Chapter 3: Reunion
The other host looked cautiously at Elsa as her face went cold. “Is everything okay?”
“Oh, I just forgot to eat breakfast this morning, so I’m a little low on juice.” Elsa took a deep breath to steady herself as her expression returned to normal. “I’ll get his autograph for you later.”
The host thanked her and left. Cherry returned to Elsa’s side with more information. “Ryan’s been filming up north for the last six months, and he just got back last week. He wasn’t on the guest list, but his agent made a call. I only found out about the guest list changing when I got here earlier.”
Her voice was low, and she sighed again. “Elsa, you should just go home, seriously.”
“But what are they going to do without me hosting the program?” Elsa flicked her hair over her shoulder with a smile. “We’re going to get so many viewers if Ryan’s on the list today!”
After Elsa had reacted that way to just hearing Ryan’s name, Cherry knew this wasn’t a good idea. If she hadn’t grown up with Elsa and known what Ryan did to her, Cherry would have thought she’d forgotten all about him years ago. But Elsa

handed the scripts over.
“Well, I hope you figure this out, then.”

“I’m a great host. I’ll give the audience what they want to see.” Elsa hugged Cherry and gave her a kiss. “Stan’s going to be busy with his new girlfriend tonight, so he’s not going to bother me. You’d better make me dinner.”
“Fine, fine.” Cherry shooed her away, and she finally left.
Elsa watched her go, and when Cherry was out of sight, the smile on her face faded away. The documents in her hand felt heavier than lead, and she was shaking uncontrollably.
The stylist called her name, and Elsa came back to reality, following them into another room with the scripts still clutched in her hand. By 1:10 P.M., all six guests had arrived at the studio, and most of the staff was rushing to see Ryan Hyde. The hallways were crowded with people.
Elsa took another deep breath, put a smile on, and walked through the crowd to begin greeting the guests.
When she reached the end of the hallway, a slender figure appeared. She flinched almost instantly.
A big hand reached out and shook hers. “Elsa.”

The man’s hand was lean and cold. Elsa couldn’t bring herself to move. The casual greeting and the initiative he’d taken in shaking her hand turned heads, but Elsa caught a glance of the strange look on her assistant’s face and shook herself out of her trance. She pushed her jumble of emotions down.
Calmly, she lifted her head and locked eyes with the man, lips turned up in a smile. “It’s a pleasure to meet you, Mr. Hyde. I love your movies, so I might as well be a fan.”
Her tone was tense, as if she really was a fan meeting her idol. “I didn’t expect you to come to my studio after you won all those awards. I’m flattered. This doesn’t seem real.”
Her words relaxed the atmosphere immediately, and smiles broke out all around. One of the guests turned to tease her. “You’d better get along with Ryan, then. He’ll lose the charm if he comes on the show too often.”.
“That’s only natural.” Elsa laughed along, letting go of Ryan’s hand smoothly. He was soon flanked by a group of staff members and herded away to a dressing room, and Elsa slowly relaxed as he disappeared from sight.
The recording officially began at 3 P.M. After tidying up in the bathroom for ten minutes, Elsa was back to her calm, capable self as a host, interacting amicably and playing games with the guests. All six of them were celebrities, but when Ryan took the stage, the audience’s cheers nearly blew the roof off.
The ninety–minute recording session was over quickly. The
director approached Elsa afterward to compliment her. “You‘ re in better form than ever. I heard you were a fan of Ryan Hyde–weren’t you scared you’d screw up in front of him?”
“Oh, for sure.” Elsa was taking off her earpiece and handing it to a staff member. “Director, these contacts are killing me. I’m going to head to the dressing room to take them out.” She hurried away.
Just as she entered the dressing room, about to call for her makeup artist, someone squeezed in and grabbed her by the hand.
