Inside the hospital.
Chapter 31
The matriarch of the Foster family, Sabrina, anxiously waited outside the emergency room.
Her eldest son, Daniel, and daughter–in–law, Emily, were in critical condition. Both of their lives were hanging by a thread.
“God, please protect my family. Please let Daniel and Emily overcome this ordeal safely. Even if it means that I have to sacrifice 10 or 20 years of my life in exchange for their safety. I’m willing to do so.”
“Mrs. Foster, don’t worry. Daniel is a good person, and fate will favor him. He’ll be fine.”
When Blanche saw the news of Daniel and Emily’s car accident on the news, she almost could not control her laughter.
After marrying into the Foster family, Emily considered herself superior compared to others. Her arrogant demeanor annoyed Blanche very much.
Now, the whole world knew that Emily’s husband was cheating on her. Having their dirty laundry aired in public was embarrassing for Emily.
Daniel and Emily were both rushed into the emergency room.
Blanche thought to herself, “It would have been best if they had died on the spot. Then Duncan will be the only son of the Foster family. Once I make more effort and win Duncan over, everything the Foster family has will be mine.”
Sabrina watched as Blanche pretended to be concerned about Daniel and Emily. Sabrina was already annoyed, but Blanche’s sight made her even more irritated.
All these years. Blanche had been chasing after Duncan, but Duncan had absolutely no interest in Blanche.
Duncan was initially engaged to Blanche’s sister, Christine. Sabrina wondered, “Does Blanche think that she can replace Christine in the engagement because Christine is gone? She’s so shameless and laughable.”
“You’ve also been here for quite some time. Go back and rest,” said Sabrina.
Sabrina just wanted to send Blanche away. Blanche’s presence annoyed her.
“Mrs. Foster, I know you’re concerned about me, but Daniel is still in the emergency room. How can I go back before knowing that Daniel is safe? I want to stay here and take care of you.”
“I don’t need you to take care of me. Go back.”
Sabrina’s tone was unfriendly, and she was just short of calling security on Blanche and chasing her away.
However, Blanche still lacked tact and shamelessly said, “Mrs. Foster, since Duncan is saving Daniel in the emergency room, I have to take good care of you on behalf of Duncan.”
Just as Sabrina’s expression turned ugly, the door to the emergency room opened.
Sabrina anxiously approached, and Blanche followed behind her.
Sabrina anxiously asked Duncan, who was wearing a white coat. “Duncan, how’s Daniel and Emily?”
Duncan said with furrowed brows, “Daniel and Emily have multiple injuries all over their bodies. Currently, Emily’s condition has stabilized, and she’s not in any immediate life–threatening danger.”
Upon hearing that Emily was fine, Blanche’s expression turned sour. She thought, “Emily is fortunate to still be alive.”
Sabrina’s tense expression eased slightly. “Thank goodness, Emily is fine. What about Daniel?”
Duncan’s brows furrowed even deeper.
“Daniel has broken ribs and a punctured pleura. This has caused internal bleeding. I’ve stopped the bleeding through surgery, but the most troublesome problem now is the fracture of the odontoid process on the back of his cervical spine. Behind the odontoid process is the life center, the medulla oblongata. If the fracture displaces and injures the medulla oblongata, it can lead to respiratory and cardiac arrest at any time. It’s a life–threatening risk.”
Upon hearing that Daniel’s life was at risk, Sabrina almost lost her balance.
“Duncan, hurry back in and perform surgery on Daniel.”
“Mrs. Foster, calm down. If Duncan hasn’t performed surgery on Daniel yet, it must mean the situation is severe. Please calm down and listen to what Duncan has to say,” said Blanche.
Duncan choked up and said, “Sabrina, I’m sorry. This is a high–risk surgery with a high mortality and disability rate. I don’t have confidence in this surgery.”
Duncan’s eyes were filled with sadness. He had worked hard on his medical skills to protect his loved ones, but lie never expected to encounter such a situation where he felt helpless.

Chapter 31
Duncan, what do you saying? What do you mean you don’t have confidence in this surgery? You’re a renowned genius doctor. How can you not be confident?”
Duncan’s eyes grew somber as he sadly said, “Sabrina, the axis vertebra is the second cervical vertebra in the human body that plays a crucial role in maintaining the head and neck rotation function. Damage to this vertebra can cause dislocation of the atlantoaxial joint and even fatal spinal cord compression. This surgery involves the high cervical vertebrae, and even a slight mistake could result in high–level paralysis or even respiratory failure. This is why it’s the riskiest segment in cervical spine surgery.”
The more Sabrina listened, the more terrified she felt. Duncan meant that if this surgery did not go well, Daniel could die or even become paralyzed.
Daniel was such a high–spirited person. Being paralyzed would be equivalent to losing his life.
Listening at the side, Blanche raised an eyebrow and subtly revealed a smug expression. She had been disappointed earlier. when she heard that Emily was not dead.
Now, hearing that Daniel might be paralyzed even if he survived, Blanche was overjoyed.
Emily was alive, but Daniel would either be dead or paralyzed. Daniel might as well survive this ordeal and be paralyzed so that Emily would have to care for him for the rest of her life.
Emily had to bear the greatest responsibility for this incident. Mrs. Foster would surely not show Emily any kindness, and Emily would have to suffer in the Foster family. Just thinking about Emily’s plight made Blanche happy.
Blanche frowned and said enigmatically, “Sabrina, it’s all because of Emily’s recklessness. This incident wouldn’t have happened if Emily hadn’t fought with Daniel on the road. It’s such a pity for Daniel. His life is hanging by a thread, and he will likely end up paralyzed. Daniel is so pitiful.”
Blanche’s feigned sorrowful appearance was genuinely nauseating.
Sabrina glared at her and disdainfully said, “Shut up. This is our family’s affairs, and we don’t need your commentary.”
Seeing Sabrina flare up, Blanche finally had the sense to keep quiet.
Duncan comforted Sabrina. “Sabrina, don’t worry. I’ll think of a way to find someone capable of performing Daniel’s
surgery.”
Sabrina’s eyes dimmed. Her voice was close to desperation as she said, “Could there really be someone who has the ability to perform surgery on Daniel?”
Duncan was hailed as a genius doctor. If even Duncan had no confidence in this surgery, then who could perform this surgery on Daniel?
Duncan fell silent. His eyes were as gloomy as Sabrina’s.
“I’ll perform the surgery.”
Christine’s voice wasn’t loud, but it was resounding and resolute. It was like a beam of light redeeming the despair of Duncan and Sabrina. They looked at the person who had appeared in front of them.
Duncan walked forward excitedly and asked, “Dr. Nancy, do you have a solution?”
“I’ve carefully reviewed Daniel’s medical report. Based on his current condition, I’ve decided to perform the atlantoaxial pedicle screw fixation surgery.”
Christine’s gaze was deep as she said firmly, “The atlantoaxial pedicle screw fixation provides strong internal stability through the use of pedicle screw technology. It can immediately restore stability to the C1 and C2 vertebrae in the neck. Due to the complex relationship with adjacent structures, the upper cervical vertebrae present a high risk of injury to the vertebral artery and spinal cord. This makes the screw fixation surgery challenging. Hence, the surgery still carries significant risks, However, the posterior cervical atlantoaxial pedicle screw fixation surgery has minimal trauma, shorter operation time, less bleeding, rapid recovery, and unaffected neck mobility after surgery. So, this method is the best.”
“Dr. Nancy, you’re not wrong in what you’re saying, but the upper cervical vertebrae are complex due to their relationship. with adjacent structures and the high risk of injury to the vertebral artery and spinal cord. The screw fixation surgery is challenging, and even a slight lack of attention can lead to full–body paralysis or even death. The technical requirements for the lead surgeon are extremely demanding.”
“Based on the name Nancy, don’t you trust me?”
