The Sovereign Heir (Book 1)

Chapter 55 Deep Dive

The last thing I remember before I fell asleep, is being held by Nolan on my side. Him telling me when he noticed my two heart beats the first night I spent here. He thought he was imagining it. Before I knew it, I am thrust back into the last battle. Unlike before, everyone was dead. It was just me against them all. I took them down, feeling myself enjoying it. The child begged me to help and I just laughed sadistically. “You should beg for my mercy instead.”

I lurch forward drenched in sweat and breathing heavily. Nolan wraps his arm around my waist, tugging me back to lay down. “It was just a dream and nothing more. You could never be like them. Darkness and light go hand in hand. You are balanced, you love deeply and will always be that way no matter what.”

He kisses my shoulder, the mate bond bringing me a much needed sense of peace. What if he is wrong and I’m not balanced and just one second away from being worse than the monster I am supposed to stop? “You aren’t and never will be.” Did he just read my thoughts? “Not exactly, it’s like I get a glimpse of your thought and your feelings. I can’t quite read minds like you. I guess not yet anyway. Tell me what you’re thinking.”

“My physiology is unique to say the least. That is why my family stayed in the field of medicine and science for generations. To keep our secrets hidden. My DNA can heal and also be weaponized in the right host. I don’t want to be like Allister and I don’t want to be the cause of something even worse unintentionally.”

Nolan laid quiet for a while for what seems like forever. I felt him coming to terms with what I said. He kisses the top of my head. “If I have anything to say about it, I will do everything in my power to make sure it doesn’t.”

Let the Celebrations Begin

Nolan’s gauntlet changed into a totem bracelet the night I gave it to him. We stood in the far end of the Palace Thursday morning. Yana leaps through once she saw us. “You’re sure our phones will work and we don’t need any charges?”

“No, I already told you. We have kept up with human technology. Despite the realm being in another dimension, we have access to the internet, power and all the modern conveniences here, if not more. Stop worrying, if anything happens while we are gone, we will have access to our messages and emails.”

“Is this going to be like when you orbed me?”

Nolan looks so nervous, reliving his first experience with orbing. “Stop being a baby. You’re a Lycan, a Lycan prince at that, you’ll be fine.”

I take his hand, squeezing it for reassurance. The portal opened and I slowly walk him through. Nolan’s eyes are as bright as a kid on Christmas morning. “Wow, Pegasus’! I thought they were extinct along with unicorns.”

“There is more here than just that. When these creatures were being hunted to the point of extinction by our kind and even humans, the remaining were herded to the realm. They have thrived and evolved alongside us. Just not in plain sight. The few sightings over the past few centuries are a handful that mistakenly found an exit to portal out. We round them up pretty quickly.”

He laughs, “Well, Love, to most humans we are a myth too.”

“I’m going to give you a better explanation to what happened to divide us. The primeval destroyed the tree of origin. The only fruit blooming Persea to ever exist at the time. There are 12 original we all descend from and there were others throughout the world who came after them in different regions, all united in the same goal. We cohabitated and collaborated with the humans peacefully for a very long time. That is why many cultures share the same historically significant architecture, gods, creation stories and similar mythical creatures. All under different names.”

Nolan thought and shares what he was taught incorrectly, “See, that’s what differs from what we are told as children. They never told us there were others in addition to the first 12 or we got along with humans. It was always told as us against them.”

I explain to him even further, “There is always some jaded version of our history based on what species tells it. And I’m sure Lycans are the most skewed since you guys are technically the villain of the past.”

Nolan looks around with excitement in his eyes, “Never in my 118 years, would I fathom how beautiful the realm is. I’m grateful to be worthy enough to be your mate and to experience this.” He rubs my cheek with the back of his hand. I let Nolan take everything in. A kobold named Azure approaches us.

Azure bows, “Your majesty.”

Bowing in return, “Sir Azure, always a pleasure.”

Azure’s gritty voice caught Nolan’s attention, causing him to turn around. “Your majesty, Prince Nolan. It is an honor to finally meet you.”

“A pleasure to meet you as well.” My mate bows in return.

Azure held a box in his hand. I knew exactly what it contained. This would be the best gift I could give Michelle and Lennox. “Thank you, Azure, your craftsmanship is impeccable.” I place a kiss on the top of Azure’s head, making him blush before he scurries away. As I turn to look at Nolan, he had a tight line to his lips. I raise my eyebrows at his clear dislike of my platonic affection, “Jealous are we?”

“It is only natural for a Lycan to be jealous of any affection given to another male outside of family. Besides, he is no competition. The beast in me still doesn’t like it.” I bust out laughing, Nolan rolls his eyes at me and sucks his teeth.

“Aww, don’t be like that, you are always number one to me.” He reluctantly let me pull him into a hug, giving in finally.

“What’s in the box?”, Nolan asks.

“Wedding gift for the happy couple.”, I tell him.
