The Silver Siren

Chapter 35

“Lucien got sloppy,” I smirked at her, “Why are you helping him? What’s in it for you?”

“You are well versed in the wishes of the Moon Goddess and her mate pairing. Although us witches do not look to her directly as a guiding light, we are, every once in a while, pair bonded with other supernatural creatures.”

“Wait,” I said, digesting what she said, “Are you saying that you are his mate?”

“Of course,” she boasted, “and soon he and I will rule the werewolf world together.”

“Is that possible? Can werewolves be mated to witches?” I asked Melissa by mind link, not quite believing what the dark witch was telling me. It seemed ridiculous.

“Yes, it is possible, but extremely rare,” she said.

The door behind us suddenly slammed shut, pushing Penny out into the corridor. I heard the lock click and Penny tried to open the door.

“Allie!” I heard Penny cry, banging on the door in frustration.

“Let us out,” I said, firmly.

“Oh, you know I can’t do that, siren. Any moment now the Alpha mutt will be dead, and you will be too weak to defend yourself or your pack,” she cackled, “And our plan will be complete!” Her laughter echoed around the room.

Melissa raided her satchel, smashing several vials on the ground in quick succession. The dark witch realised what she was doing and waved her hand in the air as a mixture of light and sparks swirled up from the floor. It enveloped the potions, swallowing them up and reducing their power to a mere cloud of white smoke.

The dark witch smirked, “This will be easier than I thought.”

“Get behind me, Allie,” Melissa mind linked me.

“No. We do this together,” I said, vehemently.

“Your power is nothing compared to mine, white witch!” she boomed. She raised both her arms above her head and the room darkened.

A dark cloud gathered above us and rumbled loudly. Melissa countered it by raising her hands and trying to push it back towards the dark witch. But it swirled around gathering momentum.

“This isn't working!” Melissa mind linked me. She was right. It was beginning to look like a mini storm, angry swirling vortices of energy building up, when it suddenly spat out a lightning bolt that crashed down toward the dark witch. The dark witch caught it in her hand as if it were a baseball. She manipulated it skilfully and laughed maniacally as she threw the lightning bolt at us.

Without really thinking, I produced a small force field in my hand and threw it up in front of us, flattening it out to create a shield. The lightning bolt hit the shield and bounced off and flew back the way it came, heading straight for the witch. She dodged it and quickly caught another bolt. She launched it at us again, so I moved the force field out further and increased its energy. The lightening bolt hit the force field again and bounced back again, sending shards spiralling through the air. It happened with such speed, the dark witch had no time to react, and the lightning bolt struck her in the chest. Shards of light shot out as it hit her, and she screamed and fell to the ground.

The energy from the lightning bolt dissipated and the clouds had all but gone and darkness engulfed the room. Melissa said “illuminate” and light returned to the room. The dark witch lay still on the ground.

I heard a click as the door unlocked and Penny burst through the door. She looked frantically around the room trying to figure out what happened.

“Whoa,” said Penny, “What just happened?”

“Um, I think I created a shield with a force field. It reflected the witch's power back to her.” I said, “Are you ok, Melissa?”

“Yes, sweetheart, I’m fine,” she said, “Your powers have grown.”

“Well, that was supposed to be a force field, but I panicked and it somehow managed to change into a shield. It went a bit wrong, but worked in the end, I guess,” I said, shrugging my shoulders.

“Your abilities far exceed anything that I could ever have imagined,” she said, walking over to the dark witch. She bent down and looked at the witch closely. She sighed, “She’s dead.”

“We have to find the Alpha,” she said, “Now that the dark witch is dead, her magic dies with her. Lucien will no longer be able to control the rogues with her dark magic.”

“Let’s go, then,” I said, turning and walking quickly to the door.

“Melissa,” Brad mind linked, “We have an injured warrior.”

“I’m on my way, Beta,” she replied, “Please let all the warriors know that the dark witch is dead. Her magic will no longer be controlling the rogues to kill.”

“Will do,” he said.

She turned to me and said, “I’ll be back with you as soon as I can. Stay safe, my darling. You too, sweetie,” she said to Penny, and orbed out.

“Come on,” I said to Penny, “We need to find Reece.” We jogged down the corridor and were about halfway down it when a rogue pounced out from a side room. Penny instantly shifted and intercepted the rogue. They circled each other and growled.

“Go find Reece, I’ve got this,” she told me. I didn’t want to leave her on her own, dealing with this rogue, but I could feel my bond with Reece getting weaker. I was running out of time.

“Ok,” I said, “Remember, the rogues aren’t being controlled by any dark magic now. Be safe.” I quickly moved past them reluctantly. I ran down the rest of the corridor looking in all the rooms for Reece.

“Mate!” Lana suddenly yelled, “Mate is here!” I breathed in deeply and caught a faint scent of sweet, blissful lemonade.

I followed the scent and came across a bunch of doors right at the end of the corridor. I breathed in again, but the scent was still faint. I had no idea which room he was in, so I started opening up doors and checking each room. The first one was empty. So was the second and the third until soon, there was only one left.

I slowly opened it and stepped inside. The room was dark, and it took a few seconds for my eyes to adjust. Once they did, I saw Reece chained to the wall, shackles on each wrist. His body hung there, lifeless. I ran over.

“Reece, wake up!” I cried, “Please wake up!” he didn’t move. I had to get these shackles off him. I summoned a mini force field, the size of a golf ball, and shot it at the wall where the shackles were attached. The chains exploded off the wall and fell to the ground, and Reece slumped to the floor. I eased him down and touched his face. It was cool to the touch and his skin looked pale. I laid my head on his chest and could thankfully hear his heart beating slowly. He was still alive, but his breathing was quiet and shallow.

“Melissa,” I mind linked, “I need you.” A few seconds later, a bright light filled the room and she orbed in, surveying the scene. She clicked her fingers and the room lit up so I could see him better.

“We need to get him the antidote now,” I said to her, “Can you take him back to the hospital?”

“Of course,” she said, kneeling down next to him, “The Doctor is standing by with the antidote, ready to administer.”

I breathed a sigh of relief. I had better tell Brad.

“Brad,” I mind linked.

“Yes, Luna,” he replied.

“I’ve found Reece. Melissa is ready to take him back to the hospital.”

“Oh, thank the Moon Goddess. Where’s Penny?” he asked, “Is she still with you?”

“No, she stopped to deal with a rogue that ambushed us,” I said.

“What?! Is she ok? I need to find her,” he cried, panicking. “Do you need me for anything else right now, Luna?”

“No, Brad. Go find her. We will regroup once you’ve found her so we can search for Lucien with the council.”

“Sure. They are waiting to take him into custody once we’ve found him,” he said.

“Ok,” I said, and ended the mind link.

“Ready?” Melissa asked, holding on to Reece’s arm.

“What’s the hurry, siren?” a low voice snarled.

Penny

“Go find Reece, I’ve got this,” I told her. It was critical that she find him before it was too late. I could deal with this rogue. Allie had been teaching me everything she knows about combat and I knew I could do it. I wasn't going to be a victim anymore.

He was bigger than me, but that didn’t mean he was going to win. The dark witch was dead, so this wolf wasn’t being controlled by dark magic. But he was still a rogue, an outlaw. He would still fight to the death for his survival. He growled, baring his teeth at me, and we circled each other. He lunged at me but faked a move and spun quickly around and swiped at the top of my front leg with his claws. Luckily it was just a flesh wound. I licked at it quickly to wipe away the blood.

I would have to up my game if I wanted to come out of this alive. I kept low and waited for him to pounce again. Soon enough he advanced again and, keeping low, I waited until he was close enough and pounced up almost underneath him, knocking him off balance. He stumbled backwards, almost falling to the ground. I took my chance and locked my jaws around his front leg near his shoulder, sinking my teeth in deep until I could taste his blood. He yelped and whimpered in pain. I bit down harder and heard his shoulder joint pop out of the socket. I released him and, no longer under the dark witch’s spell, he retreated. He limped away hastily on three legs, and I let him go. I knew from personal experience what this rogue had been through under Lucien’s control. He deserved a chance at freedom.

Pleased with myself for neutralising the rogue and also sparing his life, I took a moment to take in my surroundings before I went in search of Allie. The stench of rogues oozed out from every corner, every crevice. My life was so different now that it was hard to believe I was ever a rogue. Focusing on the mission had helped me block out the horror of being imprisoned here. But now, the memories of those heinous months were creeping back into my head. I had spent the best part of a month trying to heal, physically and mentally, but being back here again was terrifying.

I turned to follow the path that Allie had taken to find Alpha Reece. As I turned a corner I heard the sound of footsteps approaching behind me, and a strong waft of rogue scent filled the air. Oh great, another one. I turned around to face the rogue ready to fight.

Standing less that fifty feet from me, was a rogue in human form. I recognised him immediately, his scarred face and slicked back hair was unmistakable. I froze. I was still in wolf form, so he didn’t know who I was. All he knew from my scent was that I wasn’t a rogue, I belonged to a pack.

He was holding a huge, black crossbow, arrogantly resting it on his broad shoulder. I wanted to run but my legs were glued to the spot with fear, and I couldn’t move.

I had to do something. I was just a sitting target at the moment. It was either fight him or run. My wolf, Indie, broke through my thoughts and snapped me out of it.

“Come on, girl. We gotta go!” she urged.

“Yep!” I managed to say back.

“Run, Penny!” she cried.
