Chapter Another Bonfire
Luna Elise is a spitfire, and like TNT she's not only explosive but also itching to go off. She's eighteen, only five feet even, with light blue eyes and long blonde hair she keeps in a ponytail. According to the others her wolf is red with ice blue eyes.
Luna Shelly has a calm mind, a caring heart and a busy lifestyle. I found myself wondering how she fits so much into a day. At five feet four inches she's the second shortest Luna in the mating ritual. Her dark brown hair is longer than Elise, but kept in a braid, and her medium brown eyes show her emotions easily. She has a golden wolf with yellow eyes.
Luna Stephanie is six feet two inches, making her the tallest Luna in the mating ritual. Despite her height she might be the most timid of us. But I sensed a calculating mind as we talked I realized she thought everything through before saying or acting. Maybe she calculated too much, but I found that this only made me appreciate her staying more.
I also learned what each of them was hoping to find in a mate, and what they absolutely didn't want. All in all it was a great meeting, once the other three left.
When I stepped into the lobby my bro was already waiting for me. The moment he saw me he couldn't help but laugh while shaking his head. As soon as I got close enough he exclaimed, "You just couldn't resist telling off Luna Eleanor, could you?"
"That windbag needed to be taken down a few notches." I snapped as I put my sunglasses on.
"Maybe we should talk in the car." My bro stated quietly.
I chuckled. "You mean definitely."
He wrapped me in a hug and asked, "What am I going to do with you?"
"Darned if I know." I replied, "But leaving me isn't an option."
He released me and we walked out together. I ignored all the shocked looks and angry glares. I'd already figured out that we didn't behave "appropriately" for a Luna and Beta, according to other werewolves, but we were bro and sis first, and I didn't care what any of them thought about me, I wasn't going to change to make them happy, specially at the cost of my own happiness.
When we got in the car my bro handed me a small box with a shiny green bow on it. "Got you a present."
"Another one?" I questioned, "Why would you do that?"
I opened the box as he said, "Technically it's just completing my wardrobe present."
I looked down at my swimsuit. "Is this supposed to be a joke?"
He laughed, then he explained, "I realized that you didn't have anything to wear to the beach, and you probably wouldn't like the available options. A guy's swimsuit wouldn't work, unless you want to be topless." I shook my head. "So, I grabbed the one you brought with and dropped it off at the tailor this morning. She rushed to make you a Wolf Wear duplicate, so you can wear it to the bonfire tonight."
I picked it up and examined it closely. "Jasmine did a great job. If it wasn't for the tag I would doubt your story. She must have put it at the top of her to do list, I'll have to thank her for the extra effort next time I see her."
My bro smiled and informed me, "I already thanked her porfusely and gave her a tip."
"That's you." I countered, "She'll still get an appreciative word from me."
"No argument there." My bro sighed. "So, you want to tell me what you did to get Luna Eleanor fighting for you to be at the bottom of the Luna pile?"
"You mean you weren't given a full report?" I asked sarcastically.
"Let's just say I was given unflattering highlights."
I told him every last detail, how she happily ordered me chocolate thinking it would poison me, how she basically spent the whole time trying to make me conform or submit, and how I lost control and told her off.
"That's my sis." My bro said with a smile.
Then I told him about my three Luna friends.
"I guess you're lucky Luna Eleanor didn't kick you out of town after all." My bro said with a smirk.
"Luck had nothing to do with it." I informed him, "She still wants to break me, and she can't do that if I'm not here."
"She has no idea what you've survived to get here. If that didn't break you, she sure won't."
I looked fondly at my bro. He knew all my secrets and hardships, but he never treated me as any less for having gone through them. He was the only one in that entire town who knew me at all.
Something occurred to me, "Wait, when you got the Luna pack for me, did they make a Luna page for me to go in the Alpha pack?"
"Of course."
"What all did you tell them?" I inquired, staring intently at him.
"Nothing big. You're age, including birthday. That your height is five feet eleven inches, your eyes are blue, I described your short brown hair and blonde tail. I referred to you as a tomboy. I told them your human mother's name, and said that your father is unknown. I told them the number of known siblings, and that there's Shade blood in you."
"They already knew that."
"Exactly." He stated, "The only other thing they know is the high school you attended when we first met, which you graduated from, and that I've been watching out for you ever since, which is why they allowed the unusual Beta arrangements to be made."
"What happens to you if I choose a mate that already has a Beta?"
He shrugged his shoulders. "Either you release me from my duties, or his Beta and I fight for the spot, probably to the death."
"I don't like those options!" I declared.
He admitted, "Neither do I, but there are a few Alphas looking to build their packs, rather than taking over or already ruling an existing pack. Maybe you'll choose one of them."
I sighed. "What if I don't pick a mate, or end up going rogue to get away from werewolf politics?"
"In the first case I will remain your Beta until you do pick a mate." He answered, "In the second you can either release me, or I can follow you, probably ruining my own chances at finding a mate, much less a pack."
"But you can't build a pack starting with a Luna." I said glumly.
"It's never been done before." My bro informed me, "But there's never been a Silver Luna before either."
"A what?"
"That's a discussion for later." He replied, "Right now we need to get to the beach."
"Can't we just go home?"
"Afraid not little sis."
"Why?" I asked, almost whining.
"Tonight's bonfire is different. Each fire is for a dating class. You will be at the first fire, and I will be at the second." He informed me.
"I won't get to see you all night?"
"You can, but you'll probably be too busy." My bro explained, "Tonight is about letting the possible mates get to know each other, see who you connect with."
"I think I've entered the world's worst dating game." I declared.
When we got to the beach I went into the bathroom to change into my swimsuit. My bro waited outside. Then we went for a swim.
In what seemed like no time at all the crowds began to gather at the many bonfires. We left the water. My bro walked me to my bonfire, then went to his own.
I was quickly greeted by my new Luna friends. "Isn't this exciting?" Luna Elise asked.
I shrugged my shoulders.
A mated Alpha and Luna stood by the pile of wood that would become our bonfire. The unmated stood in front of our mated counterpart. The Luna had short brown hair and green eyes. The Alpha's hair was a darker brown, and just long enough to get put in a ponytail, his eyes were a sparkling blue.
The mated Alpha spoke first. "Tonight's about getting a feel for each other. While one on one time is encouraged, don't spend all your time with any one prospect."
His Luna continued, "There's one more Alpha than Luna, so let's try not to leave anyone sitting by themselves for too long."
"While you are free to release potential mates, it's not wise to paint yourself into a corner this early in the game." The mated Alpha pointed out.
"Try to keep your mind open to future possibilities." His Luna added, "But most of all have fun."
The unmated clapped and cheered, and the mated pair lit our fire together.
I guess they had the shortest speech, because it was a little while before the other fires were lit.
I watched in awe as the mated pair stepped away from our fire.
Luna Shelly smiled widely. "Their Love has always been an inspiration to me."
I looked at Luna Shelly. "Are they your Alpha and Luna?"
She nodded her head. Then she gasped and asked, "Would you like to meet them?"
"Actually I would."
She grabbed my hand and pulled me over to them. "Mom, dad, I'd like you to meet Luna DoJo."
Shelly's mom took my hand and exclaimed, "I've heard so much about you in the last day that I almost feel like we've already met."
Her dad took my other hand. "Don't worry, we believe our daughter's version of events over Luna Eleanor's."
"Thank you Luna and Alpha." I said cautiously.
Luna Shelly piped up, "How rude of me, Luna DoJo, this is Luna Melinda and Alpha Mike."
"It's nice to meet you." I assured them.
Luna Melinda whispered, "I know you have a lot of important conversations to have, but could we talk for a minute?"
I nodded my head.
Alpha Mike told Shelly, "You go mingle, we can't be down two Lunas when there's already less of you."
She nodded and headed to join Luna Elise and the two Alphas she was talking to. A third Alpha soon joined their group.
I walked with Luna Melinda and Alpha Mike towards a pavilion. They were basically our shaperones for the night, but wanted to stay out of the way, after all most of us were adults.
Luna Melinda started the conversation, "You're a very special Luna, and I doubt you know how special."
"Because of this you have been given top billing." Alpha Mike said, beaming with pride. "Despite Luna Eleanor's attempts to put you at the bottom."
"I don't understand." I admitted.
Luna Melinda explained, "On new moon night the choosing ceremony will take place. To keep from having total chaos it goes by a ranking system. The Alphas go first, and then down the line, but each level has to have an order."
"Luna Eleanor's niece, Luna Therese, was expected to get first, until your wolf revealed itself last night." Alpha Mike continued, "There was an emergency meeting of the council last night, and the new order was decided."
I concluded, "With me going first."
They nodded. Luna Melinda added, "Everyone else got adjusted too. Most went down the expected one slot, but Luna Shelly stayed in second and Luna Therese went to third, because of her behavior to you before the bonfire."
I chuckled. "Luna Eleanor is mighty petty to allow something I had no control over to effect the way she treats me."
"She tried to get you lowered after the meeting today." Luna Melinda stated, "But to no avail."
"One threat she failed to accomplish." I replied with a grin.
"Luna Eleanor is afraid of you. She thought the Silver Luna was a fairy tale, and now you're here, messing up the status quo." Alpha Mike informed me.
"I really need to learn why everyone is obsessed with my fur color." I exclaimed.
"I'm sure your Beta will tell you about it." Luna Melinda assured me, "We made sure he got all the information you need."
Alpha Mike looked over at the bonfire and said, "I think we've kept you long enough. You should get back."
I looked over at the bonfire. The others seemed to be having fun, but I still dreaded the idea. I however knew that Alpha Mike was right. I couldn't put things off forever, specially knowing everything I just found out, and knowing there was still more to learn. I let out a deep sigh, thanked them for their time, and walked back to the Alpha fire.
