Chapter 30
It had been about a month since the Alpha and Luna ceremony, and I had settled into life at the pack house well. I saw Melissa regularly which I was happy about. She had been working extremely hard on a bunch of potions and spells for protection from dark magic and to fight Lucien with. She was pulling out all the stops and her dedication was amazing.
Reece had also been working flat out trying to find Lucien, spending long days leading search parties out to search for Lucien’s hideout. Melissa had mentioned that it was most likely being hidden by his dark witch, but he remained undeterred, hunting for the smallest of clues. He wouldn’t let up. When he wasn’t out with the search parties, he was training in the gym. I had barely seen him and was getting a little worried that he would burn out.
I’d also been pretty busy. The plans for the new gym were coming along nicely, with help from Penny, and we had found a suitable property that we could transform into a gym and sports centre for children. Reece was supportive of my plans had encouraged me to start working on the gym not long after the ceremony.
I had been training Penny too, which was so much fun, and gave me a chance to keep my own skills brushed up. She had recovered well, not 100% yet but she finally had a healthy glow. She had put on weight, and she was now lean and toned. And she turned out to be a pretty good fighter too. We had grown close helping each other get better. I had been practising with my powers and had come a long way since my birthday. I now felt in total control. I could now confidently control my force field and its size and movements. I hadn’t released a large one yet because it was far too dangerous and is only to be used as a last resort defending yourself. But Penny and I had had fun setting up old tin can targets and seeing if I could knock them down by ‘throwing’ a mini force field at them. My accuracy got quite good, and it was great fun.
Thankfully, Penny had worked things out with Brad, and they were now marked and mated. She was now a fully-fledged member of the pack. Brad had also been out leading search parties and extra training sessions, and neither of us had seen much of our mates recently.
Lily had been great and had been helping me learn how to be a good Luna, teaching me how the pack operates, and, with her help, I had relaxed into a routine of pack chores, paperwork and training. We had grown close, and I was sad to wave her and Spencer off on their vacation to Japan last week.
Today, though, I had to cut training short. When I woke up this morning, I didn’t feel quite right. Just before lunchtime, I started to get a headache. Maybe I was over doing things recently. Penny and I had been so busy with everything we’ve got going on at the moment. It was just a niggle at first, but it had grown in intensity as the morning went on and now it was throbbing away annoyingly. Penny was concerned so suggested we go back to the pack house so I could rest.
So that’s what we are doing right now, walking back to the pack house bathed by the warm sunshine of the midday sun. We were almost there when my vision began to blur. The pain in my head was unbelievable. I reached out for Penny’s arm, and she stopped immediately.
“Allie?” she asked, “What’s wrong?” She had turned to face me and was gripping my forearms to steady me.
“I don’t know,” I whispered, “My head hurts so much.”
“I’ll get some help,” she said, “I’ll mind link Brad.”
My legs felt weak, like they were made of jelly, and didn’t seem to be able to support my weight. I swayed as I gripped on to Penny, and a rushing sound in my ears was the last thing I heard before everything went black.
Penny.
Before I knew it, she was on the ground. I was still holding her forearms and was able to guide her weight down as she lost consciousness.
“Brad!!” I cried desperately over mind link. “Allie has collapsed! We are on the training centre pathway. I need help. Hurry, please!”
“Oh, shit! It’s ok, baby. We are on the way to you! Hang in there!” he said trying to calm me down.
“What do I do? She won’t wake up!” I cried, tears streaming down my face.
“We are about 10 minutes away. Can you try and mind link Doc Stevens? He will be closer to you than we are tight now,” he suggested.
“But I’ve only ever mind linked you!”
“I know, baby. But you have to try. You can do it; I know you can. Keep calm. I’ll be there soon. I love you” he said and ended the mind link.
He was right. I had to do something. I looked around frantically but couldn’t see anyone around. I was going to have to try to mind link the Doc. I took a deep breath and closed my eyes, holding Allie in my arms, my hands shaking. I focused hard on the doctor and a few seconds later I heard, “Hello? Penny? Is that you?”
“Doctor Stevens?” I asked, not quite believing that I had done it.
“Yes dear. Is everything ok?”
“It’s Allie. We were walking back to the pack house, and she passed out. Please help,” I begged.
“I’m on my way, dear. What is your location?” he asked.
“We are on the track from the training centre, about 300 meters from the pack house,” I said, knowing there was only one track from the training centre.
“Ok, is she breathing?” he asked. I saw the rhythmic movement of her chest rising and falling.
“Yes!” I said.
“Good, now just keep checking her breathing and I will be there in about three minutes,” he said and ended the mind link.
I brushed the hair away from her face. Her skin looked pale. We had grown close over the past few weeks, and she was now one of the most important people in my life. She cared about me when no one else did. Silent tears continued to glide down my cheeks softly.
I gently shook her shoulders, “Allie, please wake up,” I begged. She didn’t move. I picked up her lifeless hand.
“Allie,” I tried again, gently tapping her hand. This time her head moved slightly. Thank the Moon Goddess, she was waking up! I held her closely, stroking her hand as she stirred.
I saw Doc Stevens come into view on the track and felt relief wash over me. He had a nurse with him who was pushing a gurney. They quickly reached us.
“What happened?” he asked.
“We were training, but Allie she had a headache so we started walking back to the pack house so she could rest. She passed out while we were walking back,” I told him, as calmly as I could.
“Ok, dear,” he said, checking Allie’s vital signs. He and the nurse did some other checks and he said, “She is not in any immediate danger, Penny. She will be ok, but we’ll take her to the hospital to run some further tests and give her some fluids. You did well looking after her, dear.”
I wiped the remaining tears from my face with my sleeve, and saw that Allie was opening her eyes. She blinked a few times and slowly turned her head to face me.
“Penny,” she said weakly.
“I’m here,” I reassured her.
“What happened?” she asked, barely making any noise.
“You said the pain in your head was bad, and then you passed out,” I told her. She blinked again and licked her lips. Then she tried to get up.
“Hold on, Luna,” said the Doc, “Let’s get you on the gurney.”
“Oh, I don’t need that. I feel fine now,” she said.
“Lean against me then, and sit up slowly,” I suggested, looking at the Doc as he nodded his agreement. I positioned myself close to Allie and helped her sit up, wrapping my arms around her and sitting on the ground behind her, so she could lean on me. The Doc took her blood pressure.
“Your blood pressure is quite low, Luna,” he said, “That might be the reason you passed out. But I’d like to run some further tests to be sure.”
“Urgh, you know I hate hospitals, Doc,” she said, smiling weakly. He chuckled softly.
“I remember very well, Luna. But I’m sure you, and the Alpha, will agree that it’s better to be safe than sorry,” he said.
“Hmm, I suppose you’re right,” she sighed.
“Luna, I don’t want you to try and stand just yet. You may pass out again if you do. Nurse Jess and I will lift you onto the gurney,” he told her.
“Ok,” she agreed, her skin looking pale.
“I’ll help too,” I offered. I got into position near her left leg and hooked my arms underneath. When everyone was ready, we simultaneously lifted her off the ground and on to the soft comfort of the gurney. I helped the nurse cover her with a blanket.
I stopped and quickly mind linked Brad to tell him what was going on.
“Brad, the Doc is here, and we are taking Allie to the hospital wing. Meet us there,” I said.
“Ok, baby,” he said briefly. I knew he was running so kept it short.
I caught up with the gurney and within a few minutes we were at the hospital wing. She was wheeled into a private room and the nurses got her settled. The doctor drew a vial of her blood and left to send it to the lab as the nurse set up an IV for some fluids to help stabilise her blood pressure. The colour had started to come back into her cheeks, but she still looked weak and tired, dark shadows visible under her eyes.
The Doc came back into the room. “Luna, have you been eating properly recently? He asked.
“Erm, I guess so,” she said, “I haven’t really had much of an appetite, though.”
“Your blood pressure has stabilised now,” he confirmed, “We’ll keep monitoring you until we get the results back. Shouldn’t be more than half an hour.”
The doors suddenly crashed open, and Brad and Reece rushed in. Reece dashed straight over to Allie and Brad scooped me into his strong arms and held me close, allowing the mate bond to calm me. I buried my face in his neck and breathed in his heavenly scent.
“Are you ok?” he asked.
“Yeah,” I breathed, “I’m ok now.”
“You mind linked the Doc?” he asked.
I nodded shyly. His face broke into a grin. “Good job, baby. I knew you could do it.” His lips met mine and nothing else mattered for those few seconds.
Reece was busy showering kisses on Allie and making sure she was ok. He squeezed her so tight she made a little squeaking sound.
“What happened?” he asked when he finally released her. He looked to me for an answer. I still found him a little intimidating, but I managed to find my voice.
“She passed out on the way back from the training centre,” I said, shakily. The Doc interjected to help fill in the blanks.
“The Luna’s blood pressure was low, Alpha. We are waiting on results from a blood test to check for any underlying issues, but she has responded well to the fluids and her blood pressure is now stabilised.”
A nurse entered and handed the Doc a clipboard. “Ah, here are the results now,” he said, taking the file from the nurse and flicking through the pages of the report.
“I see,” he said slowly, “I think we have found the cause.”
“We’ll give you guys some privacy,” Brad said and led me out of the room quickly. I wanted to know what was wrong with Allie, but I guess Brad was right. I just hope she is ok.
Allie.
“What happened?” Reece demanded, looking to Penny for an answer. She was still a little nervous around males and I saw her shrink back a little. I held Reece’s hand to let the mate bond calm him. Penny recovered quickly and bravely found her voice.
“She passed out on the way back from the training centre,” she told him.
Doctor Stevens explained further and said, “The Luna’s blood pressure was low, Alpha.
“We’ll give you guys some privacy,” and led a pouting Penny out of the room.
“So what’s the problem?” asked Reece, when Brad and Penny had left the room.
“Well,” said the Doc, smiling, “It seems that the Luna is pregnant.”
“What!” I blurted out loudly. Louder than I had intended or wanted. I wasn’t exactly expecting the Doc to say that!
“The blood test confirmed it Luna, but we will do an ultrasound to check everything is going well in a few days. I also recommend taking some vitamin supplements. I will ask Nurse Jess to give you some to take home,” he said.
What was happening? How could I be pregnant? Then I remembered that I was in heat a few weeks ago. This can’t be happening. I’m only 18, too young to have pups.
“Congratulations,” I heard the Doc say as he left the room.
I looked over at Reece. He looked crestfallen at my reaction.
“Are you ok?” he said, quietly. I didn’t know what to say. I had no words right now. I was utterly stunned. This was unexpected.
“I…” I started, but no words followed. I sighed and sunk back onto the pillow. “I’m sorry,” I said, honestly. I was screwing this up. This wasn’t how I wanted this to go.
He smiled and kissed my forehead. “It’s ok, sweetie. You don’t have anything to apologise for,” he said softly , “Neither of us was expecting the Doc to say that.”
