The Reborn

Chapter I'll beat you. Brother or not

I pressed the pack of ice on his jaw with a sheepish smile. “Sorry. I wasn’t expecting them to react so bad.”

Sam glared at me and took the pack from my hand. “It’s fine, but Flame can throw a very powerful punch. That’s for sure.”

I sighed. “At last they were happy to see you after you told them the whole story.”

“At last?? My jaw is crocked for Hell’s sake!” he said with his face red.

“Would you calm down? Look at the good part. They could’ve killed you, but we are good guys.”

He scoffed. “Good guys who like to replace bones I see.”

“Build a bridge and get over it already! Be a man for bolts sake! You whine like a 5 years old kid. And Sky almost fainted when he figured out that you are Sam.”

“Yeah. I really missed that little sunshine.” he said and smiled without even sensing it.

I smiled too. “And the best part is that Hazel and Leaf will make ‘Quadruplets t-shirts’.”

He groaned. “But I don’t want to look like a loser and I’m sure that they will make the shirts pink or red. And I hate pink and red.”

“At last you won’t be number 4.” I mumbled as we walk through the halls.

“It’s not my fault that you were the last one to poop out.”

I glared at him. “It’s not my fault either!”

He raised his hand in surrender because the other one was busy holding the pack of ice. “Okay, okay. Whatever you say, but why are we in the hospital? My jaw isn’t that bad.”

I frowned. “You’ll meet the last member of our team.”

He kept silent as I lead the way through the maze of halls. After spending so much time here, I memorised the whole place. The perks of having visual memory. I stopped in front of the door and turned to Sam with a small smile.

“At last he can’t punch you. For now at last.”

He smiled sadly at me and motioned for me to open the door. I took a chair from the empty hall and then we both walked in. Nothing changed from the last time I was here. The white walls are still staring at me bored, the grey tiles on the floor are still starting to look more white than grey due to constantly mopping and on the white bed was still laying a person with pure black hair.

I sighed and placed the other chair next to the one that it was already here. Sam was looking at Sharpedon’s laying figure with a frown.

“This is the guy who jumped on Black when he tried to shoot you?”

I sighed once again and patted the chair next to mine. “Yes, he is. Sam this is Sharpedon and Sharpedon this is Sam, or how you may know him, Spike. He’s my quadruplet so no need to worry.”

Sam looked at me worried. “He is like this since then? He never woke up?”

I shook my head. “No, but I hope that he will wake up soon. I got used to having him around so it’s kind of hard without him.” I said and bit my lip. It’s true. I feel lonely with him annoying me 24/7. And all because if me and my stupid brain.

“What’s wrong with him?”

“The bullet hit his lungs and when he arrived here was more dead than alive. His lungs were almost full with blood, but the doctors saved him. Now it’s up to him to wake up....” I trailed off staring at the floor.

“Then why isn’t he up already?”

I shook my head blinking fast to stop the tears. “I don’t know. His breathing is way more better than before, but he’s still sleeping or in a come or whatever this shit is! I don’t have any idea why.” my voice cracked at the end and I rubbed my eyes furiously.

Don’t cry bitch. You have to be strong.

Sam raised from his seat and placed his head on Sharpedon chest.

“What-” I stopped talking when he raised his hand. He kept listening for a minute until he turned to me.

“He is whizzing when he’s breathing and I think that I know why he isn’t awake.”

Hope sparked inside my chest as my eyes widen. “You do??! What’s wrong with him? What we have to do? Or can we do something? He will be fine or is he dying?? OMG he’s dying isn’t he?”

“SHADOW.”

“YES.” I yelled back at him breathing heavy from all my rambling.

He rolled his eyes. “He won’t die. He’ll be fine. I think that he has acute onset dyspnea.”

I narrowed my eyes at him. “And that’s a good thing?”

“Acute onset dyspnea is the whizzing sound I told you about and it can appear from different reasons.” he explained and I nodded.

“And how do we know the exact reason?”

“Most of them are heart diseases and affections and we have only one left that fits with what happened to him.”

I glared at him. “If you stop one more time in the middle of the fucking explanation, I’ll beat you. Brother or not.”

He raised his hands. “Fine. Something must be stuck in his lungs, blocking the air to spread normal in his body including his heart and head, so this can be the reason why he isn’t awake yet.”

I raised from my seat smiling. “That makes sense! We know what’s wrong with him and we can make him wake up! He will wake up! That’s great! Wait. What can we do?”

He chuckled. “We have to tell the doctor about this and he has to check his lungs again.”

“Wait, but if he has something stuck there, the doctor would have seen at the x-ray.”

“Not really. When he made the x-ray, his lungs were filled with blood so Doc couldn’t actually see what’s there. And it could be a part of the bullet the doctors missed or some dried blood mixed with dark poison. Or it can be something else, but I don’t know what else. This 2 make more sense.” he said starting to think at another variants.

I smiled and hugged him tightly. “Thank you for saving my life and now saving Sharpedon’s. It means a lot to me.”

He hugged me back and chuckled. “You’re welcome, but we have to announce the doctor first and then he can save your friend’s life.”

I pulled back with wide eyes. “You’re right. I’ll be right back!” I said and bolted out of the room.

“SNOW! SNOW! SNOW! SNOW! SNOW!” I yelled while running down the halls since I knew that there’s no way in hell I could find out where he is.

“SHADOW THUNDER OF MOONLIGHT. WHY IN THE NAME OF SNOWFLAKES ARE YOU WAKING UP THE WHOLE HOSPITAL??!!”

I crashed in someone’s chest and when I looked up, I saw a fuming Snow. He looks kind of funny with his white hair and red face, but it’s not time to make fun of him.

“Doc I know what’s wrong with Sharpedon! I know why he’s not awake! Well, I’m not the one who knows, it’s my brother, but we know and now you can make him wake up and-” I kept rambling as I dragged him by the hand towards Sharpedon’s room.

“Hold on a minute. Lincoln? What he knows about medicine? We checked for any other kind of injuries a day we found nothing-”

I rolled my eyes. “Not Lincoln. Sam. He’s my quadruplet and we found each other today blah blah blah. It’s not important! He found something and you have to check it!” I pushed the door opened and entered with Snow behind me.

Sam was playing with the pack of water since the ice melted, when we entered the room. “Hello. You must be the doctor?”

Snow pulled his hand away from my grip and straighten his lab suit. “I’m doctor Snow. Care to explain why she screamed like a banshee in the whole hospital?”

He nodded his head and explained everything to him, while I stayed there looking between Snow’s thinking figure to Sam moving his hands while explaining.

Snow rubbed his face. “You can be right. You checked for others injuries from other parts of the body since we already knew the one inside the lungs. Or so we thought. I’ll call the nurse and we’ll take him to the x-rays immediately.” he said and walked out of the room.

I smiled and turned to Sam. “How do you know all this things?”

He scratched his neck. “I wanted to be a doctor once and I like biology.”

“I wanted to be a psychologist or detective once. Of course, before my powers appeared and my world was flipped upside-down. Two years ago to be more exact. God, it seems like it happened a long time ago.” I said and smiled sadly. Sometimes I still miss the calm life I had as a human. Yes, I was alone most of the times, but I had no worries and my life wasn’t at risk so often.

“Time’s flying when you’re your trying your best to save the world, didn’t it?” he asked and I chuckled.

“Something like that.” I said and 2 nurses rushed in.

“We’ll take him to-”

I smiled and nodded my head. “We know.”

She was the same nurse that helped me when I woke up. “He’ll be back in no time.” she smiled and both of them moved him with his bed our of the room.

I sighed and plumbed down in the usual plastic chair and placed my head on Sam’s shoulder. “I’m tired.”

“You should sleep. It was a very long and eventful day for you. It’s already 9 PM. Go to sleep and I’ll wake you up when he’ll be back.”

Usually, due to my insomnia, it takes a at last 3 hours to fell asleep, in the happiest case, but this time I fell asleep almost immediately.

Stress affects everyone. The only thing is that some people react better at stress than others.

*poke*

“AAAAAH. What the fuck?” I yelped and rubbed the right side of my neck.

Sam shrugged. “I tried to wake you up, but it didn’t work so I pinched your neck.”

I glared at him. “Why in the name of thunders you punches my neck?? My arm isn’t enough for you?”

He rolled his eyes. “No stupid. If I’d have pinched your arm, you would still be sleeping because you have freaking muscles and you don’t feel a thing. And I already pinched your arm.”

I rubbed my eyes and yawned. “Whatever. Why did you woke me up?”

“You slept the whole night and he’s back.” he motioned for me to look ahead and I saw that Sharpedon was back in his room.

My head snapped towards Sam. “What happened? He has what you has that he has? He will be fine?” I bite my tongue to stop myself from rambling.

“Yup. I was right. A very little part of the bullet was stuck there and poisoned blood dried around it. Like a shield. The doctors removed the last part of the bullet and he can wake up any minute from now.”

A big smile appeared on my face and I hugged him. “You are the best brother ever. I love you so much and thank you for saving him.”

He chuckled and hugged me back. “You said that before.”

“It doesn’t matter! I’ll tell it again and again because I’m so happy!!”

He pulled back with a serious face. “And doc told me that you have to take some vitamins and do some exercises. He also said that you spend too much time here. You have to get out and let the sun see you skin because you’re pale as fuck.”

“So you are dump ass! And I took my pills yesterday and I did my exercises yesterday.” I replied like I was the naughty kid and he was the caring mother who scolds her children.

“Great. Let’s go somewhere and do something and after we can come back so you can take your pills and do what you have to do.”

I nodded my head and stretched yawning. “Fine.” an idea popped in my head. “Let’s go to the library. I need to do some research.”

He got up from his seat and we headed to the library. “What are you looking for?”

“Black’s sword wasn’t a normal one. It freaking cut in 2 one of my guns and my wound isn’t from a normal blade or sword. He said that it’s a cursed sword, but I don’t know what it means or what that kind of sword can do.” I said as I took a sandwich from a vending machine.

He frowned. “Calamity gave him that sword. He said that it goes from generation to generation. ‘A family thing’. But that’s all I know.”

I stumped my foot on the ground and glared. “Like our father’s ring, but that bastard has it.” I took a bite from the sandwich and slammed the doors of the library open. Some people glared at me and I glared back at them 10 times worst.

“I tried to steal the ring before I left, but he never let’s go of that ring.” he said as we started to scan the book shelfs.

“It’s fine. I’ll get that ring back in some way. I don’t know how, but I’ll think about it.”

We took 10 books. The majority of them are about different kind of swords and weapons, another ones are about spells and others are about family traditions and treasures. After some arguments with the lady that works here we finally left. We aren’t allowed to take more than 5 books with us, but after I slipped her a dark chocolate bar, she gave up. Here, not even the adults aren’t allowed to eat sweets and I’m running out of my secret stock of junkies. The cherry on top is that I can’t sneak in and take another ones because they placed a device that can sense the changes of heat in the room when someone unauthorised enters. So if they don’t see me, they can feel my hotness.

Once we were back in Sharp’s room, we seat down and started to read the books.

“NOTHING. WE FOUND NOTHING.” I yelled exasperated. We spent half of the day to freaking read every single book and we found absolutely nothing. Not even a single word about a cursed sword or at last if it exists some kind of spell that can placed on a sword ‘to curse’ it.

His eyes were red and puffy from all the reading and they were barely open. “I know, but we have to search more. Maybe ask someone. I don’t know, but we can’t give up. And let’s be serious, do you really thought that this would be so easy?”

I sighed and ran my hands through my hair. “No....Maybe. Yes, but only a little. I just want to know what that sword is and how I can break it or at last how I can protect myself from it.” I closed the book and placed in on the floor next to the other ones. This one was the last one and I feel like my head is about to explode. Too many unuseful information.

He yawned and threw the book he has on his lap on the floor. “I understand your worry, but you have to be patient. Now, I’ll go and take a nap since I can barely keep my eyes open and tomorrow we will try again.”

“Okay. You can go. I’ll stay here a little longer and I’ll come.” I said with a tired smile.

He stared at me for a moment. “You really care about him.”

I rolled my eyes. “Of course I do. He’s my friend and the leader of my team.”

“No. You care about him more than you care for a team mate or your leader. Let’s be honest, if someone else from the team was in his place would you be sitting here every day like you are doing right now?” he asked as he leaned on the door frame.

I frowned because a part of me knows that he’s right, but the other part is stubborn as fuck. “I think that I’m staying here like this because I kind of feel guilty for what happened.”

He shook his head. “I don’t want to know what you think. I want to know what you feel. There’s a difference between what you think and what you feel. But I’ll say it in other way. Think about what you feel. You need to think with your heart this time. This must be pretty hard for you since you always like to overthink everything, but it’s not impossible.”

I opened my mouth to say something, but he cut me. “And don’t you dare to deny everything. I may be here for one day, but I’m not stupid nor blind. Something it’s there.” he moved his hand between me and Sharpedon. “And you need to think about it and figure it out before it’s too late.” he turned around and left leaving me alone with my thoughts.

I can’t like him. I’m only here because I feel guilty and responsible for what happened to him, but that’s all. And because he is my practice partener.

“You need to think with your heart this time.”

How should I think with my heart? How is that even possible? I mean how am I supposed to completely ignore my thoughts and concentrate on what my heart feels? As an Elementar, my mind is everything since you have to think and concentrate in order to use your powers, so it’s impossible to just stop over thinking and just feel.

I sighed and buried my face in my hands. Bolt? Do you have any idea?

Well, maybe we need a girls talk with a girl. You know those deep conversation with giggles and very emotional endings.

You know that this is a good idea?

Of course I know that. If it wasn’t a good idea, I wouldn’t have suggested it in the first place.

I rolled my eyes. I have a cocky Bolt in my head.

Okay, so tomorrow I’ll have a girls talk with Sparky and Windy, even if I know that it will end bad. Those 2 are too energetic and enthusiastic and they like gossiping a lot.

I sighed again and rested my head on the edge of his bed.

God, why are things so complicated?
