Chapter 27
“Get away from me,” I roared as I shoved her out the door, “This is your final warning, Mikayla. Stay away from me and stay away from Allie.” I slammed the door in her face with a loud thud that echoed through the lobby. Luckily it was still early for many people, and the lobby was empty. I turned and stalked my way up the stairs to my room. By the time I got there, I was still pretty steamed. Why was this bugging me so much? Was she right? Sure, she was annoying and clingy and stupid enough to think I would reject my Luna for her. But what she said about Allie was really bothering me and I couldn’t shake it off. It would be foolish to ignore the reason why sirens were pushed to the brink of extinction.
Were they dangerous? Their powers were truly unique, unmatched in the werewolf community, and they were powerful. Did Lucien want to wipe out the sirens for his own interests, or were sirens a real threat to other wolves? I didn’t know the answer to any of these questions and I knew I wouldn’t be able to let go of this anger until I had some answers. I decided to ask my Dad about it.
I headed to his office. I passed the library on my way. It wouldn’t hurt to do a little research of my own either, so I opened the door and located the section I needed. After several hours trawling through ancient texts and dusty scripts, I was drowning in books, scrolls and papers. I was looking for anything that could explain if sirens were dangerous or evil, but all I found was extracts and passages confirming what we all thought; sirens were peaceful creatures. One text describes sirens as incapable of using their powers for evil; even suggesting that the Moon Goddess bestows special gifts on sirens preventing any evil actions. It seemed to say that if you were gifted with the powers of a siren, you no longer have the ability to act in any way evil. Their powers were only to be used for good or self defence. It’s basically written in their DNA. So I had an answer. I started to clear away the books and scrolls, and an article caught my eye. It was about Lucien’s attempt to wipe out the sirens. It was quite a scandal when it came to light and was well documented in this article. The Elder Council were embarrassed that so much was kept under their radar for so long and by the time his actions were uncovered, he had wiped out thousands of sirens, almost the entire population. His use of dark magic was a principle theme in the texts. Dark magic is rare, white witches far outnumber dark witches, and dark magic is illegal in werewolf law. It was speculated that he had formed an alliance with a powerful dark witch and was able to infiltrate other packs with her help.
My head was starting to throb. I closed rest of the books and replaced them on the shelves, leaving the library and heading to Dad’s office, taking the article with me. It was shocking to learn the details of Lucien’s attack on the siren population. I now had a better understanding of Melissa’s decision to hide Allie and raise her as a regular werewolf. If she hadn’t used her magic to conceal Allie, the likelihood of her surviving was almost zero.
I found my dad out on the terrace having coffee. He was surrounded by papers and was typing on his laptop and when he spotted me, he smiled. He not only had pack matters to deal with, but he was also head of a huge hotel chain that we own. When I become Alpha, he wants to focus more on the hotels, so I won’t be taking over the family business just yet.
“Hey Dad,” I said.
“Hi son. How’s things going? How is our beautiful future Luna doing?” he asked, pulling out a chair for me to sit.
“It’s going ok, I guess,” I said. He didn’t look convinced and reached for the coffee pot and poured me one.
“Tell me what’s bothering you?” he said, calmly.
As I told him everything, he nodded and listened intently. When I had finished unloading, he said “At the time of the mass extinction, Lucien created fear among the werewolf community until sirens were no longer safe among us. You have researched well, Reece, and what you have read about sirens is true. They are peaceful creatures, not capable of acting in any way evil intentionally.”
It made me feel better knowing for sure that sirens were peaceful. Deep down, I knew Allie would never hurt me, but what Mikayla said had rattled me. If she made others believe that Allie was dangerous to our community, history was in danger of repeating itself. The entire pack would be fearful of their new Luna. I had to make sure that didn’t happen.
“The preparations for the ceremony are coming along nicely. But I think we should keep Allie’s true identity to ourselves for the time being. Ranked pack members and hospital staff should be the only werewolves to know. Until Lucien can be neutralised, we need to keep her as safe as possible and can’t risk word spreading of her existence and reaching Lucien,” he said.
“Agreed,” I said, “I believe we are getting closer, and preparations are being made with the Elders to formulate a plan once he is taken into custody.”
“Good,” he said smiling, “You’ve obviously got it all under control, son.”
“Thanks,” I said, “Anything I can help with?” nodding towards the pile of papers.
“Sure. Grab these” he said, handing me some of them. We spent a few hours catching up on pack business. I realised I hadn’t heard from Allie for a few hours, since I mind linked her briefly after her run. She was on her way to meet Melissa for her lesson.
“Hey, you ok honey?” I mind linked her.
“Hi,” she said, “Yeah, I’m fine. Just finishing up with Melissa.”
“Ok, sweetie,” I said, “Meet me in our room when you’re done?”
“Sure,” and she ended the mind link.
As I made my way to our room, I couldn’t help but notice that the pack house was a flurry of activity. People bustling here and there. The kitchen staff were in full swing preparing for the banquet that follows the ceremony. Housekeepers were dusting and vacuuming everywhere, and party supplies were arriving hourly. It was great to see the pack so excited. They had been waiting for me to find my mate almost as long as I had and now that I had found their new Luna, the whole pack was jubilant. Well, almost all. Mikayla was clearly furious that I had found my mate. I prayed that today’s performance would be the last of her games, but she seems to be going above and beyond to get me back.
I passed Brad’s room and the guest room next door where Penny had confined herself and I realised I hadn’t heard from him either since early this morning when Allie and I left them. Instead of knocking on his door, I decided to mind link him to check in.
“Hey, man. Everything ok?” I asked.
“Yeah, everything’s cool,” he replied.
“How’s Penny?” I asked.
“She’s doing fine. We are just working through some stuff. I’ll fill you in later,” he said.
“Sure,” I said and ended the mind link. Of course I knew what they were working through, and I knew that some difficult conversations were taking place. But I also knew that Brad could handle it. She needed time to recover from her ordeal first, but I was rooting for them and hoped that they could work it out and that she wanted to stay with him here. He deserves to be happy with his mate. Lord knows, he needs to settle down. Being celibate while I was waiting to find my mate, it was fucking irritating watching him whore his way through most of the she-wolf population.
I only had to wait a few minutes for Allie to return. She bounded through the door happily and closed the door behind her. Before I had a chance to say anything to her, she launched herself into my arms wrapping her legs tightly around my waist, and I smelled the sweet scent of her arousal. It was much stronger than usual as she planted kisses on me feverishly and tugged at my shirt urgently.
I walked us over to the bed and she kicked off her shoes as I came to the edge of the bed and lowered her down on to it. She straddled me and clawed at my belt and pants frantically as I took her shirt off over her head. I ran my hands lightly down her back and sucked on a pebble hard nipple. Her skin was on fire, hot and sticky. She was acting possessed, kissing my chest eagerly, her hands snaking down inside my boxers. I’d never seen her like this, she must be in heat.
“Are you ok, sweetie?” I asked.
“Yeah, I’m fine,” she replied breathlessly, only briefly pausing her kisses to answer. I could see sweat beading at her temples, and her face was pink.
“Honey, I think you are in heat,” I said. She looked confused.
“What does that mean?” she asked, screwing up her nose.
“It means you’re burning up, and your wolf wants to mate constantly. It doesn’t usually start happening until she-wolves are in their early twenties,” I said, “We need to cool you down.” I lifted her off the bed and walked her to the shower, switching the setting to cool and setting her down.
“Here, sweetie. Get in,” I ushered her in to the shower stall. She took the rest of her clothes off and stepped under the spray.
“Reece, this is ridiculous,” she protested, “I feel fine, I’m just a little warm from my practice lesson.” She grabbed my arm and pulled me into the shower with her, wrapping her arms around my neck and planting hot kisses everywhere. Her claws elongated and she raked them down my back, leaving me shuddering. I caged her up against the shower wall, lifting her and sucking on her mark. She moaned at the touch. My mind was clouding with lust, but I had to focus. A she-wolf’s heat will only last a maximum of 48 hours and can be controlled by keeping cool. Otherwise her wolf will want to mate round the clock. I’m not one to usually complain about time spent in the bedroom, sex with Allie is totally mind-blowing every single time, but it is dangerous if their body temperature gets too high for too long. It can lead to heat exhaustion.
As the cool spray of the shower worked its magic, her kisses became less urgent. She sighed as she melted into me, and she slowly peeled off my boxers. She glided to her knees and suddenly I was no longer in control, we were both lost in the mate bond.
