Chapter 57
Chapter 57 Dealing with Deception
As Elizabeth spoke, she went around the office desk from behind. If Liam had been observant enough, he would have noticed the layer of sweat on Elizabeth’s forehead.
“Don’t stay in my office for too long when I’m not in it in the future.”
Liam did not suspect what she said at the moment. He was merely stating his orders properly. However, his casual remark sounded different in Elizabeth’s ears. Her body wobbled when she heard it. In the end, it was Liam who swiftly held her by the arm.
“Are you unwell?” Liam asked.
“No, no. It’s just that I didn’t sleep well last night. You can finish your business, Liam, I won’t bother you for now,” Elizabeth said, trying to break free from Liam’s hold. She then ran around to leave.
However, she did not expect the sound of Liam’s voice calling for her from behind, “Elizabeth…”
Elizabeth quietly fiddled with her fingers. She turned around to look at Liam with a forced smile.
“I’ll help you contact someone to do the scar removal surgery. Don’t refuse anymore. This thing has to be done sooner or later,” Seeing Elizabeth’s unmistakable look of refusal Liam immediately interrupted her.
When he looked at her again, she looked even more scared and was about to cry compared to her initial look of guilt. She clearly knew deep down what was wrong with the injury on her arm. However, she did not have the guts to refuse Liam. Instead, she bit her lip and
nodded her head in the end.
Efficient and swift were always Liam’s mode of operation. Just as he confirmed the surgery for Elizabeth, he directly made an appointment
with the doctor and the time of surgery for the scar removal the next day.
While at the company, he looked for Elizabeth and sent her to the hospital himself. In the car, Liam held onto the steering wheel. His other hand rested on the window while his fingers lightly tapped the window sill.
He looked at Elizabeth, who sat shotgun from the corner of his eye and could not help but remember all the messages his subordinate had reported. He had a highly complex feeling about it. After hesitating for a moment, he finally asked, “Elizabeth, do you still remember what happened during the fire back then? How much do you remember?”
Elizabeth, who had a phobia of surgeries, heard Liam mention the fire: her mind was empty.
After hesitating a bit, she turned her head and looked at Liam while giving two light chuckles.
“Liam, that incident had already occurred years ago. I don’t want to think about it again, and just spare me from it.”
She had given a dubious answer. Liam did not speak and did not comment on it. He stared at the road before him, and the color in his eyes grew darker and darker.
After the car arrived at the hospital, the doctor Liam contacted welcomed them in person, “Mr. Luther, Ms. Lisle has to cooperate with us
to do a checkup.”
Liam did not want to explain the purpose of this process. He nodded his head and watched Elizabeth walk into the medical examination
room. During the waiting period, he sat on the bench in the hospital corridor.
He could not relieve himself from the emotions in his heart. Ultimately, he took out his phone and sent Gwyneth a message: [If you were lied to by the person you trusted, what would you do?]
When she received the message, Gwyneth was handling the quarterly accounts at Glen Corporation. She heard the notification ringtone from her phone and furrowed her brows lightly. She unlocked her lock screen and saw the message.
‘How leisurely is this man…‘ She thought.
When she was ranting about him in her mind, she saw the question and could not help but ponder upon it. ‘Being lied to by someone he trusted? So many people have wanted to lie to me for years, but I’ve seen through all of them. Hence, none of them succeeded.”
Her mind drifted further back, and it went to her mother. Her mother had believed in her father back then. She loved her father deeply but ended up with such an ending. She had lost her whole life, as well as her own, for that belief.
When she thought about this, Gwyneth’s eyes immediately turned red, and she bit her lips hard. She swiftly typed on her keyboard, then
hit send. When Liam turned on his phone again, he saw the message Gwyneth sent. There were only four short words: [I would take
revenge.]
He most likely did not expect Gwyneth to reply with such a sentence. The scene of her cooking for him in his mansion came to mind. Her cute and gentle look had no relation to the word revenge for him. You would not have associated either as a person’s appearance and temperament. He took the phone and tapped at the keyboards. After lingering for a while, he deleted it and finally put his phone back in his pocket. Saying anything would be inappropriate and pointless.
At that instant, Liam suddenly felt that his understanding of Gwyneth was pathetically lacking. Besides her abilities and beauty, he knew nothing about what was left.
He dropped his head slightly and closed his eyes. He then let out a light chuckle. The chuckle was more like a cold laugh as if he was mocking himself. He had never thought he would develop inexplicable feelings for a woman he did not understand much.
After half an hour, the body checkup room opened. The doctor brought Elizabeth out and said, “Mr. Luther, Ms. Lisle’s body and skin are fine. The surgery can commence immediately.”
