Washington University research has indicated a rise in the phenomenon known as ‘Time Envy’, described as the desire to Travel through a Transporter and live in the past - just like folk-hero Michael Hunter.
Professor of Social Sciences, Dr Janice Crump, heads a research institute that monitors changing social trends. She describes Time Envy as a significant shift in the desires of our teens and young adults.
“We constantly monitor what is in vogue, such as the latest in music, fashion, and entertainment crazes, including the use of technology. Young people in the sixties and seventies looked up to astronauts and space travel. Today’s youth and young adults seek to escape entirely and live in the past.”
The research group sees the latest Saxon styles in fashion and popular culture as one indication of this. “In our research, we asked what the respondent’s dream life would be. An astonishing 67% suggested they would prefer to live a thousand years in the past,” explained Dr Crump.
“While there is always a certain degree of dissatisfaction with current trends and life situations, we find the desire to live in the past surprisingly prevalent. This might be due to the availability of travel to a time that has been glamorised by popular media,” she said.
