Chapter 37
“Do you wanna order something out?” Rick asked when they’d both settled down in front of the television.
The rain had eased up and there was no mention of a thunderstorm being eminent anymore.
“Sure. What did you have in mind?” she asked, flipping channels.
“Pizza?”
Abigail shrugged.
“Pizza it is then.” Rick picked up the cordless and made the order before sitting next to her on the sofa.
“What are you watching?” he asked, narrowing his eyes at the television screen.
“While you were sleeping.”
“A chick flick.” Rick stated.
“It’s more than that.” Abigail protested.
“What’s it about then?”
“Well, Sandra Bullock plays this woman who works at a subway station and falls for this guy she sees everyday but doesn’t know she exists. Then she ends up saving his life, but he ends up in a coma and she pretends to be his fiancée so she could see him in the hospital and ends up falling in love with his brother and him with her.”
Rick stared at her and smiled.
“As I said before, a chick flick.”
Abigail swatted the back of his head.
“You’re lucky you’re injured, I could rebel.” He said, before grabbing the remote from her hand.
“Hey!”
“My house, my TV.” He said as he flipped channels. ’Hey! Goonies!”
Abigail folded her arms.
“That’s a kiddie movie.”
“It’s a classic!” he protested.
The pizza arrived barely ten minutes later and they both made quick work of it as they agreed on watching ‘Gone in sixty seconds’.
The long flight and food finally made Abigail sleepy. She and Rick were so close on the sofa that she easily rested her head on his shoulder and curled her legs beneath her.
When Rick looked back at her five minutes later, she was fast asleep. He turned off the television then and put one arm around her shoulders as the other went under her knees as he lifted her in his arms.
She wasn’t very heavy and that made him realize that he would be content holding her like that all day long. He wasn’t going to though, he could see she was tired. Hell, so was he and he figured that she’d be more comfortable in a bed and that despite her previous actions, wouldn’t mind him in it.. with her.
He reached his bedroom then and saw that the door was slightly ajar. He shouldered it open and walked towards the bed. He put her down gently and she instinctively rolled onto her stomach. He saw her wince at the momentary discomfort that action had caused and settled herself.
Rick watched her sleeping in his bed and realized that his life was never going to be the same again. He couldn’t picture the rest of his life without Abigail in it. The challenge to him was going to be convincing her of that. He knew, right now, the fact that he was her case, made things sticky between them. He hoped that when all this was behind them, they could finally have a normal relationship. With that thought in mind, he pulled off his t-shirt and slipped into bed beside her. The rain had started drizzling once again and he reached down and pulled the blanket over them. He wanted desperately to reach out and hold her against him but knew if she were awake, she would never have allowed it. Besides, he highly doubted that he’d be thinking of sleeping if he had her in his arms. God knew he was already having a hard time of it with her so near. He had to have her… soon. He knew she would give in eventually. Her response to him had already assured him of that, but having to wait was killing him. He wasn’t used to waiting on anything..or anyone. Women always threw themselves at him and he’d always took what he wanted, when he wanted it, no questions asked. That’s just how things were for him. Well, that’s how things were before he met Detective Rains here.
He saw her shiver and pulled the blanket up to her chin. She pouted then and he sighed. Please God, let it be soon.
