Apparently, those two scholars were provided by Old Madam Yang

“Bring those two traitors here and execute them by beating to serve as a warning! Let every servant in the house witness the entire event before they leave!” Zhang Ling, normally so generous, had never been so angry before.

The two scholars were gagged and dragged out, only able to plead with their eyes as they looked at Yang Chengbin.

Yang Chengbin wanted to plead for mercy. After all, these two scholars had been with him since he was three years old and had become indispensable companions.

These two are not innocent at all. They were sent with a mission to be by Chengbin’s side from a young age,all to ruin him.

“They led him to gamble, skip school, and insult his teacher, pushing Chengbin into the spotlight of scandal.

Yang Chengbin stood these stunned, as if dazed, swallowing his pleas the moment he heard these words.

Zhang Ling dismissed all the servants around Yang Chengbin

Lin Lei, Lin Tian, you did well this time. Starting this month, your salary is doubled. Keep a close eye on Chengbin for me, Zhang Ling said, and then had someone bring fifty taels of silver as a reward.

Yang Chengbin looked utterly defeated, and Zhang Ling didn’t even glance at him.

“Let all the servants gather outside the Virtuous Hall to witness the execution,” Zhang Ling said with a hint of coldness in his eyes.

As the servants assembled outside the Virtuous Hall, Old Madam Yang was having her meal.

What is this noise outside? How is Zhang Ling managing things? It’s getting out of hand,” she complained.

Now, look at them, the entire Zhang family has been thrown in jail,” Old Madam Yang said with a hint of disdain.

The recent scandal involving a lightning strike had become the talk of the town, and it clearly upset her.

She felt a guilty pleasure knowing the Zhang family had been raided.

Nanny Jiang returned to report, “Old Madam Yang, it appears that the scholars serving Master Chengbin have made a mistake. They are going to have all the household servants witness the punishment.”

After a pause, Nanny Jiang added, “I remember, those two servant boys seemed to have come out from the Virtuous Hall.”

Old Madam Yang’s expression darkened..

Wasn’t this a slap in the face for the Virtuous Hall?

Helping her to her feet, Nanny Jiang led Old Madam Yang out the door.

The servant boys and other servants had already gathered outside, all of them looking somewhat, panicked. They all turned their gazes towards the two scholars tied up in the center.

“What are you causing a fuss about? What wrong have they done to deserve a beating? Do noble families have no regard for human life?” Old Madam Yang demanded, leaning on her cane. Publicly punishing the servants she had provided–what did this mean?

Zhang Ling bowed to Old Madam Yang and responded.

“Mother, these beasts have deceived everyone from above and below, leading Chengbin to gamble and leading him astray.

“They came from the Virtuous Hall, and they were carefully selected by you, Mother, likely deceiving you on purpose. If we do not punish them as a warning to others, wouldn’t everyone think they can deceive you? People might even misunderstand and think you deliberately taught your grandson bad habits,” Zhang Ling said, his face filled with anger.
