Chapter 4
Mia looked at her friend with a furrowed brow, noting that Letta had appeared not quite herself for some time now.
"Are you sure you're not unwell?" Mia asked, curious, as she approached Letta, who was sitting there trying to pull her sweater closer. "I'm fine, I think," Letta replied, causing Mia to sigh in frustration.
"That's not a definite answer, Letta. You need to get yourself checked or look into your possibly packed schedule. These past few weeks, you've been refusing to take flights," Mia said, making Letta clench her sweaty fingers.
"Actually, I've already submitted my resignation letter," Letta suddenly announced, shocking Mia with the sudden decision Letta had made. Letta hadn't mentioned it at all to Mia, who always knew everything Letta was dealing with. Mia seemed slightly disappointed with Letta's decision.
"And then?" Mia asked, waiting for Letta to continue.
"I can't just leave right away. I said I wanted to leave right now, but it might take about two weeks to process the data. I've asked Mrs. Dora not to assign me any more flying duties," Letta explained, making Mia furrow her brow even more. The reasons why Letta had been refusing to take flights these past few weeks finally led Mia to sit beside Letta and grasp her friend's very cold hand.
"We've been friends for more than just a year or two. Are you ignoring that fact? Even all this time, if you just had the flu, you would tell me. But this?" Mia asked, visibly unhappy with Letta's decision, prompting Letta to return her grip on Mia's hand.
"I'm fine, Mia. I'm just tired of this job," Letta replied with the usual excuses she gave her friend. Although Letta was certain Mia wouldn't easily believe it, especially seeing her rolling her eyes, as if considering the reason as mere nonsense. "You think I'll believe the reason is just because you're tired of your job? This is the job you've dreamed of. How can you see it that way?" Mia said, making Letta fall silent for a moment.
"I've found another job, and right now, I might be feeling sick. But it's not a serious illness that would worry people around me, including you. I just don't want to keep working for the airline. I've applied for a job at a coffee shop. It'll be enjoyable, serving sweet treats and warm coffee to customers in a relaxed atmosphere," Letta said, leaving Mia silent and perplexed by her friend's sudden decision.
Indeed, besides dreaming of becoming a flight attendant, one of the jobs Letta had always wanted was to work at a coffee shop. She found it fascinating, enjoying the aroma of coffee every morning, whatever her taste preference was, which Mia could only ignore.
"Does Abian know?" Mia asked, making Letta's heart beat multiply. Just thinking about it made Letta's head throb fiercely, let alone having to meet Abian right now. Of course, Letta couldn't tell Mia about it, which made her nod.
"Of course, I've told Abian, although it was only over the phone because I couldn't meet him in person. I'll talk to him directly about it when we have the time," Letta said, causing Mia to let out a long sigh. Even though she was the one with the problem at the moment, Mia seemed more frustrated when she looked at herself.
"Alright, at least I can rely on Abian being by your side, even if you don't believe in me anymore," Mia said, making Letta pout.
"Come on, I don't see myself like that. I just didn't want to clutter your mind before you leave for your next flight," Letta said, as Mia shrugged nonchalantly.
"Okay. Take care, see you again on the weekend, and give my regards to Abian if you meet him," Mia said, prompting Letta to nod, watching her friend pull her suitcase towards the plane that would take her back to serving passengers as she always did.
However, these past few weeks, Letta couldn't do it. Letta let out a long sigh. Instead, she had to assist some other employees with tasks around the office. For Letta, that was better than forcing herself to take flights and endangering herself and the unborn child in her womb.
Letta's movements halted as her fingers were about to play on the keyboard. When Abian's name crossed her mind again, Letta truly didn't know what to do to face Abian. Should she honestly tell him that she slept with a stranger and was now pregnant? The thought made Letta let out a long breath. Even just imagining the expression Abian would give her was unbearable for Letta, let alone facing him directly.
Letta began shaking her head. Just thinking about it would further hinder her work, forcing Letta to refocus. However, just as she was about to start working, a wave of nausea suddenly rose from her stomach to her throat, making it impossible for Letta to hold back any longer. Letta then rushed to the nearest restroom from her office.
Luckily, the people around her weren't too concerned about her condition, so Letta didn't have to come up with excuses for every bout of morning sickness she experienced. It was sometimes agonizing and made her throat feel sore. Letta continued to vomit clear fluid from her throat, making her nose sting.
Letta then splashed her face with water, looking at the large mirror in front of her. Her face was becoming paler and more gaunt. Had she been forgetting to eat? And what about the unborn child in her womb? Was the baby getting proper nutrition? Right now, she couldn't just think about herself; there was one life she had to consider. Letta couldn't afford to be selfish just because of her own mistakes.
Finally, Letta chose to return to her office, but her steps halted when she saw a familiar-looking man at the end of the corridor with his broad gait, accompanied by a few people next to him. Whatever conversation they were having seemed urgent. This made Letta choose to shift her body, giving way to the owner of the airline, causing her heart to feel like it was about to explode right then and there.
