The Reckoning of Love Chapter 12
Chapter 12 Suddenly Employed
Julian narrowed his eyes slightly in response. He didn’t entertain her question but only walked away. He didn’t tell her where he was going, but either way, he had left the house. Shortly after, Celeste also got out of bed, thinking he must have gone to work. After all, if they were to expect a baby, he would need to earn money to feed another mouth, and his burden would become heavier. She was supposed to have a rendezvous with Selene this day at the Fairytale Cottage, hoping to help out in the patisserie, but just as she was about to head out, she received a call from an unknown number. “Is this Celeste Kiss?” the caller asked as soon as Celeste answered it. “Hello, yes. This is Celeste speaking.” “Hi, I’m Marlon Cantrell, calling from Greatrep Group’s Design Department, and I would like to congratulate you on your hire. Please come for orientation. I’ve already sent you the detailed address and office floor.” Celeste was stunned. She couldn’t believe she had received a response just when she began to give up after submitting her resume a month ago. Better yet, it was from Greatrep Group! She couldn’t believe this was real! “Celeste Kiss, are you listening?” “Yes, yes. Thank you, Mr. Cantrell!” She was over the moon. “Although you don’t have any work experience, we carefully reviewed the works you submitted and think you indeed have your own style.” “Thank you for the recognition, Mr. Cantrell! I’ll come over right away!” After ending the call, she rummaged through her suitcase and pulled out a yellow-orange dress to change into. It was the most high-end clothing she had in her suitcase, bought for 150 in Scarlem last year. After getting into a cab and heading out, she called Selene to inform her that she had been hired by Greatrep Group and wouldn’t be going to Fairytale Cottage for the day. “Greatrep Group? Good for you, Celeste, you lucky girl!” Selene was shocked upon hearing the news but also felt happy for her best friend. “You’re joining the leading enterprise that supports Rotterwand’s economy. I heard the benefits there are great! It’s a dream-come-true workplace for countless youths!” “It still feels like a dream to me, too.” For Celeste, she was already happy that she could enter a major company like Greatrep, even if the salary they offered her was a little low. When she got out of the cab at the entrance of Greatrep Group, she found two rows of well-dressed employees standing outside the glass doors, each of them handsome and tall. They had the air of professionals as if they were welcoming some important person. As she approached the building, she felt an extremely unusual atmosphere. It was so grave that it was suffocating! Looking through the glass doors into the lobby, Celeste saw many people inside. It seemed that the leaders from various departments had gathered, as everyone was dressed formally, slightly older in age, wearing work badges on their chests. Each of them exuded a spirited and diligent aura, showing no signs of carelessness. Celeste had only ever witnessed a grand scene like this on the news. A sense of solemnity overwhelmed her. She gathered her courage and entered the building, only to realize she was out of place in her yellow-orange dress amidst the solemn, dark attire of the people around her. “What are you doing here? Which department are you from?” Chelsea Mack, the Director of the Design Department, dressed in a sharp black suit and came striding over with a stern frown, scolding, “Did your supervisor not inform you about the occasion?” Celeste quickly noticed the work badge on the woman’s chest and spoke sincerely, “I’m sorry, Miss Mack. My name is Celeste Kiss, and I’m a new designer. I received a call from Mr. Cantrell this morning and hurried over—” However, her explanation only infuriated Chelsea. “Sounds to me like you want to be fired! Do you not have logic?! Can you not tell what’s going on here?” Celeste was bewildered, not knowing what she had done wrong at all. Fortunately, Chelsea’s phone rang just then, and she shot the young woman a harsh glance before quickly answering the call, “Okay, okay, got it.” After hanging up, Celeste glared daggers at Celeste again, rushing her, “The new CEO is on his way. Don’t take the elevator up. Find a place to hide right away!” “Yes, Miss Mack.” Celeste obliged despite not having fully grasped the situation. She retreated cautiously, hiding within the crowd. What new CEO? What is all this about? Carefully and cautiously, she retreated until she was completely hidden within the crowd, and that was when she overheard some whispers. “Why is he taking office ahead of schedule? Wasn’t he supposed to come next month?” “I heard the new CEO is very young, only 23 years old. His records show that he graduated from the world’s top-ranked university with dual doctoral degrees at twenty. A recognized prodigy in the business world.”
