The rage Within

Chapter 39

I heard the footsteps long before the door handle moved. As soon as the door cracked open the smell of her reached me before she came into sight. These new abilities were going to take some getting used to, but I couldn’t help being impressed with it all.

“Do you mind if I come in?” she said. I could see the redness in her eyes. I was taken aback to see Bili in this vulnerable state.

“Please do, seeing that it’s not actually my place.”

She walked over to the foot stool that was on the other side of a small coffee table and sat down.

“I hope you can forgive me.” She said

“For what? Saving my life? ” I said in earnest. “I was on deaths door. Thank you. Really.”

“There may come a day in a few hundred years when you look back on this day and wished it had ended differently. This life suits everyone differently.”

As she was sitting across from me something suddenly occurred to me.

“My girlfriend is one of them isn’t she?” I said.

“Yes. I wanted to warn you about her several times, but there was no way to without raising suspicion or telling you the truth. Now you can understand.”

“Do you think she was sent to kill me? Or working with Kristov?”

“No. Neither does Theo. If that was the case we would have taken measures. That being said I’m sure that meeting you was no coincidence.”

“You think everything about her is bullshit?”

“I don’t know, but you may be surprised to know how rare a relationship between humans and-”

“Yeah, Theo mentioned it. And yes, in hindsight I’m sure none of it was an accident. But if she really wanted to do me harm she could have done it easily on numerous occasions. That’s the part that doesn’t make sense.”

“Maybe she was just the watch dog, who relayed your every move back to whoever is holding her leash.” Bili said.

Her disgust with the wolves was far from cloaked. I had no doubts that tonight was not the first fight she had with them. I can’t imagine the life she has led to this point. She could be centuries old and seen things I have only googled.

“That would make the most sense I guess.” I said.

It hurt just to think about the hard truths. Was I being set up? Did she really not care? Was I just a mark to be played?

I could see the remnants of sadness still in Bili’s eyes. She was looking at me funny, wanting to say something, but holding her tongue. I was deciphering the smallest movements in her face that seemed to give away one secret after another. It was amazing what I was picking up and deciphering from non-verbal cues.

“Is there something else on your mind?” I said.

“I’m sure Theo will fill you in on the rest when he thinks you are ready, but our little adventure tonight is just the beginning. Trouble is coming.”

“Yeah, Theo mentioned that also. You sure that’s it?” I said.

“Enjoying your new gifts are you?”

“It’s unusual to say the least, but yes. Especially when talking to you.”

I couldn’t help but be a little smug. Bili had the best poker face I had ever seen, but now there were some cracks, and I could read them.

“Look, I’m far from the sentimental type, but I do want to apologize for how I treated you since you’ve been here. I have reasons, none of them good, but they are reasons.”

Bili stood up hesitantly then made her way to the door. She stopped halfway and looked at me.

“You have no idea of how your life has changed tonight Jack. You may think you do, but you don’t.” She said.

I nodded, not sure what to say.

She grabbed for the door handle, about to leave.

“Bili?” I said, stopping her.

“Yeah?”

“Do you ever regret this life?”

She got a look that was half sinister and half mysterious grin. Even with my new abilities I couldn’t read this one.

“Never.”

I fell asleep in the chair within seconds of Bili’s exit. It came on so quick that it felt like I was under anesthesia.

The dreams that followed were not normal dreams. Realistic was an understatement. It wasn’t until much later that I understood what they meant. It was not a random meaningless dream as most are. I would later come to believe that it was more of a premonition than anything. Trouble was coming.
