Chapter 36. Paranoid
Jack
We kept on fighting until every single one of those bastard hunters were either dead or had run away in fear.
For a moment I thought that Dennis had been going to Doreen, but the warriors that I had send towards my house, had informed me that she was still safely asleep, so I still didn’t know where he had gone. I had been linking him several times already and it was annoying me as fuck.
“Alpha? What happened here?” I suddenly heard him behind me, innocently using my title now!
“What are you talking-
“Alpha, I’m the Beta, why didn’t you inform me of an attack? I could have helped you with it!” Dennis interrupted me accusingly.
What the hell? He had been fighting off these bastards he said, but then he was nowhere to be found! Where had he been all this time? “Dennis, you knew about this!” I yelled to him and my warriors started to gather around us, suspicious of what was going on.
“No, I didn’t! I had the day shift for patrol, so I was sleeping now! Alpha, please, why didn’t you inform me?” He said even louder. “Ever since that moment where you wanted to release me from my title, you have been distant to me, the pack has seen it too!” He continued.
My warriors began to whisper, agreeing to Dennis, but I got more furious! “Dennis, I linked you! You said you were fighting right here!” I continued.
“Sorry Alpha, but I can confirm that he went straight to his bed, he was exhausted so I helped him to his room.” One of my warriors said. “See?” Dennis pointed out. “Maybe you have been linking with someone else perhaps, I mean, having to take care of a pack is taking a lot of energy from you lately.” Dennis softened the situation, getting in the grace of my warriors.
Was this his plan all along? Getting my pack to distrust me and for him to rise up? He definitely has picked up his game, while I still can’t lay a single finger on him! Fuck!
“Dennis, it doesn’t matter whether you were here or not, I’m the Alpha and I have taken care of the situation.” I claimed and walked out towards my house again, where Doreen’s presence can calm my fucking rage down!
Asshole!
My paperwork, with cryptic notes about my plans for getting rid of Dennis, shoved aside, I tiredly rubbed my face in annoyance.
I had worked all day trying to figure out why the hunters would attack us last night and even asked Dennis for some explanation as he had made a deal with King Deveraux to wait for the month to pass. But even Dennis couldn’t say why this happened, all he did was making more stupid comments about my stress-level when my men were around us. He was continuously trying to get under my skin as with those comments he was downgrading my capabilities as an Alpha and all I could do was listen to him, not being able to retort against it! For now.
But now that I was home and eating dinner with Doreen, it softened my mood a little.
“So, all I have to do, is focus on someone specific and think of words to say?” Doreen said to me, after finishing our dinner.
My mark on her has been healed completely and I have to get her to be able to link as soon as possible, because I have the idea that Dennis is going to keep playing more of these games, just like he did yesterday.
I only told Doreen about the attack and that everyone on our side was alright, but I hadn’t told her about Dennis’ comments, as it’s my responsibility to take care of things like this. Besides, she already has heard enough about Dennis to hate him, so this is unnecessary for her to know.
“Yes, just focus and speak.” I replied to her question.
“Hey sweetheart, do you want me to take you upstairs again?” I linked to her, while thinking back about our ravenous endeavours and grew hard already. I wanted to see if she could hear me, but she gave no response. “Hey love, what if I pick you up, bend you over the kitchen counter and take you from behind?” Nope, still no response, while she was looking at me with squinted eyes and bunched up lips, trying to focus on linking. “Love, I need you to hear me soon, because my cock is growing larger by the second, as I see your tits on the edge of the counter!” I practically yelled into her mind and suddenly she jumped up.
“Yes, I could hear something! Someone was telling me to count!” She said happily.
Telling her to count? What is she… Oh wait!
“No, love, I was telling you that I see your gorgeous tits on the edge of the counter!” I linked her again and her cheeks blushed in an instant.
“I didn’t hear a thing. I’m done with this.” She said out loud, faking a pout of annoyance while pulling her vest around her chest. Clearly, she did hear me as she wouldn’t have explicitly wrapped her vest around herself to cover her body and I would have laughed at her if it weren’t for what she did then. “If you want to see more, come and get me.” She linked to me, when I heard her run upstairs.
What the hell?! Not only did she manage to link me a full sentence, but she even put in some emotion with it too, as her passionate voice aroused me to my core! My amazing vixen surprises me again! Goddess, I love her! But she didn’t have to tell me twice, for me to come after her! I dropped everything and ran right upstairs to claim what was mine.
But when I got into the bedroom there was something off with Doreen. She just stood there, still fully clothed, looking around as if she was searching for something.
“You alright?” I asked her and my question snapped her out of whatever state she was in.
“Uhm yeah.” She lied. “Just out of curiosity, shifters can’t turn invisible right?” She asked me with a huge frown on her face, clearly making sure that her question is strange to ask.
I walked closer to her and took hold of her waist with both my hands. “No, we can’t turn invisible. But why do you ask?” I chuckled.
“Oh nothing, the stress must be playing tricks with my mind.” She smiled it off and went to her side of the bed to get undressed.
I could feel the sexual tension had dissipated by whatever threat she was feeling, because she must have sensed or saw something weird for her to ask about invisibility. But while making sure that there was truly no one in the room with us, I stripped as well and crawled in bed next to her. She didn’t have to say it, but I knew that she wasn’t keen on having sex now, so I just spooned her back and held her tight.
Doreen
I could’ve sworn that my necklace was in the drawer by the mirror, as I had put it there more than a week ago and never looked at it once again. Had I subconsciously taken it out of the drawer and hung it on the ornament above the mirror? I was thinking back really hard, but I couldn’t come up with a moment where I could have possibly done that.
But I must have done it, right?
I wiggled myself a little closer to Jack, wrapping my arms around his, while holding tight of the blanket. My mind wanted to drift off towards a nice dream but I still got the eerie feeling that there was someone in the room with us.
After a little while, Jack began to snore behind me but I was still wide awake. Carefully, I pushed him back a little, urging him to turn himself around so I could move more. Luckily he did and I began to sit up straight, with my back against the wall and a cushion in between.
My paranoid mind was working overtime as I used the little moonlight that shone through the curtains to look around the room. I couldn’t see anything or anyone out of the ordinary and nor could I hear a single different breath in this room besides ours. But still, my senses were giving off signals of something odd.
I shook my head as I thought I was going completely mental here and stood up from the bed, walked over to the mirror and put the necklace back into the drawer where I had put it before.
But when I lifted my head again and took a last look into the mirror to talk some sense into my own reflection, I suddenly saw something moving behind me! Something that couldn’t have been Jack or something that I did, no, it was another person! An old lady with curly grey hair!
I gasped as the lady didn’t leave but only smiled gently, at which I quickly turned myself around to see if the reflection was real. But, as if I’m in some horror scene, of course the lady was gone! My mind was definitely playing tricks now! I’m going crazy here!
I ran into the bathroom and wet my face with some cold water. “Get yourself together!” I whispered to my reflection. “In a few weeks dangerous things could be happening and Jack can’t deal with you getting paranoid as well!” I continued and took a certain stance.
Jack still didn’t explain to me what his plan was, to get rid of Dennis, but I’m sure that I have to be strong and be able to act up my part of that plan as well. We didn’t need a grey old lady right now! So I took a few deep breaths and went out of the bathroom to get cosy in bed with Jack again.
No further reflections or weird senses were to be seen or felt now, so I suppose I had gotten rid of my own paranoia. I held Jack tight and dozed off.
Jack
“AHH!” Doreen yelped and I jumped up from the bed while rubbing my eyes and adjusting to the sunlight that shone through the curtains. “No! This can’t be!” She shouted while walking a few steps backwards from the mirror.
Instantly, I rushed my way over to her and stepped in front of her. Her eyes were completely widened in shock and she was pointing with one hand towards the mirror and the other was covering her mouth.
“What is it?!” I yelled to her, while glancing back and forth between the mirror and her. I couldn’t understand what was wrong, there wasn’t anything out of the ordinary. A cabinet, an old mirror, and Doreen’s necklace hanging on the ornament, that’s all!
A/n: 😱👻 Spooky!
