Vanishing Into The Elements

Chapter 8

“Wait. What do you mean?” I cried out, trying to move but couldn’t move due to my paralysis state.

“I mean she’s dead.” Robert spoke, coming over and picking me up.

How could she be dead? No, this isn’t real, it can’t be. Out of anger, I felt my emotions fly through the form of my element. I couldn’t take it anymore, all this death happening because of me. It might as well be me so no more lives are destroyed because of my lack of power control, anger issues, and that I have no family left.

Hearing a familiar voice, I turned my head and I couldn’t believe my eyes. Amanda was standing right before me, in all of her clothes and bandages hidden underneath from what the naked eye could possibly see. She looked like the girl warrior from the movie Thor. How could she be here after a few days of torture for me, but a perfect life for her?

“Amanda?” I called out, feeling tears fall from my eyes.

“How do you know my name, foul demon.” She spat out, unsheathing her sword in preparation.

“Amanda, it’s me. Why can’t you see me?” I cried, feeling more torn apart then I already was.

“I don’t know you, demon. Time for you to go back to Iolenium, foul creature.”

There were cheers erupting from the crowds as I was forced to fight my friend, the only one that I could truly connect with. Lowering my head, I gave up. Once I am gone, she will see what she had done. Or I could live with the guilt of killing my friend. Do I even have a choice?

I could stall her until dawn, which was only a few short hours away. But the question that comes into mind is how am I a demon? When I grew angry, did I turn into a demon? Whatever it was, I knew I was going to have to do something to stop the both of us from dying.

She began to charge and I jumped into the air and started to run. Soon, I was no longer controlling my powers, but instead my subconscious. Thinking about how this would end, I wanted to control it again. I felt like I was fight a losing fight. No matter where my subconscious took my body, Amanda was always there.

Then of course, she pinned me in the corner and was about to do a final blow when I finally had control. I let myself not be angry at what she did, since it was her job to protect those who just couldn’t do it themselves. Falling from the few feet in the air, I collapsed against the wall and started to breathe heavily, and she still didn’t seem to see me.

“Manda, please.” I begged, hoping that she would recognize me by my voice and her nickname.

She opened her eyes and saw me. She started to gasp, but raised her weapon in the air, as if I had done something wrong. What did I do? I lowered my head and waited for her to end me, I don’t plan on living if this is how she is going to think of me. She thrusted her sword and stopped it before my face.

“Stop! Don’t hurt her!” I heard the voice of Robert behind Amanda.

“Why should I not kill this demon? It has killed off many of the guards in the palace.” Amanda spoke, turning around from me.

“Because it’s Heather Moon, the prophesized Darkness elemental. I know this because I know the prophecy. Must I recite it?”

“No, I have heard it far more times then I care to count.”

“Believe me, I know you know Heather Moon.”

“I do, but she isn’t a darkness elemental because she is too good for it.”

“But the prophecy spoke of the darkness elemental that is not like the rest.”

Slowly, I started to stand up. The small amount of movement caused Amanda to turn around and pressed the blade closer to my neck. She walked away from the blade and lift it floating. It had become shorter breaths in order to not get cut by it.

“Give me three good reasons to not kill this demon.” Amanda spoke as she neared Robert.

“Well, she can’t control her powers. She also had travelled with me and a few others to this city in order to get her trained by the Elemental Leader Hector Hellbringer. Also, she had protected many of our newcomers through the test trials. Do you need anything else, because I can go on.”

“Hmph. It’s only 15 minutes till dawn, so we can see how she is until then. Demons can show their powers during the day too.”

The blade went back to her hand, and from there she sheathed it. I could tell that she wanted to kill me, assuming that I was a demon. Robert looked surprised as she walked past him and continued to do so. Soon, he was running up to me, his eyes worried and filled with fear.

“I’m fine, stop checking me for any wounds.” I spoke, but he ignored me.

“I wanted to make sure that you don’t die, like the other Darkness elements that had been killed while their powers were available strongly to them.” He smiled, checking my neck now.

“What about this prophecy that you were talking about?”

“Well, it’s about a Darkness elemental who’s not a killer and is unlike the rest of his or her kind. It tells that when he or she doesn’t have control, he or she turns into a demon like state. Which most Darkness elementals ever studied couldn’t do. You can check out the prophecy book once we are back to School of The Chosen Ones. The other school or for ones that are very distant in magic, which is called School of the Distant Children. Most of the guards come from there.” He breathed heavily after speaking, and I smiled.

“So do you think it refers to me?”

“Possibly, since you go into a demon like state when you have no control. You also don’t kill like the others, which they kill hundreds a night. You kill when you feel threatened or in anger. This is not a quality that most recorded Darkness elementals have.”

We stopped for a moment and looked out the alley way. There were a lot of guards, and once one set their sight on me, I looked in shock. Robert threw me behind him and created a wall of unextinguishable fire. His brown hair turned orange and stayed orange. It could’ve been the lighting of the fire, but I was certain it was because of the spell.

“Are you ok? Why are they still intent on you?”

“I don’t know, but I did kill a lot of the guards when night hit. I couldn’t control my power then since it was a strong force of power.” I spoke as a dark blade appeared in my hand.

He nodded and looked down at my hands, “How’d you get that blade?”

“I honestly don’t know. My subconscious controls a small amount of my power, I guess?”

“I would think so. Are you ready to fight till dawn hits?”

“Yeah, I am.”

The blade felt like I had used it for a long time. Robert lowered the fire wall and the guards started to run at us. As one charged at me, I couldn’t help but feel threatened. Soon, my perspective was a few feet in the air and started to attack the guard. After fighting him, even more started to charge at me. Come on, seriously.

I protected as Robert as much as I could, but he seemed like he could handle himself. There were a few stragglers left behind, and they started to run away for their lives. It was dawn, and I was forced out of my demon form. Robert caught me before I hurt myself even more. Sure, I had healed a small bit earlier, he couldn’t risk me being paralyzed again.

“Stop trying to get yourself paralyzed again.” He joked, and he started laughing.

“Ok, sir.” I spoke, giving a glare that should make lots of people run.

He put me on my feet and we walked side by side. There was smoke from earlier still about, and behind it was Amanda. She walked slowly and looked at me and then to Robert. So much has changed from this world to the old world I was once part of. Her outfit suited her for the role she seemed to play.

“Well, it’s dawn. It doesn’t seem like she is going to do anything wrong, for now.” She spoke, eyeing me down.

“Amanda, are you going to act like this? It’s already been a hard time these past two days. Even after all we’ve been through together.” I asked, disappointed in her change of attitude.

“Stop trying to act like you know me, demon. You are just acting like you know me when you don’t.”

“Amanda., stop trying to act like you are Cassie Goodrich. All I ever wanted was to get back to you, and when I do find you, you are acting like a complete jerk. I am sorry about the accident, but I went and saved your life, taking you to the hospital and everything.” I was growing in anger, but I knew that nothing was going to happen.

“Still acting like you know me, Heather...” She spoke and pulled her blade up to my neck, whilst mine was still in my hand.

Robert watched us, a complete opposite yet similar set, fight and quarrel. My blade started to float and it went to the back of her neck. She breathed in heavily, but was now intent on killing me. She was close enough to kill me in a swipe, but I took off. Robert saw that I did and set up two walls of fire, stopping incoming guards and a persistent Amanda.

“What is with everyone trying to kill me?” I breathed out heavily, taking a breather.

“I don’t know, but it can’t possibly be good. We need to get back to the school. Jacob will know what to do.”

“What about Kaitlyn?” I asked, looking up at him.

“Panama can easily get her and get back, along with Amber, of course. Don’t worry, they are the best at retrieving fallen heroes and warriors. Come on, we need to alert everyone to head back.”

“Will Panama and Amber know what to do?”

“Of course. They’ve been trained to know what everyone else is doing and retrieving bodies. Come onto my phoenix ride.”

There really was a phoenix, and it looked like the sun. It had black, beady eyes with golden beak and talons. Majestic was one word to describe it. I took Robert’s hand and was soon on the phoenix. Soon, it was starting to hover and it flew over the palace entrance. Heads looked up and admired the majestic beast. Our friends fled through the crowd, and I saw Panama and Amber getting the body of Kaitlyn.

“So, is this what it’s like to have a mount anytime of the day?” I asked, my hair flowing outwards.

“Pretty much. I haven’t heard of a Darkness elemental have a mount, but it has morphs.” He responded, looked back at me.

I heard yelling and screaming from behind me, and I saw everyone else. Jason was obviously in front of everyone, and the others seemed to be scattered. When I saw everyone but Angel, I grew worried. Sure, she couldn’t be up here, but even on the ground I didn’t even see her.

Something was going on, and I planned on finding out what it is. No matter the cost, danger or sacrifice, I was not about to lose another friend. Quickly, I looked at Robert and then to the others. I jumped off the phoenix without one word.
