Untamed - Book 2

Chapter 11

Alpha Jordan

“You can’t possibly think this to be the best plan of action!” Andrus shouts from his chair near the back of the group.

“They will not be expecting us to attack so soon after taking down Altier, Laurent AND the witches council, so it definitely is our best plan. We need to get to catch them off guard if we wish to minimize casualties.” Alpha Richards counters in a calm tone.

“Whether you agree or not, this is the plan…it’s our only option. We need to do this before they have a chance to build their defenses.” Liera speaks in a strange, almost ethereal voice.

“You have to understand that we don’t have time to formulate a better plan. We don’t have time to bicker and quarrel over other options. Every minute we waste is a minute they spend preparing themselves. If you are not willing to risk your people’s lives for this, then you know where the door is. Anyone who is willing to do what it takes to see this through, we leave at sundown tomorrow.” Cora shouts to the people before us, her tone leaving no room for further discussion. Even with everyone’s arguing, looking in their eyes I can see that they will follow her. She is a sign of hope, a beacon in the darkness and we are all moths to her flame.

“Come, we should get some rest.” I take her hand in mine and lead her out of the hall where we are met with the curious glances of Danny and Luca. I have noticed how closely Danny has watched Luca, leaving me questioning if there is something I am missing.

“I am coming with you.” Luca announces as Cora approaches him.

“Luca, I just got you back and you are still too weak.” Luca looks at her much like a child would look at their older sibling after being told they are too small to play.

“Cora, If you’re going, I’m going with you. I’m not asking for permission.” His defiant tone sounds so much like Cora’s that I have to bite back my laughter, disguising it with a cough.

“Luca…” He cuts her off, putting up more fight than I had thought him capable of.

“Damn it, Cora! I’m going!” She steps closer and grabs the back of his neck, pulling his forehead against hers.

“Ok, brother. If you are going, you need to get some rest.” She steps back and her attention shifts to Danny, who is looking at Luca with a strange expression.

“Danny, can you see to it that my brother rests and eats? Your mate will need it if he is going to survive the battle to come.” I have no doubt that my expression is one of pure shock. How did I not see it? Better yet, how the hell did she know?

“I can do that. Come on, Luca.” I watch as they both walk up the stairs and I smirk when I see Danny take Luca into his personal room.

“Wow. I can honestly say I didn’t see that coming.” She grabs my hand, lacing her fingers with mine and pulls me along to our rooms on the third floor.

“Does it bother you?” Cora finally asks as we walk through the door to her bedroom.

“Not at all! I am glad Danny found someone. I just didn’t think it would be in the middle of a war.” I can’t help laughing at the thought of it.

“Danny will be good for Luca. I don’t know many people who can keep up with him, but Danny just might be the one.” She pulls me behind her until I have my arms wrapped around her waist tightly and nuzzle into her neck, breathing her scent in deeply.

“You were amazing today, Cora.” I feel her body tense and I can feel her worry through the bond.

“I lost control.” I know her worry is because of how I acted before, but I need her to feel how much I respect her for everything she is, even her monster is beautiful in my eyes.

“You did what was necessary and you saved countless people’s lives. Everything you have done has been to help everyone here. I don’t know why the goddess paired us, but I am the luckiest man alive because of it. She blessed me with a mate who is strong, intelligent and who is a natural leader. She even made sure she has enough sass to keep me on my toes.” I smirk against her skin and I feel the light jolting as she chuckles softly.

“I want you to promise me something.” I place a gentle kiss on her neck and wait for her to continue.

“Promise me that if things go sideways, you will get Luca out of there.” I turn her to face me, grabbing the sides of her face so that she has no choice but to look at me.

“Nothing is going to happen. We’re going to be okay.” She shakes her head and places her hands over mine.

“Jordan, please. Promise me you will keep him safe, even if it means taking him away if things get bad.” I nod my head, a lie in the moment to sooth my mate. If it comes down to protecting her brother or protecting her, I know it wouldn’t even be a choice for me.

“Let’s get some rest.” I pull her to her bed and lay beside her, holding her tightly to me as we both drift to sleep.
