes later, it was to the sight of a lone runway in the night, rain drizzling onto his raincoat. The sorcerer was weak, hungry, and dreadfully tired. But he knew where he’d hidden the closest traveling mirror. His Plan, so long in the making, was finally about to be implemented.
