Chapter 41
Chapter 41 Maintaining That Scar
“Gaspard…” Gwyneth hit the play button, and within the first second of the footage, she caught sight of her father, Gaspard Glen.
Wesley stood silently by her side, his expression marked by a sense of solemnity.
A tinge of red flickered in Gwyneth’s eyes, and her hand. resting on the table, gradually clenched into a list as she mustered the patience to keep watching. Only when the video came to an end did she release a deep sigh.
The surveillance camera had been strategically positioned at the entrance of Glen Corporation. In addition to the regular influx of employees, primarily from the marketing department, the video revealed an alarming trend–Gaspard appeared as the most frequent visitor. The fact that Gaspard’s visits exceeded even that of employees responsible for market operations was deeply unsettling. Despite his former CEO status at Glen Corporation, Gaspard still retained his position as a shareholder. In conventional companies, shareholders rarely made personal appearances unless they were essential meetings or year–end events. It was highly unusual for them to make sporadic visits, let alone with such frequency. The abnormality of Gaspard’s visits raised concerns.
Gwyneth pressed the play button and watched the footage again. Deep within her heart, she had already formed a conviction that her own father was the mastermind behind the theft and illicit sale of confidential information. ‘How absurd. He can no longer exert direct power within Glen Corporation, so he’d rather deliberately destroy the company? My mother was the one single–handedly built Glen Corporation. What right does he have to do this? With these thoughts consuming her, Gwyneth’s fist tightened, and her complexion grew pale.
Wesley, standing by, dared not speak or take a step away. That explained his silence from the moment he had handed over the USB drive. If the perpetrator had been anyone else, perhaps it would have been less complicated, but unfortunately, it was Gaspard. It felt as if Gwyneth’s heart was being indirectly pierced once again.
“Boss, you…” Wesley began to speak, but Gwyneth subtly shook her head, signaling him to cease.
“There are things that I won’t forget. But this person insists on reminding me once again. How can I let him down?” Gwyneth uttered the final words through gritted teeth, a subtle metallic taste lingering in her mouth.
Meanwhile, at Luther Corporation, ever since Elizabeth took on the role of Llam’s secretary, she effortlessly found reasons to enter Liam’s office without any resistance from his PA. With confidence radiating from her every step, she strode into Liam’s office as if she owned the place.
At that moment, Liam was in his office, engaged in a video call. The individual on the other end happened to be the person he had assigned to investigate the long–past fire incident. As the conversation neared its conclusion, a sudden knock echoed on the office door. Liam swiftly exchanged a glance with the person on the video call. With a slight nod of acknowledgment, that person politely terminated the call.
As Liam looked up, he saw Elizabeth entering the room. A faint smile adorned her face as she held a cup of coffee in her hand. “Liam, Mr. Ley mentioned that you’ve been busy all morning. I was concerned that you’ve been intensely focused for too long, so I took the liberty of making you some coffee,” she said.
“Thank you,” Liam replied softly, shifting his gaze back to the documents.
“Liam, the coffee won’t taste as good if it gets cold…” Elizabeth attempted to engage in conversation, searching for something to say. However, it was precisely because she was babbling in Liam’s ear that Liam suddenly remembered his conversation in the video call just now. He then said to her, “By the way, since you’re here, there’s something I wanted to ask you.”
As Elizabeth heard Liam’s words, her heart swelled with joy, and she quickly took a seat across from him, eager for the opportunity to engage in conversation. She had always dreamed of having a few more words with him. However, as soon as Liam began speaking, her heart dropped with a sudden jolt.
“Elizabeth, how much do you remember about the specifics of that fire incident from years ago?
Elizabeth lifted her gaze, taken aback by the sudden mention of the incident. Her hands fidgeted beneath the table, nervously intertwining with each other. Eventually, she managed to muster a smile and spoke softly. “It’s been so many years, and my memory of it is hazy. I can only recall the pain of the wound I sustained during that time.”
The truth was, Elizabeth would occasionally intentionally burn her own arm to maintain that scar. Despite the excruciating pain, she endured it so she could continue to hold on to Liam.
As Elizabeth finished speaking, Liam frowned and rose from his seat, circling around the table to stand beside Elizabeth.
He reached out and delicately grasped her wrist, slowly rolling up her long sleeve. Just as the unsightly scar was about to be revealed. Elizabeth unexpectedly pulled her arm away from his grasp. She swiftly stood up, her eyes already welling up with tears, her voice trembling as she spoke.
“Liam, I get it. You’re still holding on to what happened in the past. But there’s no need to torment yourself by constantly dwelling on it.” she said, rolling her sleeve back into place. If someone paid close attention, they could even detect a slight tremor in her lingers. “It’s behind us now. I don’t regret saving you! If I had to relive that moment, I would make the same decision!”
