Vanishing Into The Elements

Chapter 6

“What about the others?” I weakly asked, having trouble keeping my eyes open.

“Well, Joe was intent on killing you, which is no surprise to us. He hates Darkness people with a passion, only to have never seen one and be killed by us. Everyone else is staying behind to address the problem with him.”

Weakly, I nodded and my eyes grew heavy with every passing second. The scenery changed into a gray, slate-like room. I was no longer being carried, and instead I was laid on a cold surface. Amber started to yell, but I couldn’t hear anything. Soon, I felt nothing in my lower half of my body, which seemed familiar. Was it the maze? Yes, it was the maze when I last had lost feeling in my lower half and lost most of senses.

My blurry vision saw a person above me, and held something in his hands. I couldn’t make out what it was, but I could hear perfectly fine. It a grinding sound as soon as it hit me, I screamed and writhed around in pain. It hurt a lot, and not only that, it seemed to take out my organs, infuse them with something, and stick it back in. Groaning, my blurry vision still hadn’t subsided.

“Amber” I weakly called, and she came over to me.

“Yes?” She responded, sitting down on a chair next to the bed.

“What did he do to me?”

“Well, he took out your organs and infused them with metal and some blood bound item. Those things are rare, but he always has a few in stock. It is supposedly supposed to help you whenever you need extra power or if you get stabbed there again.”

“Oh. What about Kaitlyn?”

“She is healing faster than you are, so my guess is that she is seeping strength from you to heal her.”

Slowly, my vision started to return, but I still couldn’t see as far as I had hoped for. Hopelessly, I knew that I was probably going to be held back from the journey for a week, but I wouldn’t let that happen. Watching Amber’s eye movements, I sat up and sighed. She looked and me and said nothing.

“What?” I asked, smiling.

“Nothing. You seemed to be up pretty quick.” She responded, looking downwards.

Kaitlyn was groaning as the doctor did his business on her. Reaching out towards her, I was stopped by Amber. Panama watched it all happen, the taking out of organs and infusion of the two items. I was surprised that she wasn’t disturbed by it. Strange girl she was.

Soon, the other sorcerers joined us, along with a new Light sorcerer to help us with our journey. When the new Light sorcerer saw the procedures, he ran out of the room and I heard throwing up sounds. The doctor soon left Kaitlyn, who was breathing heavily and groaning. I went to reach to her again, and to only be stopped again by Amber.

“Why can’t I touch her, Amber?” I asked, looking at Amber.

“She needs a few minutes to recover, Heather. Wait till then, or she will drain all of your energy, leaving you with a small amount left to survive and gain more of.”

“Ok, is that why mine hand with hers were separated?”

“Yeah, that’s a huge reasoning, actually.”

Nodding, I slid off of the stone-like bed and tried to walk. Amber was bracing me and Panama handed me crutches to help me walk. Using them, I could walk better than usual. Soon, Kaitlyn was up and started walking fine. When she saw me, she gasped.

“What did he do to you?” Kaitlyn gasped, looking at me from head to toe..

“Well, I can’t walk very well because he must’ve done something to my leg, and he took out my organs, and infused them with a bunch of crap.”

“I suppose that would do it. Come on, we have a journey to take. Amber, take this note to the kitchen ladies.” Kaitlyn held out a note, and Amber took it.

While Amber was getting the food, I started my way out of the office place and walked down the halls with Panama. She led me to the door which led to the outside world. I was hoping that it wouldn’t be completely terrible to get to the capital city. I mean, they have to have some sense of locality to the city if it were to ever get attacked.

In the distance, I saw the others along with Amber carrying a sack of food and the new Light sorcerer. I was starting to get curious as to watch his name is. When they finally made it to the door, Kaitlyn opened it and outside was pretty gorgeous. It didn’t seem like anything could be dangerous out here.

“Hey, Light sorcerer dude, what’s your name?” I asked, looking at him.

“My name is Danny, and I am brother to Joe. Well, twins, but that doesn’t matter.” He responded, smiling at me as we left the safety of the indoors.

“Well, I suppose we are lucky. Someone carved out a path towards the center city. Does anyone know about this?” Amber asked, looking forwards.

“Yeah. My and my brother made it so no one had to go through the jungle area. This was made a little over 2 years ago.” Danny spoke, looking at it.

“Is it complete?”

“No, but it’s all dug out to Maehara. It’s mostly complete though.”

Amber nodded and walked towards the cobblestone path. It seemed pretty sturdy and nothing seemed bad about it. I felt safe on this path, trusting Danny’s judgement. People who were outside were trimming the jungle, tending to the garden, or testing out their powers further.

“Hey, do you know how far the capital city is?” Panama asked Danny, looking down at the small child.

“Yeah. A little over 5 miles. Why?” Danny responded, looking towards Panama.

“Oh, then we might have to stay the night then. Create a small camp. Heather is going to need it, she looks like she hasn’t slept in a few days.”

“Yeah, a little over a day.” I admitted, moving my crutches in a standardized motion.

They definitely hurt to use, but it hurt more to walk. I had to endure using the crutches until I could get used to the surgery on my leg. My organs weren’t affecting me, but something felt off about my leg. But, I kept pushing forwards. The suns, well, this is new, began to set.

“Come on, let’s set up camp. We hit a mile today, and hopefully we can hit the rest tomorrow. Heather, stay here with Panama. I’m going to set up the camp.” Kaitlyn spoke, and everyone dispersed except herself.

She levitated dead logs, sticks, and plants and wove them into a small house. it has a second floor from the looks of it. When everyone came back, they looked in shock. I made my way to the house, and Panama helped with the door. From the inside, it looked like any modern human house. Painted walls, more than enough rooms for everyone. A kitchen and a dining room is what I could clearly see.

I saw stairs, but I didn’t dare to use them. Kaitlyn was definitely talented, and this proved it. I chose the bedroom next to the stairs, which was ok with me. The bed was comfortable and it had clothes in the wardrobe. When everything was settled, I walked outside my room to get some food that Robert had made. It was steak cooked to perfection and what he rubbed it in was amazing.

“Where did you learn to cook this good, Robert?” I asked as I ate my steak.

“Well, from my dad who worked for Gordon Ramsay, but he’s dead. And so is my mom. She was an alright cook, I suppose.”

“Oh. I suppose that’s where you had gotten it from.” I replied, swallowing another bite of my steak.

After a few minutes, the others came to join me and Robert at the dining table. Eating that steak made me incredibly tired, so I left the table and headed to my room. Opening the door, it seemed a bit cold in the room, so I turned on the heat. I closed the door before I started to get dressed. I was glad that my room had no windows.

Changing into penguin pajamas, I threw my old clothes into the hopper and fell into bed. It being comfortable led me closer to falling asleep. It seemed like forever since I slept even though it was only a day or so. I put my crutches next to the bed before getting under the blanket to attempt to sleep.

I stared at the ceiling and sighed, wishing I had turned off the lights. A black blob left my hand and went to the light switch and turned off the lights. Looking at my hand, I sighed, wishing I didn’t have this power and I was at home, my mom still alive, watching tv. Slipping my hand under my head, I turned my body to the left.

Sleep was hard to come by for me, but I knew it would eventually come. What felt like hours were only minutes, I was feeling more tired. I just couldn’t sleep at all, leaving me more and more tired. For once, I knew I was sleeping because a different scenario happened in my dreams.
