Chapter 10
I was not rescued by Maliki and Toby did not latch on to me. I was up in the air held by this demon looking creature. Squawking and screaming as it flew high in the air. It clinched harder into the skin of my back, tearing my flesh. It flies over trees, and then swoops down leaving me inches from a wild flowing river. The river is a dark gray color, almost black, with red lines and decaying pink foam.
The creature drops me down on to a large rock on the edge of a waterfall. The rock is covered with a blue substance that now covers me. It burns my eyes, so I franticly try to get it off. I take my jacket off and use the inside that is not tarnished by the blue liquid. I rub my eyes and then look in front of me. My eyes are blurry at first but gain back their focus. There in front of me, is the demon looking creature that brought me here. His burning red eyes stare at me; its flat beak looking mouth looks as if it is grinning. It has a black scaly body, with four large legs that have huge sharp claws. The front claws are drenched with the blood from my back. Its wings look like a bat’s wings, but much larger.
I stand up breathing heavily; my heart feels like it is going to burst out of my body. I want to scream something but my mouth won’t open. Lightening is flashing close above me, and I hear a rumble in the sky. My body starts shaking, when I see the creature move towards me. I back away slowly until I reach the edge of the rock that drops off to complete blackness. The creature is now at my face, just inches from my nose. I am breathing heavily; my heart is pounding, my body shaking.
The creature hisses, “Fall.” And I fall.
I awake screaming and grabbing hold of the blanket I am laying on. My heart beating fast and I start gasping for air. Tears fill my eyes, but as soon as I realize I am not falling, I am back in the cave, I wipe them away. I sit up slightly to see Maliki and Toby next to the fire staring at me.
Before they can say anything, I quickly snap, “I’m fine.” I sit all the way up.
I start fixing my hair as a distraction. As I run my fingers through my hair I feel something hard, I pull it out and see it is my mother’s jeweled pin. I forgot all about the pin after I left the hospital room. I place the pin on the ground next to me and put my hair into a messy bun, for a second I think of Anna. I rub my forehead to stop thinking, and pick up the pin and put it back in my hair.
“Breakfast is ready if you want to eat?” Maliki says softly.
I look at the food, berries and bread, and move over to the fire. I sit next to Toby with my food and start to eat. Toby just sits there looking at me. I hate being stared at, it’s even worse being started at out of concern.
“Are you sure you’re okay? That seemed like a really intense dream.” His face looks concerned. He’s getting so grown up.
“Yes, I’m fine. It was not really that bad. Besides I’m back here with you, Freckles.” I smile and rub his head. He nods and slightly smiles back. Then there is silence.
Maliki breaks the silence, “Told you to keep your mind strong. It got you through a dream; let’s hope it doesn’t go after you any other way.” He’s looking dead at me, that softness must have left.
“It? I assure you nothing has ‘got me’, and my mind is very strong. You know what, how about you let me know something, does being turned into a statue make you some kind of know it all, oooh or maybe a mind reader.” I try to be as sarcastic as I can, I’m not in the mood.
He smiles, “No need to get defensive, I’m just trying to help you. But if you think you know better, then don’t listen to me. Ignore my advice. Pretend like everything is alright and you don’t need any help.”
“I don’t need any…”
“It’s getting to be late in the morning, we should head out soon….Is that okay with you?”
My blood boiling, “Yes.” He nods his head and starts packing.
“Oh, and you know that leg that you said was fine, you know the one you limp on, I treated it for you. It should be healing properly now.” His eyes hit mine; I look away out of defiance. When I look back he is walking out of the cave.
Toby approaches me, “Hey Maggie, Maliki’s actually a really nice guy, maybe you should try being a little nicer to him.” He then follows after Maliki.
Great! Now Toby’s against me too. I stretch my back out, and notice there is no pain. I reach my arm as far as I can to gently feel the marks. They are bumps but smooth. I take my hand away and then look at my leg. A small straight mark is all that is left. I look out the cave, they are both standing there talking, waiting for me. So I grab my belt and fasten it around my waist and join them.
