The Sovereign Heir (Book 1)

Chapter 9 March 2020 Flashback

Ashton was glaring at me the entire time I was preparing my notes before leaving class. As I looked up this son of a bitch smirked at me, what a clueless turd, I wasn’t even showing him any interest. Gathering my belongings to leave the room, Professor Morgan called me back to discuss my paper. I know I don’t produce sub-par grades and this request was unusual.

“Ms. Renaud, I wanted to discuss your paper before midterms approach. I think it should be published in the American Journal of Psychology; with your permission I would like to enter it into submission. I know your track is in medical science versus applied science, but you may want to consider a secondary career in psychology. Your examination into the psyche of soldiers post war is something that can take PTSD treatment in a new direction.”

Little does he know, the subject for my paper was based on my personal experiences. I hesitantly agreed, ”I think that would be fine Professor Morgan. Just let me know if it gets published.” I walked to my apartment parallel to the school, heading into my building. Surprisingly, the hallway was empty, checking the time to see if I could get a run in before dinner. All my assignments were ahead of schedule. Before I could get my keys in the door, I smelled Ashton. He tried to grab me from behind, I spun around to my right dropping my bag and taking a defensive stance after elbowing him in his side. This gave me the distance I wanted as he stumbled back. “What do you think you’re doing? You must have a death wish coming up behind me like that!”

“I saw you look at me today in class, you seemed… interested.” He had this sick grin on his face. “Fuck outta here. I am most certainly not interested, actually if anything I feel pure disgust. I don’t want you. Never have and never will want you. I’d rather eat cat shit than touch you or even let you touch me!”

“Such a nasty mouth on you, Princess. I wonder what else that mouth can do?” Ashton is trying to close the space between us. If I snapped his neck, so be it. Nikki opened our apartment door, “Ashton, what are you doing here? Don’t you have a study session to get to? You’ve failed statistics twice, a third time and you’re off the team, you better get going?”

“Oh, I was just popping by to see my favorite sister and Elaina”

“Ash, I’m your only sister, so beat it before I call daddy and tell him you’re fucking up again.” He had the most annoyed face and slowly left. “Girl, what was all that about, is my brother still crushing on you? He needs to give that up and get with his destined mate. The moon goddess doesn’t have time for Ashton’s constant whoring.”

“I really don’t know what’s wrong with him. It’s still shocking you have the same parents. I’d swear he was adopted the way he acts. He is nothing like Renee and Ken. If he didn’t look like both of them, I’d swear he was a changeling.”

“My Dad’s jet-black hair and Mom’s hazel eyes can’t be denied.” Nikki just shrugs. “He is an anomaly; I asked our mom was he adopted a few times. She chased me out of her office with her flip flop in hand, glad she didn’t toss it. The Caribbean aim is no joke!”

Ken and Renee met way back when in Chicago, she was one of the few people of color allowed to attend. Her family was from Puerto Rico and were a blend of Taino, Spanish and African descent. Between 1870 and 1940 only a mere 45 people of color were allowed to attend the University of Chicago, which was more than any university that wasn’t designated as a HBCU.

They didn’t desegregate until 1962, Ken and Renee had long since graduated by the time that happened. It was very challenging to say the least for them dating during such horrible times. One thing neither of them had to worry about was discrimination within the supernatural world. No one cared what color you were, it was solely pack and supe politics that created issues.

That was one thing that we never understood about humans. Why does someone’s skin color or country of origin make them good or bad. It was what they did and how they treated people that truly counted. We were a far cry from our former glory cooperating with human communities. Outside of their governments, we tried our best not to mingle.

Nikki and I reminisced about the times Renee used to chase us out of the pack galley after we stole cookies, she nearly caught us with her flip flop a few times, it would be flying in the air right at us upon exiting. If I didn’t dodge, dragging Nikki with me, that flip flop would have connected with our backs.

They were such fun times until Ashton would come harass us or he would try and dry snitch on us because we didn’t want him playing with us. We tried to play with him several times. He would just get mad and knock over our game board or knock down our Legos. He was even a little asshole back them. How he found that to be an attractive quality was beyond me.

I’m still baffled how anyone of the supe females put up with it. He must have phenomenal oral skills. That is the only thing I could come up with to justify how all those girls fawned over him. His personality alone made him ugly.

“And you’re absolutely certain he isn’t adopted?” I asked her.

“I wish he was adopted, trust me unfortunately he isn’t. He is going to be a terrible Alpha. There isn’t enough time and teaching to make him suitable for leadership. If you ask me he couldn’t even be a gamma with how sloppy and arrogant he is.”

And with that we both sighed continuing eating our cookies aunt Renee sent us.
