The Otherside: Jay McClayn: This Is High School (Book 1)

Chapter 18

When I got into my room, I felt like I needed a change and it felt weird. I took my dagger off and placed it on the bed. Then I took off my necklace and placed it beside the dagger. I glanced at the clock 6PM. I have plenty of time. I began digging through my closet and came across some skirts I had never worn. I grabbed a short black pleated skirt. I then started digging for the perfect shirt. I pulled out a white button up shirt. I then got on my knees and pulled out knee high black boots and started changing. When I was done I strapped the dagger back on and put my necklace back around my neck. The dagger was sticking out a few inches below my skirt. I then began to put makeup on. I put silver shadow on my eyelids, and black eyeliner and mascara on. I then put my long blonde hair up in a half up, half down simple hair style. Through all that I felt I was missing something.

I then heard a knock on the door. I then glanced at the clock, 8PM. It took me two hours to do this, wow. I then walked to the door and Harrison walked in with a piece of cake, and a dark brown wooden box; it was as long as a ruler. He set down the cake on the table next to my bed and then turned around to look at me again.

“Wow.” I could tell Harrison was trying to think of other words to say.

“Is it bad?” I asked not really knowing how he felt about it.

“No, it’s not. It looks great! Not school appropriate, with the dagger and uh shortness of your skirt.” He paused. “But it does look like it is missing something.” He pointed his finger at me and a black duster-like looking trench coat appeared on me. I buttoned up one of the buttons above my stomach and then looked into the mirror. “Now it looks perfect.” I then turned back around and hugged him. “Seriously though no wearing your dagger to school, or that skirt.” He sounded like my real father.

“Thanks.” I smiled. “So what brought you up here?” I said as I let go and looked up at him.

“I came to bring you cake and a gift.” He explained.

“Oh, you know you still didn’t have to...”

he cut me off. “I wanted to Jay. You are like my daughter.” He handed me the box and I opened it. It was a dark brown wooden wand. “That wand has been passed down in my family for generations, and since I don’t have any family but you anymore... well I want you to pass it on.”

My hand shook as I took it out of the box. “Y-you sure?” I said feeling mixed emotions about this.

“I’m sure.” He patted my head. “You don’t always have to use a wand for magic but for beginners like you, well right now, I think it will help.” He said warmly.

“Thanks, Harrison.” I said softly as I studied the wand.

“Well, I think I will go retire for tonight. You probably should do the same.” He kissed my forehead and then left.

It then hit me he wants to be a father figure to me like my dad was during the good times, or was he always like that? I then took off the dagger and put it and the wand in the drawer of the nightstand the cake was sitting on top of. I then changed into my pjs and hung the clothes up that I was wearing. I then picked up my dirty clothes I had been wearing today. I took the pocket knife out of my jean pocket and then threw them in the hamper. I took the knife and set it on the nightstand next to the cake. I picked up the slice of cake and ate it on my bed. I remembered Jason. I had some fun today without him, but I still missed him. When I finished the cake I put the empty plate back on the nightstand, and curled up into a ball. I couldn’t help feeling sad and began to cry, and continued until I slowly fell asleep.
