Chapter 17
Cynthia POV
"Who is this?" His voice pulls me out of my world of Fantasy, and I watch him stare at Adelie with a questioning look on his face.
"She's our guest... Your guest," His mom replies to him instead, and he turns his head to look at me with a blank expression on his face. As his pair of hazel eyes pierce into mine, I feel my heart melt in my chest, and I gulp down nothing nervously.
"Who are you?" His deep voice sounds sexy to me, and I blush hard. I quickly stand up to my feet.
"Uhm... Good day, Asher... My name is Cynthia... Adelie's colleague," I reply to him, and he pulls a face that says 'so?'.
"So?" He finally says it to my face, and I gulp down nothing nervously.
"Uhm..." I pause and grab the wrapped gift from my handbag that's on the couch, handing it to him.
"Happy birthday, Asher... Please accept my little gift," I smile at him nervously, but he only stares back at me with the same expression on his face. He doesn't look angry, sad, happy, or even impressed with my kind gesture. For some seconds, I ask myself what he's thinking at the moment, but too bad that I am just a human that can't even read people's minds. If I could, then I think this would've been the best time it'll be useful to me.
Slowly, I tilt my head to look at Adelie who has a look on her face that shows that there's a problem, the same goes with his mom, and I'm beginning to ask myself if I've done something wrong because I can't remember doing anything since I came in here.
"Who told you it's my birthday today?" His voice sounds so scary this time, and his expression suddenly changes to a scary one, like he would devour me anytime soon if I don't get the hell out of his sight, but I'm still bold enough to stand still. I'm ready for whatever comes out of this.
"Uhm... I saw it in your ID card," How I still manage to reply to him confidently, knowing that I'm lying is crazy. What if he knows that I'm lying? Will he get mad at me?
"I hate people that lie to me, so who the hell told you that it's my birthday today?" He snaps at me angrily this time, looking even scarier.
"I did!" Adelie chips in before I can reply to him, and I slowly tilt my head to see her on her feet, and I bite my bottom lip. Is he going to be mad at her now? I just hope that I haven't caused trouble for this family.
I watch as he stares at her for a few seconds, while still maintaining an angry look on. He finally tilts his head to face me, and I flinch fearfully.
"I don't need your gift... And I would appreciate it if we don't ever cross path in the future," He says to me coldly, and walk past me.
"I like you, Asher," I spill out, although it was difficult to do. An awkward silence assumes the atmosphere as I wait patiently for him to say something to me.
He turns and faces me while having his hands tucked inside his pockets, and a smirk dancing on his lips.
"You like me? Sorry, but ugly girls are not my spec. When you become beautiful in the future, you can come to me for a night, which I will gladly give," He smirks at me before he turns to leave.
"Who the hell do you think you are, Asher? The most handsome man that gets whatever he wants? How dare you treat my friend like that?" Adelie yells at the top of her voice, as she grabs the collar of his shirt, and pulls him back. "Adelie..." Tears stream down my cheeks as I try to call him, but he gives me a look that says 'stay out of this'.
"Why the hell are you doing this, huh? If you have a problem with your birthday, why don't you fucking speak up about it, and just stop looking so pathetic in the eyes of people?" Adelie scoffs at him.
"Adelie!" He turns swiftly to face her with an angry look on his face.
"What? Do you want to hit me for telling you the truth? Why don't you fucking go ahead and raise your hand on me, you jerk! Go ahead and hit me, I dare you!" Adelie further yells, and he slowly clenches his fingers as he glares hard at her. He looks like he's trying so hard to resist hurting his sister.
"What? Are you just going to stare at me like that like a pathetic dog? Say something, you jerk!" She hits him hard on his chest, and he takes a deep breath.
"Let's not do this here, Adelie, please," The way he suddenly becomes calm makes me wonder if he was the same man that was so fierce moments ago.
"Why? How dare you call my friend ugly? Do you think of yourself as a man now for insulting a woman that has the courage to confess her feelings to you? You are a freaking pathetic idiot, Asher. You are a bastard!" She yells at him for the umpteenth time, and he turns his face away.
"Uhm... I'll be on my way now," I quickly grab my handbag from the couch and stride to the door, but his voice brings me to an abrupt halt.
"I'm sorry, Cynthia," He says to me, and I stop for a few seconds before I finally pull the door open, and storm out of the house.
I break into tears as soon as I step out of the house. Those are the most painful words that anyone has ever said to me. It wasn't enough that he rejected me, but he made sure he made me look worthless.
I scurry out of the gate and haul down a cab, which drives me out of the place...
