Chapter 18
Alpha Jordan
“Damn, jumping into a cold lake has never felt so good.” Truer words have never been spoken. The cold water caressing my heated skin is a welcome feeling. I swipe my hand over my head, slicking back my wet hair. My gaze shifts to the little witch and I feel a sudden jolt, like a current of electricity shooting through my veins. My wolf paces frantically, as eager to understand this new feeling as I am. Her eyes shift slightly, the green lighten ever so slightly. Can she feel it too?
‘Alpha, Lady Laurent wishes to speak with you. She is being rather…adamant.’
‘We just found the location where the ritual will take place. I will head back shortly.’
I close off the link, feeling more than a little irritated with the interruption.
“We should get going. I can find my way to the cabin on my own.” I narrow my eyes at her, wondering what gave away the conversation I just had with Danny.
“I can take you back, it’s not a problem.” She begins walking toward the shore, keeping her eyes lowered.
“You should hurry back, alpha. You shouldn’t keep your people waiting. I promise I will be fine.” She grabs her bag and begins to walk away. My feet carry me faster than my mind can process what I am doing, carrying me to her and grabbing her hand as soon as I am close enough.
“What’s wrong?” She keeps her eyes lowered, but the small gasp that slips past her lips when I take her hand in mine is all the confirmation I need. Whatever this is, she feels it too.
“You need to get back. Your future luna is waiting for you and I need to prepare for the ritual.” She pulls her hand free and continues walking, leaving me with a flood of unfamiliar emotions and my broken thoughts. I head back toward the pack house, hoping the quiet walk will help me to clear my mind, but by the time I arrive, my thoughts are more muddled than before.
“Alpha, she is in your chambers.” My head whips up and I find Danny shifting nervously in front of me.
“Why the fuck is she in my room?!” He sighs loudly and throws his hands in the air.
“She wouldn’t listen. I told her you weren’t here and that she was not allowed in your chambers, but she stormed past me and threatened to call her father if I laid a hand on her!” I pat him on the shoulder and walk through the back entrance of the pack house, not stopping until I am standing in front of the door to my private chambers. I throw open the door to find her sitting on the edge of my bed, an act that both enrages and disgusts me in ways I am not sure I understand.
“What the hell do you think you are doing?” She jumps up and walks toward me, the over exaggerated swaying of her hips only further adding to the ever present disgust I feel toward her.
“I haven’t seen you all day. I was beginning to think that nasty little witch might have done something to you.” My wolf growls at her insult and I feel him trying to push forward. I try to force him back when my eyes fall on her bare neck.
“Where is your amulet?” She takes a small step back and scowls at me.
“I don’t need help with creating a bond with you. I already feel it, don’t you?” I growl loudly and feel more pleasure than I should when she jumps and takes several steps back.
“I feel nothing for you but pity and it runs bone deep. If you cannot do something so simple as wearing an amulet to help create a bond that will ensure the future of our people, then how can you ever be a good enough luna to lead them?” Her mouth opens and closes several times, but no words come out. I walk past her, going to my walk in closet and grabbing clean, dry clothes. I had hoped she would be gone by the time I was dressed, but it seems her intelligence is even less of an attribute than I had realized.
“Jordan, I will wear the damn amulet. Hell, I will go and put it on right now! I already feel connected to you, but if that is what it takes for you to feel connected to me, I will do it!” I take a few large, menacing steps toward her, my anger burning like an inferno in my veins.
“The only reason you are here is because of an arrangement made by our parents, but do not think for a moment that I want you here. You are a means to ensure the future of my pack, nothing more. Wear the amulet, or don’t. If the ritual fails, it will be because you couldn’t follow simple directions and sacrifice your vanity for the sake of others. You are a self-entitled, sorry excuse for a luna. Now, get the fuck out of my room!” She turns and rushes out, thankfully using her limited intelligence to flee without speaking. After a few minutes pass, Danny is standing in my doorway.
