Chapter [28] ATARA
A dream in the dark,
a nightmare that pulls me apart.
Sleeping is always the hardest part
of survival.
It comes once more,
the vicious midnight claw.
Raking across my mind’s door
is the revival:
A trillion stars, a flash of light.
The starry sky disappears from sight.
A ship in deep dark, deep space,
the representatives of the human race
with their eyes on the unknown
a billion miles from home.
“We did it,” I laugh and the control panel sparks.
Someone gasps. “What was that?” Merc asks
The ship swerves dangerously, sways
and I pull it under control, force it to obey.
“Nothing,” I say. “I’ve got it. It’s fine.”
The ship continues forward in a perfect line
and the crew relax into their place
amongst the deeper darker unknown space.
The dream blurs, is changed,
a new scene is arranged:
“This whole time,” says Lilith with gritted teeth,
pinning me against the wall as she seethes.
“You’ve been – toying with us!”
“It was an accident,” I plead
and pray to god that she believes.
She doesn’t. “You’re lying. You have to be.
They’re all completely unaware! But not me.
I will show them what you are,”
she spits. “I will tear…you…apart.”
I wake.
