Chapter 57. Change of Plans
Jack
“Have you found out where he is going to take the Alphas to?” I asked one of the kitchen staff members.
“Yes, to the grand ballroom in the back of the pack house.” The servant stated and I cursed within.
The grand ballroom had hardly been used, because I hadn’t taken the time to adjust the room to be more comfortable. The room only had one set of doors as the outer side was barricaded with a steep hill, so the air was a little humid in there as the current air refreshener machine had been broken. But worst of it was, was that if all those Alphas would be gathering up in there, and the doors would be locked, they would be trapped!
“Alright, keep on gathering information for me, and just pretend you have never seen me. I’ll be back shortly.” I said to the servant and he nodded.
Dennis
Fucking bored I was, to smile continuously into accepting all the gratulations for my newly acquired title as Alpha. I had never cared about myself being publicly known this way. This party was only a means to get all the Alphas here, to lure both Jack and the hunter King towards my house.
But, on the other hand, this way I could proclaim my rightful title appropriately. So, now I was waiting for my latest guest to come in here. I heard a set of double knocks on the small secret entrance at the back of my office, and I smiled. The fearsome hunter King had decided to show up! I opened the safety wall and let the man get inside. I quickly scanned the area behind him, but couldn’t detect any other people.
Not that there weren’t any other people, as I couldn’t believe that the King just came here completely alone. But right now I couldn’t see any other person than the King himself.
“So, where is my daughter?” He instantly got to the point.
He had grey hair, cut in strong lines, was strongly built, wore military issued clothes and when he folded his arms over each other, he reminded me of an actor from that movie with the blue people.
“She’s not here yet.” I commented with a grin on my face, as I sat down in my chair at the desk.
“You said she’d be here!” He grunted.
“No, I said that I wouldn’t want to miss that look upon her face, when she realized you are a part of all of this.”
“You motherfucking- “Shut it!” I interrupted him with a forced shout and he looked perplexed for just a second. “She will be here, there is no doubt about that.” I calmly said to him, while getting up from my chair.
I could have decided to kill this man, right here, in my office. But that wouldn’t get me anything I wanted. In the end I wanted to rule all the shifters, so I needed some sort of payment for the other Alphas in order for them to believe in my ruling. So, when it was time, I would drag him out to the ballroom, to make him a gift towards the others.
“Now, you can help yourself with the whiskey here, and when it’s time, I’ll come and get you.” I stated, without asking for his approval.
Right about now, all the Alpha’s were being guided towards the ballroom as there I had put up benches and tables for us to be able to start some conversations. I not only wanted them to congratulate me on becoming the Alpha, but I also wanted to discuss some matters, referring to the betrayal of Maxwell and Jack. I wanted them to get killed or at least not ever to be able to lead any pack, anytime soon!
And I had been smiling, when Maxwell indeed just came in here, with his Beta. He was making this even easier than I had ever expected it to be!
I checked the tablet that I had taken with me, from my office, and saw that the machine that I had repaired and updated, was still under my complete control. Good! Nothing could go wrong now.
“Thank you all for visiting my newly acquired pack!” I started my monologue. “But, as my first act as Alpha, I’d like to appoint the presence of a traitor amongst us.” I said and some of the Alphas laughed, thinking I was joking to break the ice in this room. But it wasn’t anything like that, I was actually accusing someone, for real!
I saw Maxwell looking at me, with fury in his eyes, which made me want to smile even harder. But if I wanted to show myself as a serious Alpha, I needed a serious face.
“The former Alpha of my pack, has been seeking refuge at a different pack. A pack that was once well befriended with this one. But instead of rejecting Jack, the Alpha has actually accepted his arrival and even helped him! And the worst of this is, is that they both arranged for a meeting to want to happen on this same day! A meeting of which they told you that they wanted to attack the hunter King. And even though I admire this subject, I know for sure that that’s not the only reason they wanted you all to be at their meeting. They wanted to overthrow me from my rightfully acquired title!” I took a few breaths and then continued to speak.
“You all know of whom I speak, as you all had been invited to come to their meeting! But, I don’t want to accuse you all for your own betrayal.” I explained, and now some of the Alpha’s growled at the fact that I called them betrayers as well. “No, I only want to accuse Alpha Maxwell for conspiring against another Alpha!” I pointed directly at him, and he growled displeasingly.
“You of all people should know how this really happened, you traitor! Jack has done nothing wrong!” Maxwell shouted as he stood up from his chair. Some gasps were heard by him calling me a traitor, and other Alphas only enjoyed this little show.
“I did no such thing! How could you accuse me of something like this!” I yelled back with the most shocked expression I could muster. Of course I wasn’t shocked at all, in fact I was smiling on the inside, as I was happy to have riled him up so quickly.
Jack
“He has accused Maxwell for being a betrayer.” One of Maxwell’s leopards told me, as I reached the secret hide out. I cursed loudly, but this wasn’t a thing that we hadn’t foreseen. It was high likely that Dennis was going to pull something off like this. But even so, I still don’t like that it actually happened.
“Where is Doreen?” I asked the leopard. “She has left north, together with Vic and Thor.” He replied.
I grunted at this, why couldn’t she just stay here, waiting for me to return? Why did she always wanted to go against my commands? She is going to be the Queen, I know that, but I have more experience with these kinds of things.
And I know that I have to let go of my way of thinking that she is still that fragile woman that came into my town, but that doesn’t mean that I have to like it!
“Little mate, are you going to come back here, anytime soon?” I linked her.
“No, I can’t. You have to come here, there’s something you need to see.” She replied.
“What the…- “Hell?” Doreen interrupted my sentence. “Yes indeed, it has been hell for these women.” She continued, and all I could do was to avert my eyes from the tortured females in the barn.
My fury arose, as I couldn’t have ever imagined for Dennis to get money in such a filthy way, a way that is so low that I even became angry at the warriors that had guarded them.
“I didn’t lead this pack, I didn’t train this pack, for you to let this happen! How could you have agreed to this!” I yelled to my former lead warrior.
He scrunched up in shame, as he knew I was right, even though the circumstances were dire for them to begin with. Dennis had probably threatened them to send them off to the hunter King, just as he did with me, and they had families to take care of as well. But even so, this lack of character was annoying me to say the least.
“We never treated them in a bad way, Alpha.” He tried to comfort himself a bit, by saying something lousy like this.
“I don’t care! You never should have accepted that Dennis did this! You are all strong bears, you could have taken him out on your own!”
“No, we couldn’t have.” He suddenly said. “He kept the most loyal bears with him, in the packhouse. And ordered for us to keep the women contained. So, when we were able, we fed the females and tried to medicate them when they were at their worst. But we couldn’t do too much, otherwise Dennis would have known.” He continued his explanation and I sighed.
I looked at the women that had been listening to what we had said. “Is it true? These warriors here, never did anything inappropriate?” I asked them, and some of them nodded.
“Fine, I believe you.” I said to the lead warrior again and he lowered his shoulders in relief. “Now, let’s get these women to safety, shall we?”
In the next hour, some of Maxwell’s warriors had taken the females back to the trucks and cars on the distant parking lot, and drove them off towards his pack. Then, we gathered up together, and came up with an adjustment to our original plan, as we now had fifteen warriors of which some could go into the packhouse without being strangely looked upon.
“You sure, you want to do it like this?” Doreen asked me.
“Yes, it’s the only way for me to get inside and towards the ballroom, without having to fight anyone.” I replied, while Doreen was still contemplating if she was agreeing with this plan or not.
