Chapter 47
Chapter 47 Messy Kitchen
“Sure, let’s be friends,” Gwyneth responded to Liam. She had no intention of pursuing a romantic relationship with him, but if they could be friends, it might not be so bad. With that thought in mind, she looked up at Liam and found him less annoying than before.
Gwyneth’s unequivocal agreement seemed to relax Liam, as if he had let out a sigh of relief. He exhaled deeply and suggested, “Well, it’s getting late, let’s go back.”
Of course. Gwyneth knew exactly what Liam meant by “go back.” She had just agreed to stay with him in the Luther residence for a few more months, so she didn’t want to cause a scene. That is, if Elizabeth wasn’t in the picture.
During the ride, they engaged in casual conversation, mainly discussing the issues surrounding Glen Corporation. Larry was driving and occasionally glanced at them through the rearview mirror, noticing the harmonious atmosphere between the two.
Upon their return to the Luther residence, Liam belatedly realized that there was no one available to cook. Although they had other household staff following the dismissal of the previous housemaid, their responsibilities were clearly defined. Ironically, the housemaid they had let go was the one in charge of preparing dinner on regular days.
Liam furrowed his brows, about to ask Larry to arrange for a five–star chef to cook at the Luther residence. However, Gwyneth intervened before he could ask, “Mr. Luther, it’s just one dinner. There’s no need to complicate things.” She gave him a pointed look before walking into the kitchen.
Within minutes, clattering sounds could be heard from the kitchen. Intrigued, Liam turned and quietly made his way toward the kitchen. Instead of approaching, he leaned against the wall, silently observing Gwyneth from behind.
Gwyneth diligently carried out each step, washing, chopping, and seasoning the ingredients with methodical precision. As Liam observed her, a warm sentiment welled up in his heart, causing his gaze to lose focus. “She’s been by my side for three years. And in that time, I’ve let my opportunity slip away just like that…”
After a while, as Gwyneth turned around to grab some seasonings, she caught sight of the man behind her. She muttered to herself before speaking, “Mr. Luther, since it seems like you have nothing else to do, would you care to lend a hand?”
Those words snapped Liam back to reality. He awkwardly cleared his throat a few times before slowly approaching the cooking counter. While Liam excelled at many things, cooking was certainly not one of his talents. He stared at the array of colorful ingredients and bottles, utterly clueless about how to proceed.
Gwyneth motioned to Liam with a nod, saying, “Scale the fish.” With that, she headed to the restroom. The whole process took less than five minutes, and when she returned, she was utterly dumbfounded.
The once white porcelain tiles on the wall had transformed into a blackened mess. A pot lay overturned on the floor, and Liam stood there, holding a knife in one hand and his other hand empty.
Gwyneth followed Liam’s gaze and saw the fish that he was supposed to handle now resting in the frying pan. She was speechless. unable to find the right words. Her mouth opened, but she was uncertain about how to react.
As Gwyneth approached, Llam had initially planned to explain. “Um… I…” But he couldn’t even fathom where to start explaining how everything had ended up in such a chaotic state.
“Well, I’m relieved I hadn’t turned on the stove earlier.” Gwyneth walked over, picking up a few scattered food ingredients from the floor. and let out a sigh. “Otherwise, I’m pretty sure the kitchen would have exploded.”
“Honey, I…” Liam found the current situation both comical and frustrating. He contemplated trying to lighten the mood for the person standing before him.
However, in the midst of his sentence, Gwyneth approached him without uttering a word. She firmly grasped his apron strings and pulled him out of the kitchen. “You’d better just wait for the meal.”
Gwyneth rolled her eyes to the heavens, and Liam watched her walk away, unable to stifle a soft chuckle. He never imagined that one day his wife would kick him out of the kitchen like this.
After Liam had made a mess during the dinner preparations, Gwyneth found herself compelled to start afresh with the ingredients. It was already dark by the time they finally sat at the lable, looking at the steaming dishes in front of them. It was truly a feat.
As Gwyneth was sipping her soup, Liam’s voice gently broke the silence. “Thank you for your effort, Honey.”
Upon hearing this. Gwyneth couldn’t help revealing a mixture of sarcasm and amusement on her countenance. It was a frustration that led her to wonder if Liam’s actions were intentional a test of sorts.
Liam persisted, his tone laced with thoughtfulness. “Fear not, for I shall promptly seek out a competent cook. However, I implore you to undertake the task of scrutinizing the potential candidates.”
In Liam’s heart, a reluctance to bid farewell to Gwyneth lingered, yet he comprehended the futility of making a direct plea. Seeking at replacement cook provided a valid pretext, particularly considering Gwyneth’s culinary prowess.
However, how many cooks out there would truly impress Gwyneth?
Listening to Liam’s words, Gwyneth nodded in quiet assent, her focus directed toward savoring the flavors of the fish.
